Lost Girl Review: Dark Fae Delight

by at . Comments

Good news: Bo and Ryan are still hooking up. Bad news: they are still hooking up. At least for Kenzi and her boyfriend, Nate.

In "Table for Fae," Lauren and Nadia were still out and about, but Kenzi finally returned... although, due to her and Bo's romantic entanglements, their relationship went from laughs and banter to somewhat estranged.

Will Bo Be Changed?

The double date was awkward right from the beginning. The hostess eying Bo was creepy, though that did have a happy ending. And, then Ryan taking control and ordering funky food for them to eat. Did you catch the Fae slip about the 1940s bottle of wine? Nate seemed confused, but never made an issue of it at least.

Ryan did try to make it right with his seemingly heartfelt apology, but then he got The Morrigan involved. Bad move, man. The Morrigan offered Nate his dream of a music contract, but Kenzi couldn't let him go through with it.

Kenzi's deal with The Morrigan is a scary one. She must really love Nate to agree to give The Morrigan a favor. That's more dangerous than the Nate's recording deal ever would have been. Didn't Kenzi learn anything from Dyson's deal with the Norn? Deals like that in the Fae world never end well.

That simple double date led to doom for both of the girl's relationships. Will Nate be able to over come the rejection and stay with Kenzi? I doubt it. It will be too much for him to handle. Kenzi would have lost him anyway if he signed with The Morrigan, but at least she won't feel any guilt about his future.

And, Kenzi's rejection of Ryan for being Dark Fae was not as detrimental to Bo's relationship with Ryan, but in the long run Bo will make the decision to let him go. He may be fun for now and bring her a beautiful hostess as a gift, but ultimately Bo will choose Kenzi over Ryan. He was cute while it lasted.

The introduction of Ryan has been important for Bo's understanding of the Fae world. He was honest with her about the Dark and Light Fae. While she may be unaligned officially, she definitely has a loyalty to the Light Fae over the Dark. She sees the Dark as the more inhumane side, will Ryan's comment about The Ash imprisoning Lauren change her feelings about the sides? Even though Bo didn't indicate that she was surprised by that reveal, she is sure to follow up on it.

She will work to bring down the Garuda with The Ash and Trick, but after that, will she remain unaligned? Or, will she pick a side?

Odds and Ends

  • The Fae problem of the week didn't provide any insight into the bigger problem happening in the Fae world. It did though bring up the differences in moral code between Bo and Ryan.
  • Bo's determination that the human victims be rejuvenated first showed her compassionate side. Not one that Ryan shares.
  • Dyson. Poor Dyson. He is still suffering from his deal with the Norn. I don't like this angst-filled Dyson. He isn't any fun at all.
  • Hale has become Dyson's punching bag. I miss the Hale-Kenzi interactions.
  • I know there are a lot of Lauren-Bo fans out there that have seen all of season 2. I can't wait to see what has you on Team Doccubus, but I haven't missed her at all while she's been off with Nadia. (No spoilers in the comments, please.)

This is what I meant in that last bullet point with an explanation: 1. I am looking forward to seeing what happens when Lauren returns. I want her to come back and want to see what happens with her and Bo (that's why I mentioned Team Doccubus). 2. Despite awaiting her return, I didn't miss her presence in the episodes. They were solid without her due to the addition of Ryan for this arc. Bo wouldn't have learned what she needed from him if Lauren was around. I hope that helps clarify what I meant by that bullet point. The thought I was trying to convey was not accurately written. If you want to believe I have something against Lauren and am all about Dyson, I doubt that I'll be able to change your mind. But, it just isn't the case at this point in the season.

Most of the negativity has come from my last bullet point. I stepped away for a day and reread it today as a Lauren fan and I now understand how you interpreted it. The point I was trying to make was not clear at all and was interpreted almost the opposite of how I meant it(sometimes happens when writing a review quickly after an episode and late at night. Unfortunately.) So, I will try again and elaborate on my reasoning. See next above

I feel that I need to further clarify my position on Lauren. Please see my initial comments below. Also, everyone is free to share their opinion, but I don't want to see name calling or personal attacks on the reviews. I will delete those if they start to happen. So far, the discussion has been lively but free of any those types of comments, which is good. See next above.

