Covert Affairs Review: Moscow Mambo

by at . Comments

In the final episode before Covert Affairs takes a short hiatus, "Let's Dance" felt like it never took time to catch its breath.

With Annie now out of the hospital, she was going a million miles a minute during the entire hour, attempting to seek revenge for what Lena did to her and Simon.  Eventually she got that revenge.

Joan Plans a Trip

We've seen Annie shoot before. We've seen her kill. That didn't make this one any easier to watch.  She still has such an innocence surrounding her that when she was standing toe-to-toe with Lena, I was still expecting someone else to come in and save her from the traitorous agent.

Alas, our little Annie needed no such help.  When Lena finally made a move for her gun Ms. Walker took her down with no hesitation, firing a pair of shots straight into her chest.  Although there was no other move, like I said, it was surprising to see Annie do it.

Lena's was a great addition for Covert Affairs.  Not only did her presence help build the long-running story that has made season three so interesting, but Sarah Clarke was simply fantastic throughout the run.

In her final scene, when Lena is attempting to get Annie to become a double agent, Clarke showed us once again how perfectly she plays that evil-charm.  She's talking about being a traitor to her country, and how she murdered Jai Wilcox, but all the while I couldn't help but be intrigued.  If I were Annie, I would have had to stop and think about the prospect, that's how charismatic Lena was.

Before getting to those final moments between Annie and Lena, "Let's Dance" showcased the former running around Moscow with Dmitri, a piano playing agent from Lena's past.  I liked the twist that he fell right back into Lena's trap since she returned to Russia, but other than that the character didn't bring much to the table.

Once Dmitri and his friend lie to Annie about where Lena will be, Annie's ambush on some random FSB agent put the Russians on her tail, and forces her to leave town.  But they never counted on the old "switcheroo."  I mean we all saw this coming right?  Why else would they not have shown Annie's face as she tried to leave Moscow?  Even though it didn't fool us, it fooled the Russians and made that final scene possible, so I'm okay with it.

Both before Annie left, and near the end of her trip, Auggie made it clear that his feelings for her were stronger than ever.  Whether it was telling her that he's there for her no matter what, or telling her to come home so that he can tell her important things, Aunnie shippers had a lot to be excited about in this episode.

What's not exciting is that Covert Affairs will be off the air until October 16.  What will we do until then?!?!  What was your favorite part of this quasi-midseason finale?  Are you glad to have Lena out of the picture?  And what do you think is next for Annie Walker?

Much as I love and adore Peter Gallagher (terrific actor and REALLy funny off-set) I've gotta agree with everyone else here. As soon as I saw that preview with him and Joan having dinner, I could see the look of disgust Joan threw his way. I'm hoping perhaps he'll come around to the good side. Otherwise, Joan needs to ditch his ass and find someone better. Cuz she's just too loving and nurturing to be with that asshole. Okay, and hot. Let's face facts. P Gallagher does always seem to get the good looking ones...

This definitely was notmoscow, uniformed military and police are everywhere. Not in a menacing way though. And definitely poor Russian spoken. Love covert affairs but this was so fake it was unbearable.

Why did you give it such a low rating?

I loved Simon and Annie together, and he was amazing. Obviously he had been looking to get out by saying that he had built this cover in the Maldives. I love how he knew she was CIA, but fell in love with her anyway, and so did she. I loved how everytime he saw her he always said "God, I missed you". But she was much younger and could not give everything up quite yet....I think more than being spies this was what separated them; and I do not say that because I thought age matters, but I think here it did. As for Auggie, I am not sure Annie knew what it was like for him to see her dying and get revived. She was clearly angry and sad, but she wanted vengeance before she could heal. I mean her stitches were still breaking, and the way she acted when the Russian pianist saw, it was like she had been raped and metanorphically she had been...and Auggie knew she was heartbroken, and what a serious injury does to your head. But I guess they have those jobs for a reason, because I would have been scared that I would actually lose the person this time. But he supported her and plus, he knows she's badass. He almost got her to come back, she welled up a little, but she went and gave Lena, who I would call a sociopath good. As for Eyal, I thought he would have shown up this episode, because he as Mossad had a better chance of getting her out of the pit they are putting her . But I know he will be there for the next few episodes.

I was on the edge of my seat on Tuesday night. Lina was such a clever and cunning adversary up to the very end; I couldn’t imagine how Annie was going to triumph. The nerve and audacity of Lina to offer a partnership to the person she not only set up, but tried to kill not once – but twice. Atlas, Annie did prevail – she did not hesitate to shoot and kill Lina in the end. Bye- bye Lina – excellent acting – not sorry to see her demise.
I will miss the Simon and Annie romance. Richard Coyle is one of the sexiest men on television. I am not one of the fans in favor of a Auggie/Annie romance. I love Auggie, but I like Annie and him as the good friends that they are. A romantic relationship will bring another dimension to the relationship and not necessarily something interesting.
Covert Affairs outdid themselves the last 4 episodes. It was very nice the way the --who killed Jai Wilcox, Lina, Simon and Annie story intertwined. Good job writers!
I can’t wait for the return of Covert Affairs in October 16th.

I love this show! I think the character development and acting is amazing. I am crushed that Simon is gone and keep hoping the CIA saved him and locked him up to fool the FSB. I agree about Annie still seeming innocent and she also seems broken and reckless in this episode due to her loss and betrayal by Lena..glad to see Lena get it but I thought it could be interesting if shre faked agreeing to become a double to entrap Lena a different date. It is too easy on lena to just kill her. Ishe needed to suffer a little. I suspect that arthur is not on the up and up...he was way too fast to assume Annie was guilty. He has no redeeming qualities and I'd like to see Annie and Joan work together in the field with auggie. After Annie's bad luck with men, it would be good to see her find love and be recognized professionally.

I am so sorry Simon is dead. I loved him sorry there wouldn't be a fight between Simon and Auggie for Annie's heart i wonder who would have won.

Actors were trained in Russian pronunciation poorly. For viewers whose this language is primary wouldn't understand that rambling. Episode was filmed probably in Budapest or another eastern European capitol but not in Moscow. Uniformed police in Moscow does not walk on streets as shown and doesn't follow suspects. It looks ridiculous. The rest is quite intriguing.

IT was a fanastic episode from beginning to the end! The Tender moment between Joan and Annie I loved it that Joan was finally able to show her soft sider a woman a truly cares for Annie and do anything to be there for her like a mother and a daughter. It was definitely a mother and daugther moment between those two and the moments between Auggie and Annie it definitely showed in this episode he really loves her and will do anything for her be there for her when she needs him and wants to talk to her when she gets back how he feels about her. Also love that she finally got rid of Lena. Sarah Clarke did a splendid performance planning the traitor Lena. Great performance from all the stars on CA.
