Grey's Anatomy Season 9: Will Anyone Else Die?!

at . Comments

With Grey's Anatomy fans still reeling from the eighth season finale of the ABC drama, creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes has a warning for those mourning the shocking death of a fan favorite:

They are still out there.

In an interview with E! Online, Rhimes said that "everyone is still so immersed in ‘Who died?'" that "no one is talking about the thing that I actually think is important and was the point of the [season finale]."

What would that be exactly? You may not be ready for this ...

Meant to Be

"They're still out there in the forest, and we don't know if they are going to be OK," she said. "We left it open for a reason because ... I hate to say this, but just because you saw people alive at the end of the finale doesn't mean they're going to be alive when the season starts up."

"We are completely jumping off into the unknown next season."

The unknown is something Rhimes is well familiar with.

The show-runner actually had a second cliffhanger planned and written that reflected her not knowing what would happen next season, regarding the cast's return (they have since signed new contracts).

Up until the day before the table read for the finale, this was up in the air. Then the original cast members re-signed, which "turned the tables" and pointed the eighth season-ender in the direction we witnessed.

The biggest consequence of that direction, obviously, was the death of Lexie Grey. A series regular and fan favorite since the tail end of Grey's Anatomy Season 3, her loss is hard for fans to stomach.

How did Chyler Leigh, who plays Lexie, take the news?

"Stuff that happens inside our family is stuff that happens inside our family," Rhimes said. "I have so much respect for Chyler, and the decision was very hard for everybody involved and I want to respect her privacy."

"The only thing I knew when I started writing the finale was that Chyler was leaving the finale. That was the only information I knew," she says, adding that the cast found out "at the table read."

"It was really, really emotional. Chyler Leigh and I were the only people who knew what was coming for her character. Kim Raver and I were the only ones who knew what was coming for that character."

"Chyler and I had been discussing it for months."

Excerpts from the rest of Rhimes' interview below ...

Mark and Meredith

On the possibility of ghost Lexie: "We saw Denny as a ghost, and people didn't really like that, did they? It was a really hard decision to let that character die versus send her off into the sunset somewhere."

"It was really difficult. It was not made lightly. I don't think we're going to see Lexie Grey ever again. That's not the intention, to see her again. It's a big loss for the characters and it's a big loss for the show."

On her "other plans" for Mark and Lexie: "Honestly, I always felt like Mark and Lexie were meant to be. If things had not turned out the way they had this season, I had a completely different thing planned for them."

"I was one of the people who loved Mark and Lexie together; I had a completely different thing planned for them. The introduction of Julia was part of planning a completely different storyline for them."

"When Mark and Lexie say 'meant to be,' it wasn't about servicing the fans. That's how I felt. That's what was supposed to happen, and that's what I wanted to see. It was heartbreaking."

On Teddy's possible return: "I don't think that's a possibility that has been ruled out. At least not by me. I love Kim. I say to my partner Betsy [Beers] every once in a while, 'We could do a series that's just Med Com.'"

On this being the hardest-ever episode to write: "It was for a variety of different reasons. I questioned it while we were shooting it and I questioned it once I saw the edit for it."

"And then once we got to the soundstage, literally Tuesday, I'm watching the show and I'm still changing the music at the last minute. Because it's so unsettling at the end."

"I think there's something very unsatisfying about the way that it ends ... I like the ride. Doing the shooting episode was really great because while it was gut-wrenching and hard to do, I knew who was OK."

"And in this, we don't know who's OK. We still don't totally know who's OK."

"There's still choices to be made. It is very unsettling. The idea of my Meredith and my Cristina in the wilderness without a match, chewing half a stick of gum each, having each other, while beautiful, was really painful."

"I feel like everyone has the right to have the reaction that they want to have. I think part of the reason why I am staying away from the reaction is I fully get that this is an unsatisfying finale."

"I have to focus on what happens next. Paying attention to fan reaction or going online to see what everyone has to say about it is paying attention to what happened before, and that does not actually help me at this point."

On where we pick up next fall: "I do know where we are going to pick up next season. But I'm not going to talk about it."

