Not a home run but very enjoyable nevertheless. I thought the whole episode proceeded too quickly and was wondering whether it would be a two-parter. I would have like Tiva stuck in the elevator longer and maybe have a major character in dire condition (though not killed); Ducky and Tim being the obvious candidates. My only complaint was the FBI assult team that was killed. How did they so easily find Harper Dearing on the street and once they found him, why not take him out then and there rather than luring him back to a motel room. Plus, when the FBI agent saw the timer for the bomb, she had over four seconds to warn the others and make a run for it to get at least partially out of range. In addition to the thigh master comments, I liked Harper's son talking about why he joined the Navy. Love of country, as it should be.

I have to chime in with so many others. I also felt the season premiere left a lot to be desired. Lacking on many, many levels.
1. Gibbs seeing Abby and sighing to himself that she was okay. The old Gibbs would never have let her leave the lab (where he was in the finale)without checking to make sure she was okay.
2. McGee only being 'knicked' with a piece of glass. He was a step away from the window when the blast went off...not even cuts to the face or hands/arms, etc... definately lacking there.
3. Tiva...come on already! Either get a room or leave it to a brother/sister relationship once and for all.
4. Palmer's role and Ducky. I do have to say, this was one of the better parts of the episode. Pretty dramatic in beginning...but with that said it quickly went luck warm. On his first 'big' role in the group Palmer turns into an in-experienced, whining, college kid; and Ducky comes in to save the day??
5. Gibbs/Dearing ending...so too obvious.
It was an OK episode. I'm tired of the whole Tiva thing. They should just move on with this story line. I'm happy to see Gibbs building something again. Some of the best dialogue and most interesting scenes take place in the basement. I really wish the writers and directors would make Gibbs more animated this season. Sometimes he seems like a robot with no humor or emotion and, of course, I want to see him in a real relationship with an interesting woman.

I thought it was a terrific show - no negatives at all - and am so glad the whole cast is back and I look forward to each week's episodes. I'm suprised by the negative comments -

Wonderful episode for MANY reasons. First up, well balanced. Every character had one or two moments to shine.
I don't have a single complaint about this episode.
The family vibe was tremendous. Tony and Ziva in the elevator were fanastic, Abby and Ziva and their little scene proves how amazing their chemistry is and that a female friendship adds so much to the show, Gibbs finding McGee and holding his face was intense, Ducky and Palmer made me cry, Tony's and Gibbs' exchange was endearing and the showdown plus the last moment gave me goosebumps. Wonderful writing and acting.

@Michael.
I echo your comments. What boring sludge NCIS has become. I naively thought they might kill off a main character to stop the smug fest-NCIS is becoming.
Ducky has a heart attack and has to go slow for a few episodes?
How about Ducky`s sickly/creepy assistant? I was really hoping , at least he would cop it.
Tone and Zebra need to get it on as the sexual tension is getter staler than last week`s socks.
The show needs a death and a major bad guy. Please,
Michael

So does anyone think that since Ziva father called her that season 10 were going to find out why Trent Kort is in Ziva home country?

Am I the only one that felt sorry for Dearing in the end? I also feel that there was a scene cut when Gibbs killed him. It should have had Gibbs laying him down after stabbing him and walking out after turning the tape recorder back on whilst Dearing bled out. It would have been more in line with the whole "Gibbs and Dearing on the same wavelength" thing that they had going in the end. Otherwise it is Gibbs just being vengeful and we all know that he has come a long way from that.
Also, I know I'm one of the few that actually liked Jamie Lee Curtis' character so I'm glad that Tony asked about Ryan. Gibbs needs someone like her because he needs a challenge in both his professional and personal life and she was great at rocking his equilibrium on both levels. And you can guarantee Ryan will be back for at least one episode because there is no way that Gibbs will let the loose end of the criminal ex husband that was released by Dearing get away! I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Its just becoming so boring the standalone storyline I would of like to see a recurring bad guy

I enjoyed this episode but agree that it seemed rushed a little -- I think because they had to tie up a story arc for every character, including Ryan (or set the stage, like for McGee contacting his father). There was one thing that bothered me, though -- and it bothered me even though I like hard boiled detective types in mysteries who take out the bad guy like he deserves -- and what bothered me was the Bill of Rights being thrown out as Presidential, FBI, and NCIS policy for when they really really hate somebody. What Gibbs had done to the killer of his family is powerful because it was illegal and he has to live with it while knowing he'd do it again. If such really were to be government policy, what you would have is scenes like the FBI in the motel, blasting away without any concern for where bullets might go and through a door without even seeing what they're shooting at??

