Interesting suggestion that Jane is RJ. But, what to make of his wife and daughter. If he is RJ, does that mean he killed them? That would make for the most diabolical plot twist in the history of television. And, probably sour a ton of fans of the show. I agree that the RJ storyline has become too over the top. At this point, IF RJ has the kinds of connections that the writers have hinted he does, how could Jane possibly win? He's got nowhere to turn with any certainty of trust but within his own team. And, for how long can he even trust that? It seems RJ can get to anyone.

@rationalgal: interesting ideas for seasons 5 & 6 :). @huisclothes: I agree! Tbh, I’m conflicted and a little worried about the direction the writers want to take the show. I don’t want them to make Jane too dark and unlikeable; I don’t want him to lose his child-like enthusiasm and sense of fun. I remember the episode where Jane gave Todd Johnson advice, “If you truly want revenge you have to be hard. You have to be dishonest and devious and cold. You can't let people see what's really in your heart”. Jane certainly embodied all that in these last 2 episodes. I’m just hoping the writers keep the spirit of Jane’s character alive – charitable, compassionate, fun-loving and yes of course - deeply tormented. I thought season 3’s finale was awesome. When Jane killed who he thought was RJ, he was vulnerable and loveable. It bothers me now to see him comfortable with a gun.

way he has. There is no remotely plausible explanation for how Red John is able to control so many people so thoroughly and make them do his bidding. The producers have not figured out who Red John is yet because at this point they've given him so much power that he has to be either and alien, a vampire or a warlock. Its absolutely gotten to the point of absurdity. Please just do the inevitably disappointing reveal of Red John and wrap up the whole annoying and infuriating Red John nonsense and get on with the show after Red John.

I agree this Red John thing has gone on too long. Its just ridiculous at this point that they've had so much indirect contact with this guy but they can't figure out who he is. He's a serial killer anyway and the FBI would have a team dedicated to catching him.
Also ridiculous is that he is able to seemingly make anyone do whatever he wants them to do. His reach is unlimited. He has disciples everywhere and he has no trouble recruiting new ones all the time. Who could do that? Honestly just try to imagine any remotely realistic explanation for this ability. There is absolutely no way they will be able to come up with a satisfying reveal for this. And I know this already. So get the inevitably disappointing reveal of Red John over with and get on with the show. Its just getting so frustrating to watch at this point. Even though I'm getting tired of the hunt for Red John, almost all episodes by themselves are beautifully compelling in terms of drama and character development. The problem is the need for a TV series to make money, so they drag a plot out longer than necessary. Simon Baker should do movies, which don't have the ongoing need for ratings and ad revenue. I'd love to see Simon do something Shakespearean (watch The Affair of the Necklace if you don't agree) or something like The Descendents (he would do much better than George Clooney) or something like Biutiful (could do dark drama just as well as Xavier Bardam). He carries extremely diverse roles perfectly, actually embodying the characters. Such a great actor! Give him an Oscar-worthy script and he's a sure winner!!!

the most interesting scene for me was the last one. the episode brought lisbon way out on an emotional limb. i think she finally admitted to herself that she loves patrick. then he rocked her world when he held her and told her he loved her. when she asked him about it, he did his usual dissembling. then he reached out and held her hand after the limo scene. at the end of all that, to have this grinning sociopath tell her she'd had sex with him? that had to cut her to the quick. in a way, red john did make patrick kill teresa.

what's great about this series is watching the brilliant, beautiful, damaged jane try to right an irrevocable wrong done to him by an equal if not superior mind. wanting the red john part to go away would gut the whole series. what horrible wrong do you replace it with? who else would jane feel that kind of anger at? some guy who rear ends his citroen?
i think the point someone here made that jane kissing the top of loralei's head was a hypnotic cue was a brilliant one. thanks for that. smart. i hope you're right.

As much as I adore The Mentalist, I hope Season 5 (or 6, if they must) will be the last one. Some of you mentioned Monk which I absolutely loved till Season 6 finale, and was utterly disgusted with a complete regress it suffered throughout Seasons 7 and 8, esp in Monk character development. Series final episodes were hasty and random, as if the writers had gotten bored or lost. As a consequence, The Case had been solved like any other Monk case, nothing special indeed. And Monk himself had shaken off all these years of carrying heavy burden way too easily. I hope the writers will not make the same mistake trying to squeeze out as much honk out of their golden goose, and almost killing it in the process.

