Hawaii Five-0 Review: Off And Running

"La O Na Makuahine:Mother’s Day

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 kicked off with the Chin-Ho, Kono and Malia-based cliffhanger we have been biting our nails over all summer. While my guess from the season finale of how Kono could be saved was really close (Adam saved her after Chin-Ho called him), my hope that Malia opening her eyes meant that she would survive didn't fair as well.

Can we hope that Chin-Ho won’t go down a horribly dark path over Malia’s death because he was able to catch Frank Delano and shoot him in the face with a shotgun? I’m worried that we are going to have to deal with “Evil Chin-Ho” now for several episodes, which would drag down the overall feel of the show.

The premiere also gave us a complete answer to the questions that were asked most often during the show's sophomore season. To wit: What is Shelburne? It was Doris McGarrett’s code name when she was a spy before Steve was born.

It was even better to receive the answer directly from Doris McGarrett herself as she explained why she disappeared for 20 years to Steve. I’m not surprised that Steve had some anger about his mom faking her own death. I was very glad that he got past it, though, towards the end of the episode when he called her “mom” instead of “Doris.”

In addition to Christine Lahti coming on board as Mrs. McGarrett, Michelle Borth returned as Catherine Rawlins. She's now a series regular. While they didn’t explain why she is suddenly island-bound in the Navy, I enjoyed watching her and Doris together too much to really complain about it.

Speaking of Doris and Catherine, I’m very curious why Doris didn’t shoot Wo Fat and, more importantly, why Wo Fat spent years trying to find her and didn’t even raise his pistol. I’m sensing that any relief I have over finding out who Shelburne was is going to quickly be replaced with questions about Wo Fat and Doris’ interaction and relationship.

My only complaint about the opener was the way the writers decided to have Wo Fat escape. I just don’t get why it had to involve a helicopter picking up an armored car with a giant skill-crane style claw. Had they cut to a shot of the three-eyed alien from Toy Story pointing and saying Oooooh, The Claw!! it would not have surprised me... and might have made it better.

I will say (claw-copter aside) that the rest of the action from Peter Lenkov’s story was great. I cheered out loud when Kono jumped straight up as the guy tried to run her down and then shot him through the windshield while standing on the hood.

In conclusion, this week’s premiere was excellent and the addition of Lahti as Doris made for some fun Hawaii Five-O Quotes. I’m excited to see where Lenov decides to take her and Catherine in relation to the core team. What did you think of the premiere? Do you like the addition of Doris McGarrett?

What are you talking about George. Aren't Chin Ho & Kono Asian?

Huge fan of the show, however, this episode was not as good as previous ones. The helicopter scene was pure crap. An the cheesy "he's your brother nonsense" is really going to kill the momentum of the season.

I love Kono, she my favorite character.
She went all McGarrett on bad guy ass lol!! I didn't care for the Mama/Steve storyline I didn't want to see it or why did bring Cath to the team, to me she is the new Lori 2.0 I don't care about those two newbies. I feel this season the show is all about Steve, its leaning toward to the Steve show.

Great to have the show back. It was a long summer. If the opener is any indication this season should be great. The only miss was the helicopter snatch of the armored car. Yes it was right out of James Bond - "License to Kill" and "You Only Live Twice" to be exact. Why did they drop it 40 to 50 feet into the water. The fall would have killed or seriously injured anyone inside. Why not gently lower it to the surface? Also Max sure made a quick recovery.

Overall, I thought the premiere was very good. Both Alex and Christine were good in their scenes together. Alex conveyed his pain and confusion so well. I bawled my eyes out at Chin Ho's sad scene in the kitchen. They've really created a steep mountain for him to climb this season.
I thought the Wo Fat escape with the helicopter was a bit too James Bond, but so what? Very cinematic.
Why did Doris let Wo Fat escape? Please writers, don't make Steve and Wo Fat brothers. That would be too much.

Doris is Wo Fat's mother too... The 'complicated' she mentioned at the start... ???

@George, I agree completely. It's a show based in Hawaii, it's about time they started showing that.

"On the Kono issue, she's my favourite character and I was glad that she survived." The day she departs and they white wash the show, I stop watching unless she is replaced by another Asian...it is Hawaii for goodness sakes. If they want to white-wash, they need to move the show to the shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin or Hilton Head Beach in SC!

Malia Weston (Chin Ho's TV wife) was the token Asian-American. I think I saw her once since their "marriage" last Christmas. Actually, they showed more of Lori Weston (the white female) than Mali Weston (the Asian female) last season. Wonder who the next token Asian would be..I am certain there will be one!

The Steve/Danny/Doris Cargument might be my favourite one yet, Doris's just as witty and sarcastic as Danny. Though I have a feeling that she brings nothing but trouble but she's steve's mum and in the end you would try to help your mum no matter what right? On the Kono issue, she's my favourite character and I was glad that she survived. I really felt for Chin though, but I think he made the right choice, kind of. Between Kono's physical abilities and her basically being born in the water, I think she had a better chance of surviving. Overall it was an excellent episode.
