Grey's Anatomy Season Premiere Review: Everything Changes

at . Comments

After months of waiting to see how our favorite dysfunctional doctors would handle the tragedy of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 8 finale, the drama returned with "Going Going Gone." It was filled with a whole lot of emotion and a handful of laughs. It was reminiscent of previous seasons. It was... great.

Shonda Rhimes, how do you do it? How do you manage to keep the fans so invested after so many seasons? And more importantly, how do you manage to throw a curve ball like you did at the end of this hour? Let’s get to it.

Shades of Meredith Grey

RIP McSteamy. The majority of the episode was centered around saying goodbye to Sloan. His wish was that after thirty days of no changes, he would be removed from the machines keeping him alive. What an emotional send out. Derek and Callie stayed by his side while the others waited outside of his room.

In no way was I ready to say goodbye to this character. He brought a spark to this show that it badly needed. Not to mention, he was freakin’ gorgeous! Eric Dane, I will absolutely miss you on my television every week. At least we have the infamous “McSteamy” picture to look back on.

Although it was sad to see him go, the writers made a smart choice in killing off the character versus having him just depart. There is no way that Sloan would have left Callie and Arizona with his daughter by choice. He was a good father and wouldn’t have left that baby.

You have to love the video footage shown throughout the hour of Sloan. He really did change the lives of Derek, Callie and Avery. Now admit it: how many of you cried? I knew I wasn’t alone!

Meet Medusa. There is a new crop of interns at Seattle Grace and Meredith is the attending to fear. Nicknamed “Medusa,” Grey is showing them the same way she learned from Bailey. She even did the intern appendectomy with one of the new recurring cast members, Camilla Luddington

Who else is thrilled about Gaius Charles becoming part of this already awesome cast? Charles is an amazing actor and anyone who has seen Friday Night Lights knows exactly what I am talking about.

Mere-Der Love

Trouble Taking Off. Cristina is off in Minnesota dealing with Mr. Feeny Dr. Thomas and his endless stories. Girlfriend is told she needs to become a team player because she is not fitting in. Good! Send her back ASAP! Yang makes plans to fly to Seattle, Grey makes plans to fly to Minnesota. Neither make it. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to get on a plane after what they went through. Alex doesn’t make his plane either, following a sudden decision to stay at SGH after meeting Dr. Barnett, Arizona’s replacement.

The gang is almost all back together... even April. I have to admit, I didn’t even realize she wasn’t in the episode until Owen showed up at her farm. Did anyone else miss her?

Shocker! After keeping Arizona’s arc out of the spoilers all summer, we learned that Robbins lost her leg due to the plane crash. Who saw that coming? Like I said, Shonda did it again. This will definitely make for an interesting dynamic with the other characters.

Still On the Hunt

Side Notes:

  • Although cleared for surgery, Derek said his hand went numb. Did it really or was it nerves over operating and losing his best friend?
  • Love, love, love Meredith and Cristina’s facetime sessions. Especially when Cristina was watching the “trainwreck” of a surgery.
  • Bailey’s no longer the Nazi! Say hello to Booty Call Bailey.
  • Just one quick mention of the late Lexie. Did anyone miss her? How about Teddy?
Overall, a solid episode back. Grey’s Anatomy always knows how to bring the drama and they did not fail in the Season 9 premiere. What did you think, TV Fanatics? Was it a good follow up to “Flight?”

I didn't like the new episode at all; it was a little too disjointed for me. But then again, I really think that Grey's has run its course. I don't know...
Mark's passing was very sad, and while it was sad to see him go, I was touched by how they did that little short piece of him with Sophia, and saying 'Shhhh" so sweet. Perfect in fact.

Just wanna say something, the farewell to Mark Sloan was so much better compared to the one to Lexie. Lexie died in like 10 minutes within a stupid dialogue. The tribute to Mark Sloan was really good, with footages of the past, everyone around him, building up the emotion. That was good writing ! Second, I was fucking stressed out about Arizona's fate, we really knew nothing about her until the freaking last minute ! So happy that she survived but quite shocked about her leg, even though it was a possibility. Finally, who else had totally forgotten about April ? I had forgotten she was part of the show until Owen showed up at the farm !

