Smash Review: And Marilyn is....

by at . Comments

Break a leg!

If any performance of any show needed that fortune, it was this preview of "Bombshell." They had a unprepared lead with ill-fitted costumes, a new ending, and, with the exception of Derek a lack of faith that they would succeed.

But succeed they did!

Ivy & Karen Vie For The Role

Smash had a few questionable storylines through its season, but in the finale it got it almost all right. The battle for the role of Marilyn once again was a decision between Karen Cartwright and Ivy Lynn. Based on the poll we did, most of you should be happy that Karen came out on top.

In the end, that girl persevered and deserved it. Especially since no one but Derek believed in her. Add in Ivy's continual sabotage, it's a miracle Karen didn't do worse than run off to the dressing room to let out a few tears. And she was brilliant. She was Marilyn!

Tom and Julia were able to pull out a beautiful song to close out the musical; the perfect reflection on the life of Marilyn. It also worked nicely as a closing to the Smash finale showing the pride on the faces of those involved in Bombshell, as well as, Ivy's despair.

Smash has been renewed for next season and is set to premiere at mid-season. This finale provided some insight into what may happen when the show returns. Some good ... others not so much.

Ivy's attempted suicide will have to be addressed. Did she succeed in killing herself? Her despair was difficult to watch, though much of it she brought on herself. Her action was definitely a cry for help and given her history maybe even meant to be a punishment to others, especially Derek. If she really wanted to die, she wouldn't have taken the pills in the dressing room where she should be found within minutes. If she survives, is there any chance the production would take her back? I find that doubtful.

Ellis is gone! Or, is he? His inflated sense of himself finally got the best of him. Eileen had no choice but to fire him when he outed himself as Rebecca's poisoner (which most of you predicted in last week's poll). He was so deluded to think that Eileen would be proud of him. I don't expect that Ellis is going to go away quietly, though. Despite how much his character is despised, he will most likely be back and with a vengeance. Will he turn this into a legal battle since he first mentioned the words "Marilyn" and "musical?"

The storyline I hated the most was Julia's affair with Michael. It ended up being not nearly as bad as it started, but the Julia we were introduced to in the pilot was not that Julia. As soon as she got sick, I wrote in my notes, "Oh, man ... she better not be pregnant!" And then what does she say to Tom ... the last time she was sick was when she was pregnant with Leo. To the writers of Smash: Please do not go down this path. Her throwing up was just due to stress or a bad burrito. Forget it ever happened. Please!

Ivy is such a bitch. Her decision to tell Karen on that day that Dev slept with her was selfish and unforgivable. Karen and Dev have had some ups and downs, but after their engagement, I started to understand their connection. In some ways, I hope they get back together. If they don't reunite, it would open up many new opportunities for Karen when she returns to New York. And, no, Derek should not be an option!

Even with the ups and downs throughout the season of Smash, it was an enjoyable ride. The music and performances were a highlight of the season. Are you looking forward to sticking around to see what happens when Bombshell hits Broadway?

Next season, Smash has a new showrunner, Josh Safran (Gossip Girl). Given how the show ended the season, what storylines do you want to see carried over and which would your prefer to never see again?

I am so upset that Karen got the part. Marilyn was so sexy and hot, so not Karen. Karen is cute and pretty but Blahhh no heat, no spice. Ivy on the other hand is so sexy and curvy and hot. She is Marilyn not Karen. Pretty disappointing last show for me. Kind of made me not want to watch it anymore and really Karen learned the whole show in one night. Really!!!!!!!! ok then.

I HATED this finale! It was so unrealistic that Karen would have learnt the whole show in one day and also that Derek would have all of the power when the creative team and the producer wanted Ivy!! Ivy knew everything and was perfect as Marylin, now she'll probably die because of that asshle only because he "saw her in his head"..God, I'll never ever watch this show again!