I think the most precious moments in the show for me was Jimmy and Ducky and you could see the care in them, jimmy was concerned for Ducky and at the end Gibbs looking around and thinking my families is ok, that was precious. And the stab to Dearing i liked it, a gunshot would been quicker and not as dramatic a scene, and in all it was a good first show i am anxious about the next one, i know how much gibbs cares for abby and she is having problems should be good. And i liked the look Gibbs gave when Tony asked if he called ryan he looked like i got more important things to do. A good ending to her relationship on the show

I, too was somewhat disappointed that Tony and Ziva didn't become more intimate or have more sexual tension that was acted upon in the elevator. They just bickered as usual, so that was kind of boring, until Abby opened the elevator, bless her. I also felt like Dearing's death was anticlimatic, but somehow it still fit the whole zeitgeist of the story arc.
I agree, too, that Ducky and Jimmy Palmer's scenes were the best of the ep! But then, Abby, Ducky and McGee are the holy three to me, and I would not watch the show if they were not on it. Ducky stole every scene he was in, and I was tremendously relieved that he is okay and recovering. I loved the show's final scene, with Gibbs looking at all his collegues and friends and realizing how precious they all are to him and to NCIS. Go Navy!

From what I have been reading, there are no plan for Ryan this season. So the question was kind of a write off, like asking if he called his ex wives. I sat on the edge of the chair most of the time and was surprised when Gibbs used the knife. But as someone said that would have made the death slower. All in all, I thought it was a good show.

I think that of the SP's that GG has written, this was the best. Doesn't live up to "ToC", "Kill Ari" but was still well above average.

Agree with episode assessment ... Good solid show kicking off repercussions to come. Please find better love interest for Gibbs ... Jamie Lee Curtis didn't have any chemistry with Harmon/Gibbs.

Haven't seen the show yet as I'm in Australia, wanted to check out how it went. It probably does seem rushed, but keep in mind that back when hour long shows started they were over 52 minutes long, now my season 9 NCIS episodes have the credits running just under 41 minutes - that's 11 minutes less an episode they have to tell a story - all because the ads go for 1/3 of the time. No wonder DVD sales are the preferred viewing method for many fans.

And now Abby I think she be they one to have a hard time and we se weeks to come. Ducky and Palmer were the nest part. During is Gibbs took him down. I like the end it nice ending. Next week looks good. I wish the Tiva hype would been what was said tho. Anyway still good episode a lot better then last years

There were already 5 episodes to this Dearing arc. I think Gibbs using his knife was different and a good twist. Everyone likes something different and for every one who seems a little disappointed, i have read several others who were more than happy.

Like Michael (first commenter) I too wondered why the FBI agent didn't kill him right there in the street while he was watching the TV sets through the store windows.
I like how Gibbs felt the need to kill him with a knife to the guts. He needed the visceral closure that a quick bullet wouldn't have provided. Edgy and dark, that.
I think Abby is back to her chipper self. The last scene was five months later and we saw her smiling as she walked into the building. Oh and Ziva and Tony need to get a room. Bigger than an elevator. Perhaps with a bed. :)

I will agree this season opener for all the hype was severely lacking........and it was wrapped up too fast and too neatly........
However, I think the aftershocks will be felt the rest of the season......
Tony asking about Ryan??? PLEASE don't bring back Jamie Lee Curtis!!!!
What is Gibbs wanting to build in his basement?

Did not live up to the hype. 1 elevator scene wasn't about Tiva, besides I think they're better as sister/brother than couple. 2 though the end was airtight poignant, it was anticlimactic. Gibbs used knife because he wasn't having to shoot out and never go anywhere without a knife (rule 9). I did like.mcgee talking to penny and tony asking about Ryan ( though I didn't like her, it made sense to call her ot at least that shed be mentioned). It was not as outstanding as rescuing ziva in the terrorist camp, but it was good.

Yes i thought the dearing story should have lasted longer, and curious as to what gibbs is building in his basement. I thought the crime drama was great. Acting like a family wondering about each other. The reason Gibbs stabbed him i think is he wanted to watch him die for killing his family more of a slow death. The only thing i really did not like is tony asking did he call ryan, was not needed at all in the episode

Great rundown. I agree, it wasn't the best season premiere but it was pretty good. Then again there have been 10 of them so some are bound to be better than others. Still solid all around. Love Tiva!

For all that hype to start the season this fell flat. It was boring show with no exictement at all. Also disappointed that McGee had like maybe 1 minute or so of scene time in the first half hour of the show. Hopefully the shows get better then this because for a season opener it really lacked.