DeAnn-- I call things like I see them. It has become blinding apparent that a few of the US reviewers view Lauren as a plot device and marginalize her by either ignoring her contributions to plot & characterization or use some form of derogatory language describing what she does. If it was just a few one offs here and there, I wouldn't care-> it's just fiction, all characters have flaws, & it's just an opinion. But it has become a distrubing pattern over the course of 26 episode reviews. And I don't think it's cool to poke at fans of the show that like Bo & Lauren together on an episode review that doesn't even include said character. It's odd. It's bully-like. And if a "tv" reviewer and not a "shipper" reviewer ever spoke of Dyson this way for 26-odd episodes, I would hope... that you would get up and say something.

Hell yes, I miss Lauren. She keeps Bo in check and is an integral part of the show. Zoie Palmer and Anna Silk have tremendous amount of chemistry and the show only loses when that dynamic is gone. By adding a completely new character serving as nothing but a plot device, you alienate your fanbase and your lead character by isolating her from everyone else. It took Lauren and Kenzi gone for ONE episode for Bo to act completely reckless. Ryan is never going to be a good match for her. I hope Dyson gets his love back soon because unfortunately he is only defined by his love, that's how one dimensional and utterly pathetic he is. At least the old Dyson was somewhat tolerable instead of just being there, sucking the fun out of an already boring episode with his broodiness.

I hope that all the different shippers keep being allowed to have their opinions aired in the comments, but I don't think that sniping at the reviewer is in any way productive. She has a right to her opinion just like everyone else.
If you don't agree with her, fine, you can state your opinion about the relationships in the show and how you feel about an episode without denigrating the reviewer or her review. You can agree to disagree without the vitriol.

I agree with the reviewer that I didn't miss Lauren either...she's a boring character and from what I have seen has very little chemistry with Bo. She is a wimpy character who is a slave to the Ash, all for the girlfriend whom she really loves, Nadia. She can't have as meaningful a relationship with Bo if she is in love with Nadia (and she actually has chemistry with Nadia, from what I've seen so far). I am not a fan of Ryan and Bo's relationship because Ryan is dark fae, is skeevy, and has so far tried to hurt Kenzi's boyfriend by getting him into a death spiral with the Morrigan. Though I was glad that Kenzi got him out of it, I, too, worry what the Morrigan will require of Kenzi as a favor. And I also want Dyson to get his love back from the Norn ASAP. We haven't seen the fun and sexy Dyson for awhile. I miss him! I miss his relationship with Bo, which seemed to make both of them happy. I hope that all the different shippers keep being allowed to have their opinions aired in the comments, but I don't think that sniping at the reviewer is in any way productive. She has a right to her opinion just like everyone else.

@faefand8 Well, actually, Bo not caring for Dyson is not ''sudden''. She still cared about him for the first few episodes of the season but seeing as that situation was hopeless, she moved on to someone better: Lauren (yeah, yeah, I'm a Doccubus fan! Sue me! lol). Anyway, the question is, did she suddenly stopped caring for Lauren? ^_^ Anyway, I guess this is one of the very few thing that Team Dyson and Team Lauren can agree on: Ryan sucks!!! ^_^ As for the whole comments on the review: Yes, the reviewer is entitled to her opinion, but so are we! That's what is called freedom of speech! Heck, no one here is asking her to stop her reviews, but by freedom of speech, we are very much allowed to be pissed at them for being openly ''anti-Lauren'' (by, for exemple, putting an anti-Lauren comment on a review for an episode in which she wasn't even there!)

Avatar

Fran-- I think its ok for me to be pissed when digs are made consistantly towards one character. You can totally hate on Lauren. I get that this is a review and its an opinion. But I'm sick to death of reviewer after reviewer do nothing but piss on her contributions to plot and story. If she's entitled to be biased, as you state, than I'm entitled to saying its BS. I think its divisive and wrong to put down any ship on the show. And its crazy to make a dig on a character who isn't even in this episode.

ryan = worst character ever. i agree with others that he adds absolutely nothing to the show and actually brings it down by isolating bo who is acting like she is 12 from everyone she cares about. how about she takes a look at dyson? does she suddenly not care for him anymore? also, there is nothing wrong with not being impartial as long as you admit to it. I assume that's the problem fans of the show have with this particular reviewer. it's crystal clear you are looking at the show through your dyson goggles and that's alright (I admit i sometimes do it too), but admitting to it would be the right thing to do instead of poking fans in the hopes of getting them to react and actually comment.