I do not feel sorry for Ivy. The end where she has the pills in her and and the champagne next to her, sets it up for her trying to kill herself, however I thinks he is doing it for attention so that people will think she truly is like Marilyn and deserves the role.
I like Tom 90% of the time but when he starts saying how great Ivy is, I want to puke!
When Ivy and the gang were sitting around and one of the guys said Ivy would never leave and Ivy said she wouldn't I had to call bullcrap! She was drunk during that Heaven on Earth performance and walked out and was fired because of it!
I knew Julia would be pregnant, however I am 99% sure it is Michael's!
It will be a long wait until January.

I am so happy that Karen was chosen to be Marilyn and I am happy that Derek stood by her and did not let Eileen force him to choose Ivy which would have been a mistake!
I knew Ivy was lying last week when she told she did not have the ring and then again she lied when he asked her at rehearsal then in true Ivy mean girl fashion she told Karen what happened it hopes to make Karen so devastated that she would quite and then Ivy would have the role by default. I have to say I do not blame Karen for running off stage and I liked that Derek gave her a pep talk and said that now she understands Marilyn even more!
I never thought I would say this but I like the idea of Derek and Karen, when he went to zip her up and tell her she was wonderful and that he knows about love, I wanted him to kiss her. I think Karen will be the one to tame Derek and if they get together I think she will be the one woman he can be faithful too!

I started watching this show as part of a self-imposed 12-step program to wean myself off Glee, which has been going steadily down the tubes. I was hooked instantly and can't stop watching. As a native New Yorker, I find all of the
Broadway antics fascinating but so true to the outsize feeling of the city itself. A few observations: If Julia is pregnant, which I hope is not the case, is it Michael's baby or her hubby's? I wanted Ivy to get the part of Marilyn because I think Megan Hilty is a better singer and actress. But in the end,it doesn't matter who got the part because there will be continuing drama next season as a result of this decision. I agree with several people on the list that Julia's hubby and son are lackluster characters; there was much more electricity when she and Michael were on screen. As for Derek, he is a fabulous, complex character but I don't want him to seduce Karen which, I feel, would weaken their relationship and take away any respect he might have for her.
Two of my favorite characters are Tom and his boyfriend. THey should live together and get married in season 3 since marriage equality was passed in NY.
One word of advice to the creators of the show: Do not wait 6-7 months for the next season. Just ask Ryan Murphy how a long hiatus affected his ratings!! One last note: they omitted several songs from the CD, including my favorite Wolf/Howl number. BTW, there were several songs on the CD which were recently covered on Glee. If the Smashers don't want to be considered "adult Glee" than they should pick different songs. Can't wait for next season...........

Karen was awful as marilyn, shes used a regular voice to sing everything and this same voice to just talking during acting as her--That is not broadway acting, it was so awful, the only thing Marilyn about her was the clothes. gawd just awful, awful, awful!!!!!

Kathreen McPhee SUCKED as Marilyn, her face just doesnt match up and her acting skills suck beyond the pseudo innocent act. I dont get what the writers were doing--stop trying to sell Karen, shes lame, boring, and not even half of a broadway actor/singer.
I will not be wat hing season 2 if I dont see Ivy coming up on top!!!!

@bitchstolemyremote, I completely agree. I don't think the writers realized how well-received Megan Hilty would be. I like Kat McPhee, but I'm not sure this was a good role for her. She's a good singer but her acting is almost lifeless and you need a big personality to pull off Broadway. Casting her next to Megan Hilty, only highlighted these shortcomings, which is probably why the writers had to go overboard with making Ivy look ridiculous. If a Gossip Girl producer takes over this show, I can easily see Ivy getting the Blair Waldorff treatment and Karen getting the Serena treatment.

Love Ivy, Eileen, Tom, chorus Don't like Derek, but he's realistic and well-acted and helps drive the plot. Best antagonist in the show. Same with Aileen's husband. Please get rid of: Dev, Frank, Leo. Please replace Ellis with a more believable, better-written antagonist that could be more of a real threat to Eileen/the show. If we have to suffer through with Karen, as I suppose we must to please the NBC ideal demographic, please, get her acting lessons and write her as less of a drip. Blech. New character needed: Someone to really work on Ivy's behalf.