Red John is not going to be solved, its what the show is about and how Jane became a consultant to CBI. I understand people getting tired of it, but they need to leave it alone a little more during the season, so people don't get so irritated. I thought Wainwright was one of RJ's people also, and I'm still not sure he was not. They are all willing to die for this psycho, so maybe he was. Darcy shooting the driver and the tires is understandable, but shooting the passengers in the limo when she thought Jane was there, makes me wonder about her connection with RJ also. I think they are showing Jane having feelings for Lisbon. When getting bailed the first person he thought of was Lisbon and was disappointed when it was not. Then tells her, "Good Luck Teresa, Love you". I guess this is where they are going.
I don't know how many more season's this show has, but I'm still interested. I will be watching next season.

I agree with Semra. Now they are stuck with the RJ plot for the rest of the show and we know they will only reveal RJ name in the last episode... So every plot, every attempt to catch RJ will fail (in each season finale). Perhaps, they will catch the mole or some other cult followers. But without any progress about RJ identity. How can they keep some credibility? How can they keep us interested ?

Season 4 was the the worst of all 4 seasons .. and the season finale! ... it was like a bunch of teenagers had taken over the writing and directing! I think season 3 finale was the best episode and I believe that the RJ there was actually meant to be the real RJ. But for some reason they changed the story and decided to keep him alive probably thinking that RJ was the motivator for Jane and it would be difficult to keep the interest of viewers ... But they were wrong! they just messed up with the show and disappointed committed viewers.

I thought Jane kissed Lorelei on the head as a ‘goodbye’, knowing that her days are numbered and RJ will kill her. I felt so bad for Lisbon. She’s obviously in love with him, and I think he loves her too (as a friend/sister), but he’s being cruel to be kind in order to protect her. I will always enjoy the Red John arch, and the long con was appropriate. We have to remind ourselves that RJ killed Jane’s wife and daughter and revenge is what drives him, so we may get upset that Jane’s becoming darker and going to such lengths to get RJ, but that’s been his raison-d’être from the day his family was killed. I like the balance between light and dark episodes. It’s an awesome show. I’ll keep watching till the end.

I think Darcy's the mole. Absolutely. Red John's a master of the enigma and this episode had plenty of them. Putting Wainright in the back seat of the limo served only one purpose: to get him killed. Darcy (if she was the mole), knew this and purposely put a couple of slugs through that very window where he was sitting. Her whole participation throughout the series has been to keep tabs on exactly how much Jane had figured out about Red John. That's why she teamed up initially with Wainright. And Red John made sure Jane didn't suspect her, by providing that stalker video of her. It caused Jane to think she was next on Red John's list, such that he ended up finding a way to protect her.

I have to agree that this hunt for Red John is going on far too long, especially since it never goes anywhere. There should be a real plan that progresses through a few episodes to its conclusion. It should wind up in Season 5 with Season 6 left for straightening out Jane's life. Idea: Lisbon's brother gets killed. Her niece Annie comes to live with her. She and Jane get along great (as shown in that episode where he taught her to pickpocket). Jane feels toward Annie as for his dead daughter, gets to feeling like he and Annie and Lisbon are the family he misses. Annie is super bright, sees the RJ situation, infiltrates Visualize, finds out who is what, gets in danger, gets rescued by Jane and Lisbon, who kill whoever the bad guys are. They start seeing themselves as a family. Jane gets his life back and that ends the series.

I got cut off! (try this again!)
I think if Darcy were the mole she wouldn't be so convinced that Jane was working with Red John (if not RJ himself). She's suspicious of Jane so she's suspicious of his team as well (esp. since they seem to "blindly" put up with his shenanigans). Why did Darcy think to go to the morgue to check out the faceless corpse? She'd been talking to Wainwright who confessed Lisbon had told him things weren't what they seemed (with Jane). That's what got her thinking. Of course, Darcy picking up on that accidental confession from poor Wainwright could be seen as evidence she is in fact the mole. It could be easily argued she rushed to the morgue not because she suspected an elaborate scheme by bad/crazy Jane to pull one over on law enforcement but because she wanted to warn RJ if Jane had faked shooting Lisbon. In either case, Wainwright's innocent slip of the tongue was the tip off to Darcy that all wasn't how it appeared to be.
