Leverage Review: Season 5 Premiere

at . Comments

Welcome back Nate and company, we have missed you.

On the climatic Leverage Season 4 finale, both Victor and Latimer both got what they deserved, costing the Leverage team its base of operations in Boston and all of its previous created IDs.

So it was time to start over on "The (Very) Big Bird Job."

And what a start it was! Let’s break down the changes that the opener offered us:

Welcome to Portland: As mention in our interview with Timothy Hutton, the team has moved to Portland, giving it a chance to use some cool new locations.

Dean Devlin and his team did a phenomenal job using the story to justify moving the team to the actual city the series has been shooting in for the last few seasons. They took full advantage of this right off the bat with the Evergreen Space and Aviation museum as the setting for this week’s con.

We Are Family: The team feels closer to one another. Hardison and Parker are officially dating, while Nate showed clear signs of his commitment to Sophie.

Was anyone else surprised that Parker seem to have the least amount of trouble adjusting? I’m guessing that her relationship with Archie was such that they moved around a lot, which would make her the most likely person to not be attached to a place. That said, I was surprised how attached to Boston Sophie was. A big part of grifting is being on the move. Seems like she would also be prone to moving about.

A List Guest Stars: If our first guest star of the season, Cary Elwes, is any indication, we are going to see some great appearances this summer.

Elwes did a terrific job of channeling Howard Hughes. While Hardison’s ability to simulate him flying the Spruce Goose pushed the boundaries of believability, it was still a lot of fun watching him confess to killing a man after his lawyer told him not to say anything.

Overall, I really enjoyed the first offering of this season and can’t wait to see how things unfold with the secret that Nate and Hardison are keeping. I have no clues as to what they might be hiding. What do you think it could be?

Seems no one noticed, or cared, about what Eliot did and with who (whom?). He said he saw some old "friends". Well the "friend who helped blow up what looked like a missile silo was Adam Baldwin. Adam and Christian were both on Angel.

@Jim by now you know it's Portland and not Seattle. Mistakes happen.:) I LOVE Leverage. I was super excited to have a new episode and have my favorite team back. It was such an explosive and great season finale that I didn't know how the premiere would be. I hate to say that the con of the week bored me to tears. I wasn't engaged in that aspect of the episode at all. But the character and team stuff was so good as usual. A brewery and Eliot moonlighting as a chef /bartender. Parker and Hardison officially dating. Nate honoring his father and committed to Sophie. Parker running like a champ and pulling a spiderwoman. The location...awesome. I suspect they fear cancellation based on some of their tweets so hope the ratings stay strong

So very good to have the Leverage team back!

I absolutely loved the season premiere. The writers of Leverage always keep us wanting more and the cast is wonderful. So happy to have Leverage back. I hope it runs for many more years

Yes they are in Portland not Seattle and they have filmed there since Season 2 so 4 seasons not 2.
Also, it is his security officer NOT his lawyer that tells him NOT to say anything...
And we KNOW the guest list will be FANTASTIC! They had THREE big ones in this premiere episode alone! They also have been leaking the guests as they filmed so there are a TON of great things to look forward to!

I enjoyed your review of my favorite show & thought the premiere was excellent myself. I only wish someone would have proofread and gotten the location correct. Diehard Leverage fans have known for years that Portland is where Leverage films.

Welcome to Seattle...I think NOT! #Leverage has been filmed in Portland Oregon for season 2,3,4&5. AND the new #LeverageTeam HQ's/setting IS Portland Oregon. The team moved from Boston to Portland, not Seattle.

Seriously, Seattle? And the exteriors are of the REAL Bridgeport Brew Pub in Portland. The set interior and the actual pub have some similarities. It's nice they won't have to block out Mt.Hood or any of PDX's iconic buildings. Meanwhile, the story was fun and the new tagline is of course, "hand over the Teddy Bear."

Jim G. It wasn't Seattle they moved the new HQ to, it was Portland(comment 4 on this). Hang your head in shame.

I have so missed hearing Elliot say "Damn it Hardison!" Sophie complaining about the rain was funny and I loved how they threw it back at her that it rains in London. I always love to that when the show is away for awhile they tease us about what the gang did in their spare time. Hardison screaming as he and Parker jumped off buildings was hilarious. The end will had a super neat twist. What is this secret? Are Victor and Jack alive? The team really having to start over is priceless.

Leverage Season 5 Episode 1 Quotes

Eliot: Well, you just can't setup shop in the back of someone's restaurant.
Hardison: Of course not. That's why I bought the Microbrewery. What? No he didn't?
Parker: Yes, he did.
Hardison: We brew our own beer now.
Parker: Yeah, and we are calling it, Thief Juice. Tastes like bad guys.

Sophie: Excuse me, what is this place?
Hardison: Oh This? This is Leverage Inc. Portland branch, come on baby.