also, after reading some comments I have to say that no way Callie cut off Arizona's leg herself - surgeons are not allowed to operate on family, remember? so, she must have given the permission to do that in order to save Arizona's life or something... Which must be so hard for her, and hard for Arizona to forgive at first as it seems (Im sure she will eventually, they always do)
and I also have to say I really like the fact they did the season premiere just the way they did: first episode showing outcomes and the second one is gonna take us back to the woods. Its gonna be heartbreaking to see the next week's episode knowing that eventually Mark is not gonna make it... God, I really loved that character!

yes, Sloan.. I wasn't ready to say goodbye either. my boyfriend who sat next to me while i was watching the show on my laptop handed me a box of kleenex, a really NEEDED box of kleenex! and that was within the first 5 minutes of the premiere! it was a great premiere, I would say to me, the most emotional one. Surprisingly even George's departure wasn't that emotional (maybe because I knew that he was not gonna make it anyway? although - I still miss him A LOT) and I actually thought Arizona was dead which was a shock and even more shocking was to see her leg amputated and learn that she seems to be blaming Callie?
but on a bit of a different note - what's up with Avery's hair!? and poor Cristina - olive green scrubs!? I mean seriously!? get back to SGH NOW!

well 1st off shame on me i just watched all 8 seasons this past 2 weeks got down to final show and season 9 starts....well i cried and cried i hated seeing Mark die the man added so much charm....but i feel in my heart he lost the will to live when the true love of his life the *soulmate* Lexie died.....he knew in his heart his lil girl was well taken care of....i was shocked to see Robins lived i didn't see that coming....and Derek well he can do no wrong in my book he either makes your heart sad or happy....this truly is a great series and i hope i enjoy season 9 as i did the other 8.

Overall a good episode...though I think Shonda needs to cut Callie a break, after George, her homophobe family, her accident, and now this one-two punch. I agree with those who said the overall tone was more depressing than sad, making the last-act scene in the airport bar much-welcome and much-needed. One thing that really peeved me was the portrayal of the docs at Mayo clinic, relying on easy Midwestern stereotypes of simple/generous/longwinded folks. The Midwest has people just as focused and driven as anywhere else, and besides, these are world-renowned physicians. Also, MN isn't always covered in 10 feet of snow and not everyone wears turtle necks. Also have to mention I found the Arizona twist totally predictable, and kept finding it really annoying every time they referred to her in the past tense (like "Arizona would have wanted this" etc.). Shonda fake-outs can be so transparent sometimes. I am excited about this storyline, though.

OMG!!!! It was so sad... I can't believe that Mark died...
Right now I am so deppressed... I really need things to get better, please Shonda...
Plus for the whole episode I thought that Arizona was dead...
Was I the only one???

OMG I so disagree, the return of the show was SO BORING.. Dereck was so tanned he looked like he has spent 3 week in Hawai instead of the woods.. Yes Mark's death was sad but the flash backs didnt really add anything to the show. I wish they had killed Owen instead. An then of course DRAMA in Arizona/Callie couple. Rhimes can not make those two happy for very long, not sure why she wrote a gay story line only to show them in pain. Now that Mark is dead, she had to cut Arizon'a leg! come on... I saw previews of next week episode and I think they should have started with that one as an opener to keep the intensity as its peak. Lets hope it gets better.

Did we or did we not see Lexie at the end? On a pig farm? WTH! Next week will explain everything, so it better be good. I hated to see Sloan die and I hate the new guy who took over for Arizona. Too many tears last night!

OMG; so so sad! I haven't cried that much since season 8 finale! Yes I knew he was leaving the show but still...... heartbreaking the way his heartbeat kept getting slower and slower and I loved his character. Whenever they leave the show (and not just Greys) the actors say they want to "try other things out, do film" ect.. but I have never really seen any of them after they leave the show! They should just stay where they are! I think Dereks hand really did go numb, he's still going to have problems. I love how Bailey is now BCB! lol! I loved that little twist of humour mixed in with the sadness! I did miss Lexie and kept thinking of the last episode of her dying and Mark worrying about her before he went unconcious. I didn't see that coming with Arizona but in hindsight should have realized that considering her tying a tourniquet around her leg at the crash. To be honest, I kind of forgot about April until I saw Owen with her! Way to go Shonda!! I love this show and your writing! Also kudos to Sara Rameriz - such a GREAT actress!

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 Episode 1 Quotes

The world keeps going without you.

Dying changes everything. There is the emotional fall out, sure. But there's also the practical stuff. Who's going to do your job? Who's going to take care of your family?
