Chyler Leigh Issues Statement on Grey's Anatomy Exit

According to TV Fanatics, it was the most heartbreaking season finale death of them all. By far.

And now Chyler Leigh has spoken out for the first time about her emotional exit, which took place on the Grey's Anatomy Season 8 finale and still has fans reeling.

Meant to Be

"Earlier this year, I made the decision that season eight would be my last on Grey's Anatomy," the actress said in a statement released to multiple media outlets.

"I met with Shonda and we worked together to give Lexie's story appropriate closure. I am very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for five seasons. My experience on Grey's Anatomy is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I want to take this time to say thank you to the fans. Your unconditional love and support have made these last five years very special for me. I look forward to my next chapter and I hope you will continue to follow me on my journey."

Leigh's words echo those of Rhimes, who Tweeted not long after the finale aired:

"I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my Grey's family. This was not an easy decision.

"But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future."

tabecka. I totaly agree with you.You said everything i was thinking about.....
I'm so disapointed of Grey's......and truly i do not believe Chyler's statement...only because i've seen the video were she was like "I won't go anywere and if Mer is leaving i'm the next Grey."So if she wanted realy out i think it wasn't about her personal life, maybe she could't agree with something else in the show....Anyway......I won't stand to see Mark alive and happy with someone else....As many said here it's not real life but a show....So give the apropiate closure for this beloved tvcouple!!!(And sorry for my english if it's not good)

Dr meredith shepherd

Sorry, but I'm with all the angry fans... After MerDer became 'one', Slexie became my favourite couple. Grey's was boring this season but I carried on watching because I thought that FINALLY Mark and Lexie would end up together. If she didn't want to come back to the show, then so be it. Write both characters out of the show. Grey's just isn't the same. I will tune in for season 9 just to see the first 2 episodes, but I'm not too fazed for next season. Kill off Mark as well, and you may have your fan base back, but don't just kill off Lexie and Leave Mark in the show. There really is no need for him now. Words of Advice, Start season 9 with Mark dying as well, and at the end of episode 1, do a montage of great scenes involving Mark and Lexie, and leave it at that. This would be closure for the fans, not MArk staying on in the show on his own! Blah Grey's BLAH!!!!!!!

I have ZERO interest in watching Grey's without Lexie. To me, killing her was almost the equivalent of continuing the show after killing Derek or Meredith...So, after 8 years of watching, I'm bowing out. Goodbye, and thanks for nothing, Grey's.

Maybe there is a whole point behind a quick death with her not being able to say goodbye to anyone, to provide closure. Everybody is thinking that shonda just pushed her off and forgot about her, but maybe that is the whole point, so when season 9 rolls around there is a bigger setup around her death. For example there was no closure for meredith. I for one am thankful that lexie got to die in the hands of mark. Atleast fans got that! I am sooo sad to see lexie go, and even more sad that the lexie and mark love story has came to an end but i think there is something good to come out of it in season 9, atleast i sure in the hell hope so. I will miss chyler leigh as lexie.

A quick death is more shocking and harder to accrpt therefore I feel that Lexie's death will have interesting consequences for season 9 rather than just forgetting about Lexie. I am still not over the fact I'll never watch Lexie on grey's again.

I am sad that lexi is gone!! Geez, I loved her character, oh well, just a tv show. Could we not have gotten rid of April though as well? I don't know anyone who likes her including myself and the idea that she an Avery are together? GGGGG! She can go, Avery stay of course. Can't wait for next season!!

Sounds to me like there is a lot more to the story. Chyler had several years left on her $$$ contract. I think there was some in fighting going on. Regardless I am done...

I'm not that angry that they killed Lexie because I understand that Chyler Leigh wanted to leave. But I hate the way they did it. Shonda Rhimes had to orchestrate a plane crash to kill her off and only gave Mark and Lexie maybe a 30 second goodbye. Something MEDICAL could have happened to her and the episode could have been watching her say goodbye to everyone. That seems like it would have more closure. But a plane crash?! Really? Ugh.

i am so devastated that lexie will not be returning to grey's next year. it is going to be weird without little grey. she will be very missed. i feel that she got the "appropriate closure". she died next to the man she was in love with, imagining their life together. that was really the only way for her to go because it wouldnt be the same if lexie just moved. she was completely in love with mark and would never leave him. i am very sad with how it ended but the storyline is very good. she will be very missed. i love lexie and i loved her and mark even more. chlyer is a great actress. i support her reasons of wanting to leave. but we will miss "little grey" very much!!

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Amelia: I think I'm falling in love with Owen Hunt, and I'm really afraid that it's gonna destroy me.
Derek: It wouldn't be love if it didn't.

When we say things like "people don't change" it drives scientist crazy because change is literally the only constant in all of science. Energy. Matter. It's always changing, morphing, merging, growing, dying. It's the way people try not to change that's unnatural. The way we cling to what things were instead of letting things be what they are. The way we cling to old memories instead of forming new ones. The way we insist on believing despite every scientific indication that anything in this lifetime is permanent. Change is constant. How we experience change that's up to us. It can feel like death or it can feel like a second chance at life. If we open our fingers, loosen our grips, go with it, it can feel like pure adrenaline. Like at any moment we can have another chance at life. Like at any moment, we can be born all over again.