I think that Mark should die to be with Lexie, they could have the funeral together and play cute funeral music to show their love for each other, and they can even be buried next to each other too. I think Callie and Arizona will do just fine without Mark! I also think if all this goes on Derrick and Meredith should get married to show that their love shouldn't have to wait, especially if Mark dies too, it's inevitable. I am assuming that Derick and Meredith aren't going to move because they both signed contracts. I hope Christina and Owen get back together, they just need to work things out like any other couple. Owen made a good decision sending Teddy away because he knew she could be doing something great, but her husbands death was holding her back. It's gonna be hard watching all the sadness at Seattle Grace but it has happened before and they have got through it! Who knows maybe Meredith's dad had an affair with another woman and Meredith will have another brother or sister which might help fill the gap for her. I hope the Richard's wife passes away and starts to talk to Jackson's mother, it gives his character more of a personality instead of always being at work and not having any fun, and it kinda gives him a fiery sexiness about it! I think when Bailey gets married on her honeymoon she should become pregnant because a baby coming would bring new life to all the deaths. As for Avery and April I can find them either getting together or separating, but there have to still be some single people in the show to keep it going. Hopefully there are some new people adding to the cast that can be just as good as the others, so we can grow to love them too! because

I kind of hope Mark dies. Not because I want him to be with Lexie, but rather because I honestly find him annoying and useless. And I'm sorry but I don't think that Mark, Arizona & Callie are a strong family unit. It just felt like Mark was a single father and Callie & Arizona seem to always pass Sofia off to Mark whenever they wanted to do anything. And once upon a time Mark was considered family to Derek & Addison too and look how well that turned out.

I really don't understand....let Arizona die so Mark and Callie can bond and get together for Sofia. But then everyone says Lexie was Mark's soulmate and they were meant to be. So WHY when Lexie told Mark that she was in love with him...Did he keep weighing out Julia and Lexie? Julia could give him everything he wanted but he was in love with Lexie...but he wouldn't say it back until he knew she was dying. Mark, Callie and Arizona and Sofia are a strong family. I am sorry Lexie died but Mark had every chance to tell Lexie...but he waited until it was to late.
Just my thoughts and NOT to piss everyone off.

christina and owen all the way!!!

Put Mark out of his misery and let him die. And since Callie & Arizona are meant for each other (according to Shonda) they can raise their child together. Because they signed paperwork making Arizona a legal parent to Sofia as well. Apparently, if that's a good enough reason to kill Arizona off, then it's a good enough reason to kill off Mark too. Seriously though, if Mark or Arizona died Sofia would be losing a parent and nobody should want that. Arizona IS Sofia's mama.

I am very upset Lexie died. I really thought Lexie and Mark was getting back together. I know this is unlikely but I hope it was just a dream or maybe Lexie just passed out or went into a coma and the reason they couldn't feel her pulse is it was very weak due to so much blood lost. I will continue to watch but the show won't be the same with out her

I really liked lexie as a character, and it's sad to see her go, but i still like her parting scene. She was leaving anyway, in my opinion its better for her to go like this, with the heart wrenching confession of love from mark so that there could be some kind of conclusion to their plot line. It would have sucked if she had left for some other reason, with no real resolution between her and mark reached.

Im hoping that the freezing cold of being out there in the woods will have just somehow keep lexi from totally dying(maybe her blood presure is just extremely low). Then when help arrives they relize shes not totally dead. They put her in a coma for like 9 months so her body can heal. She finally wakes- and has to relearn how to talk, read- she may be parapleagic- or loss of limb.-but something she can come back from. Eventually she decides she'll be a surgon again- but theres a long road ahead. anyways somethin like that!I'd like to see-ANYTHING that brings her back so her and mark can be together like ther were MEANT TO BE....and mark would be by her side the whole time

I think lexie should just be knocked out we have all waited for Sloan and lexie and for Derick don't make his hand be messed up we went through that with Yang and the boyfriend she nearly married. Yang should find another man I think Owen should follow his military friend. Arizona should die if lexie did so Sloan and Callie can be together for the baby.

I just started watching. I see why she call's him dreamy. U can't help to fall deep into him ..
