Pretty Little Liars Review: The Big BetrAyal

at . Comments

OMG! Or should I say O...M... A?!?

If you haven't seen the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars, stop reading and watch it right now! I guess it goes without saying, but SPOILERS AHEAD!

"The Lady Killer" was the kind of finale we deserved at the end of last season. It had just the right amount of mystery, suspense and revelations. The episode might have left us scratching our head and contemplating some new questions for the winter season, but it gave us some unprecedented access into the world of A.

A Kiss for Spencer

First off, let's deal with the big reveals! While many of us anticipated some of these events, it was still amazing to watch them unfold onscreen.

Emily was isolated from the start of the episode. From all the press surrounding Garrett's trial and her disagreement with the other liars, it seemed like all these forces united to make her vulnerable. But why on earth would she go to a cabin with Nate?!? Given his odd reaction to their kiss (and the fact that they kissed to begin with), it seems unusual that Emily would turn to him for some alone time in the woods.

Honestly, this was as bad a decision as Spencer's in the last finale. Isolating yourself from your friends and being alone with someone you barely trust (like Nate or Mona) when someone is out to get you is not smart. Naturally, in the spooky remote cabin in the woods, Emily figured out who Nate really is: Linden James, former True North boyfriend of Maya, as well as a creepy stalker and murderer. Were you surprised?

How scary was Nate when he popped out of nowhere? Emily said he scared her half to death. To which he replied: "Not really, but I will." *Chills* His plan to kill Paige as punishment for Emily stealing Maya away didn't come to fruition, but his untimely death did release Garrett from prison finally.

Garrett's release was particularly important because it seems like that was part of A(s)'s plan. Paige was suppose to be set up for Maya's murder, but she never made it to that cemetery. No doubt the girls would have totally believed Paige was guilty since they had already decided that she was A. The plan the As came up with would have worked if not for Nate. So it's up to Mona and ...TOBY!... to figure out how to get Maya's phone back from Paige because they still have a lot of work to do and a lot of evidence to cover up.

That's right, Toby is the other A! Shocked? Angry? Confused? Or some combination of the three?

Some of us might have seen it coming for weeks, but I didn't really want to believe it was possible until I saw this episode. Spencer's reunion with Toby was quite the romantic scene. There was so much attention paid to their love scenes, highlighting the importance of their first time (some may say it wasn't their first time, but it's the first time it's been onscreen) and the love between them, that I couldn't help but feel that she (and we) were being set up for a big betrAyal.

The whole thing was oddly reminiscent of Scream - a girl sleeps with her boyfriend only to find out he's the psycho who's been terrorizing her. This revelation also kind of explains why there hasn't been as much A damage directed towards Spencer.

This big revelation will definitely send most of us running back to the earlier episodes to really pay attention to Toby. The scenes between Mona and Toby were really important because we finally got some insight into A's plans. We know how they intended to set up Paige and why. We just don't understand the motives yet. And we know where A's next target is going to be, the Halloween train.

Oh, and equally shocking but also expected was poor Caleb getting shot. I'm still not sure exactly how it happened (we didn't really get any information about it), but once he brought that gun into the episode, it was evident that trouble was afoot. Coupled with the earlier scenes of a hysterical Hanna made it easy to guess that Caleb would be the victim. I applaud him for trying to protect himself and Hanna, but the gun was not a smart move and leaving it unattended was even more ridiculous.

In the midst of all this exciting drama, Ezra and Aria managed to suck out the suspense in the episode by returning to the Maggie situation. It's not that I don't care about Ezra's love child, but it's really frustrating to watch Aria react to the situation.

When Maggie showed up at Ezra's (an event which our very own Leigh Raines predicted in our Pretty Little Liars Round Table), Aria wasn't worried about the fallout for Ezra but for herself. She doesn't want to get in trouble for having lied in the first place and seeking out Maggie. Maggie is in a very difficult position, but she's not lying for selfish reasons like Aria; she's trying to do what's best for her child. The whole thing made we want to yell, "Grow up, Aria!"

The finale was satisfying, but it did leave us with some big questions:

  • Why did A warn Emily in that cabin?
  • Why do the As care if Garrett is released? Is this for Jenna's benefit? Is Garrett guilty of some other crime?
  • Why would Toby work for the A team?
  • How was Mona able to escape so easily? Where did she get that access card?
  • What's in Maya's bag that's so important?
  • How did Caleb get shot? Did Nate briefly return to life for one last scare or do we dare suspect that Emily might have had something to do with it?

And it looks like we have some great thrills to look forward to with this year's Halloween special. Can't wait for October!

