Hawaii Five-0 Review: Off And Running

"La O Na Makuahine:Mother’s Day

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 kicked off with the Chin-Ho, Kono and Malia-based cliffhanger we have been biting our nails over all summer. While my guess from the season finale of how Kono could be saved was really close (Adam saved her after Chin-Ho called him), my hope that Malia opening her eyes meant that she would survive didn't fair as well.

Can we hope that Chin-Ho won’t go down a horribly dark path over Malia’s death because he was able to catch Frank Delano and shoot him in the face with a shotgun? I’m worried that we are going to have to deal with “Evil Chin-Ho” now for several episodes, which would drag down the overall feel of the show.

The premiere also gave us a complete answer to the questions that were asked most often during the show's sophomore season. To wit: What is Shelburne? It was Doris McGarrett’s code name when she was a spy before Steve was born.

It was even better to receive the answer directly from Doris McGarrett herself as she explained why she disappeared for 20 years to Steve. I’m not surprised that Steve had some anger about his mom faking her own death. I was very glad that he got past it, though, towards the end of the episode when he called her “mom” instead of “Doris.”

In addition to Christine Lahti coming on board as Mrs. McGarrett, Michelle Borth returned as Catherine Rawlins. She's now a series regular. While they didn’t explain why she is suddenly island-bound in the Navy, I enjoyed watching her and Doris together too much to really complain about it.

Speaking of Doris and Catherine, I’m very curious why Doris didn’t shoot Wo Fat and, more importantly, why Wo Fat spent years trying to find her and didn’t even raise his pistol. I’m sensing that any relief I have over finding out who Shelburne was is going to quickly be replaced with questions about Wo Fat and Doris’ interaction and relationship.

My only complaint about the opener was the way the writers decided to have Wo Fat escape. I just don’t get why it had to involve a helicopter picking up an armored car with a giant skill-crane style claw. Had they cut to a shot of the three-eyed alien from Toy Story pointing and saying Oooooh, The Claw!! it would not have surprised me... and might have made it better.

I will say (claw-copter aside) that the rest of the action from Peter Lenkov’s story was great. I cheered out loud when Kono jumped straight up as the guy tried to run her down and then shot him through the windshield while standing on the hood.

In conclusion, this week’s premiere was excellent and the addition of Lahti as Doris made for some fun Hawaii Five-O Quotes. I’m excited to see where Lenov decides to take her and Catherine in relation to the core team. What did you think of the premiere? Do you like the addition of Doris McGarrett?

I liked the episode other than having Chin-Ho's wife being killed didnt really like that. I also thought as others wrote that the reason McG's mom didnt shoot Wu Fat is because he is her son. It makes sense that the reason they brought her out of retirement was because she had an intimate relationship with Wu Fat undercover before she got married. So she was the best person to do whatever they needed done. Her character Doris did say her undercover thing was complicated. This scenario fits complicated like a glove.

I blame the low ratings cmpletely on shelburne and I hope they finnish it before it's to late. Unfortunatly they have put themselfs in a position where the only way to do that is to kill Steves mom for real this time, but it's their own fault.

George: What is with all the racial comments. I think you are being ridiculous!!

I agree about that big claw problem. Ridiculous. Seriously, if you're driving down the highway and some helicopter with a giant claw is above you, aren't you going to be able to hit the brakes, swerve or do anything to avoid it? Not to mention, these guys were police vehicles.

Very disappointed with the show. I want my S1 show back. The show where Steve knows everything and is super seal. He had 0 action scenes last night. The McG I know would have realized that there was something fishy during the "shoot out" between his mom and Wo Fat. He had to wait for the ballistics to realize that? Whoever is writing the character of Steve needs to be fired. And btw, put the tie back on Danno. And get rid of all this soap opera crap.

Did anyone notice the ratings just were just awful for what was a pretty big premiere that had been well-hyped? I also thought the show was predictable and wasn't surprised about anything, except the use of the ridiculous, over-the-top claw thing. Overall, though, it was fun to watch and I'm surprised about the very low ratings.

It was as predictable as I expected. Moma McG was awful. Steve got over what she put everyone through far too quickly. Why did no one bother to tell Mary. The writers have no idea what to do with Danny except give him stupid carguments. I've no interest in his character anymore. The booboo comment was pathetic. I could never see Steve saying this.
I didn't mind the over the top action. Other than that there was no substance. DDK was great but Malia didnt get enough screentime for me to feel upset at her death. Why do our guys keep taking the law into their own hands.
Adam was great and I'm beginning to find the Adam/Kono relationship the most believeable of the show.

Episode was amazing.
To those whining about Catherine as a regular having her on the show may not be so bad. Still unsure about her joining the Five-0 team but with her around Steve is more casual as Catherine humanizes him. Also Chin was very frightening in the episode especially when he killed Delano, I had no idea that kind-hearted Kelly could be so dark.

About Doris and Wo Fat: 1. How come Doris missed him? 2. Much more intriguing, how come Wo Fat didn't shoot a single time? So obviously, none of them wanted to hurt the other. Two theories: 1. Wo Fat is Doris's son, but until then no one knew who the other was. Possible. 2. There's a completely different explanation, and - among other people - the former governor knew or found out. One thing is sure, her former assistant knew and both were killed for it. Wo Fat is now blackmailing Doris for some nefarious goal. Can we think of other possibilities?

I think Shelburne was finished when Joe told Steve it was him. IMO they needed a story line to deal with Steves absence and brought it back.