Okay I don't have any idea about Garrett. Frankly I was texting 3 of my friends ths whole time about every second. And then TOBY?!?! I literally almost cried. I freaked out! I know in my heart that he'd just doing it because he loves Spencer so much. Annd I think Caleb was shot by the third or fourth or whatever number we're up to in A's. Because at the end of the episode before, there were two A's shown. And Mona hadn't escaped yet so... Duh.

I'm clearing this up the only love interests A has messed with is spencers, melissas and hannas and thats because wren is A and he has a thing for them maya being killed had nothing to do with A. And honestly I think paige may have killed allison which is why they were trying to frame her for killing maya... Btw has who killed ian been brought back up... We need to look into that...

I think some things are more obvious than others : First : Reasons why Toby would be/become A : the Jenna thing/Ali was mean to him/his half sister video of them or because he wants to protect the girls or he might be in the secret club ...I don't know. I feel like there are lots of A's now and that their mission involves more than just the four girls... Second, of course Nate is black. Nothing racist here, he was supposed to be Maya's cousin...Remember that she was a beautiful african american girl? therefore they would cast someone who looked like her. third, I really do think A and Nate aren't working together. A's plan was to get Paige accused of murdering Maya/digging up Allison's grave. then we know what happened ...Paige was caught by Nate first and then Emily and Paige were stuck in the cabin. I think A's plan is more like framing the girls for something than to kill them...Except for Allison... Finally, poor Caleb, what the hell happened to him? Was Nate the one who shot him?

Nate isn't the only African American on the show. Maya is also African American. I don't think race plays a role though, he did a good job at playing a very creepy role and I think all the characters were perfectly chosen for their part. Nate was suspicious from the start only because when Emily first met him she said Maya had never mentioned anything about having a cousin Nate that was going to attend Hollis. As for Ezra, I think his role will be very important later on in the season. Granted, his story line isn't as fascinating as the plot itself but I'm sure his story line will tie into the plot eventually. The writers are very creative, so I think every thing is wrote in the script is important. I still am confused whether Nate was part of the A team or not?! I'm guessing no seeing he had his own vendetta against Emily and not the other girls. And because he didn't have the oh do fashionable black hoodie. :-)

omg!! wow this episode leaves so much suspense. So yah what happened to Lucas. there is probably and A for every girl. Ezra is a non factor, goodbye, and what about the whole thing with Noel and them? WHat about jenna and cece. Wow and was Nate living by himself why didn't anyone evr meet his family, why is he the only black person in the show?? Emily did not look sad or scared wen he brought Paige out the closet smh...........

Paige is not off the hook here. Firstly, we didn't see the whole text message she received from A. Her thumb was obscuring some of it. So we don't know if it really said "or Emily gets hurt". Merely a plot device to hide the big reveal, or deliberate because it didn't say that at all? What did she say to the police officers at the end? Seemed pretty suspicious to me.

So my theory is Toby is on the 'A team' for the safety of Spencer and the girls. Remember in the last episode he was in he told Spencer that if she wasn't going to tell him what's going on, he would find out himself. I think this is Toby's way of finding out himself and making sure Spencer stays safe along with the other girls. Because when Mona was talking to Toby at the end she was talking about how 'good laid plans always go awry' or something of that nature. I think Toby was the one who called Mona and kept her from carrying out her plans in order to keep her from hurting the girls(which is probably what her plan consisted of). The one thing I'm confused about is who shot Caleb and was Nate on the A team? At first I thought A had shot Caleb and ran or something. Then I thought maybe Paige found Emily and Caleb and mistakened Caleb for Nate and shot him by accident. And on to Nate/Lyndon. So we know he killed Maya, but was he involved with the A team as well?

What if the "betrAyal" is Toby betraying the A team instead of Toby betraying the liars? I know that's pretty farfetched but blame the writers for making fall in love with Spoby lol. Can someone explain to me why they don't know who shot Caleb? I thought it was Nate. Emily only stabbed him, he wouldn't die instantly so it would make sense that he grabbed the gun to kill Emily and shot Caleb by mistake or Caleb took the hit for Emily.

Last night's episode was awesome. I can't believe Toby is on the A Team, why did it have to be Toby? I couldn't wait to find out a member of the A Team, but now I'm not so happy. I shot up off my couch, and yelled "Nooo!" It's sad that Toby had to be one of the members. I wonder who shot Caleb though?

Why do the As care if Garrett is released? Is this for Jenna's benefit? Is Garrett guilty of some other crime? Garrett being on the A team would be too obvious right... but I couldn't imagine another reason right now... Why would Toby work for the A team? He got bullied by Ali just like Mona... How was Mona able to escape so easily? Where did she get that access card? I don't know why but I'm always suspicious about Wren... How did Caleb get shot? Did Nate briefly return to life for one last scare or do we dare suspect that Emily might have had something to do with it? I would have gone with the first one but the other would be a shocking turn!
