Once Upon a Time Review: The Curse of Consequences

at . Comments

Once Upon a Time Season 2 kicked off tonight, and although the curse may be "Broken" that doesn't mean everything is suddenly sunshine and pixie dust in Storybrooke.

As a matter of fact, our fairy tale favorites may have just taken a sharp turn toward the dark side.

Although everyone now remembers his/her fairy tale origins, living under the curse for 28 years has its consequences. According to Regina, they can't go back to the fairy tale world, which means that their old and new lives will now merge into one. In other words, things have gotten even more complicated in Storybrooke.

Fairy Tales in Storybrooke

Take Rumplestiltskin, who finally found his one true love but couldn't seem to overcome his innate need for power and vengeance to keep her. When he  promised Belle he wouldn't kill Regina, I never believed a word of it - but in Rumple's mind, he spoke the truth.

Rumple wouldn't actually do the killing. He just unleashed a soul sucker to track her down. The funny part was that he really thought that loophole would save him when Belle found out. Yet was it the way he toyed with words that kept Belle from leaving? Or was it his honesty and Belle's need to save him?

It was touching when Rumple told Belle their chipped cup was the only possession he truly cherished, but perhaps it meant even more when he admitted that he believed he's still a monster. Belle believes her love can save him, that she can find the good inside. I say she's in for a world full of hurt.

Across town, Regina found some unlikely allies. Charming and Snow came to her rescue because they believed killing her was simply the wrong thing to do.  Emma was there because her son begged her to save his mother. But now that Regina has her magic back and Emma and Snow have been banished to a very different fairy tale world, will Regina be swayed by her son to help save them?

Much like Rumple, Regina is driven by a need for power and control. As Belle is the one person who can reach Rumple's heart, Henry is that person for Regina.

Regina loves her son but how far will she go for him? Will she work to return Emma and Snow to Storybrooke or will she see this new twist in the curse as a blessing.

And I loved her confrontation with Charming. Everyone was playing nice while she was magic-less and being hunted by a wraith but once the threat was gone and her powers returned, she was quick to have her wallpaper strangle him. That wall paper has always had a seriously creepy vibe. Let's just say it's not a room I'd want to spend a lot of time in late at night.

Reactions to the broken curse were well played. Charming, Snow, Ruby and the dwarves all celebrated. Most of the town wanted Regina dead and who could blame them? Emma was the one left out in the cold.

How do you handle finding out that your long lost parents are actually fairy tale characters who sent you away through a magic portal as a baby? And that they are your age? The happiness of finding out the truth didn't wipe away 28 years of living alone with no answers.

I couldn't help but feel for Emma as Snow pushed for a big reconciliation. Emma was struggling to deal with this new reality when she told her newfound mom in this Once Upon a Time quote

Emma: Can we do everything later, like with a glass of wine? Several bottles. | permalink

The season premiere left us with a lot more questions than answers. Will Mulan and Sleeping Beauty be allies or enemies to Snow and Emma? Will Belle really stick by Rumplestiltskin? Will Regina save Emma for Henry? Who was the guy who got the mysterious post card and who sent it?

There are lots of reasons to tune in for more Once Upon a Time this season. Next week can't come soon enough.

Can this show get ANY MORE PERFECT? seriously? SO I guess now in the show we will have THREE different settings instead of two(FTL and Storybrooke)... Also my heart breaks for Regina.....the girl's more confused and conflicted than even Rumple is now... PERFECT episode:
Can't wait for Regina's redemption. Its such a fascinating and great concept and I have no doubts taht she will do everything to get her son back, now. She chose him over the curse after all.

I think it was Bael in the beginning! :o) and I love the different twist that they add to the old fairytales that is what makes this an awesome show!!

I don't think the man in the beginning was Bael. Maybe because I want Bael to be more evil than Regina and Rumple. I don't think Rumpbelle will last unless Belle goes dark and I never really care for them. I did not like that they had Mulan to be in love with Phillip. I also don't like that Regina redemption will be because of Henry. I wonder why Prince Phillip castle and the save cavern was safe from the curse and who else is in Fairytale land.

What a comeback! Cannot believe that Charming and Snow are separated once again! Poor thing, lost his wife and daughter all at once, and once again. At least he now has a grandson. I really hope the mistery man is BOTH Henry's father and Baelfire. That would be so perfect and strange at the same time. Will Red Hiding Hood still be a wolf now that everything is back to normal? I'm sad for Philip, I used to watch Sleeping Beauty every week when I was little... Mulan loving Philip? Weird. I don't think he loved her back... Or this last year when they were together something would have happened. He loved Aurora! Just like in the story. Rumbelle still the best couple! So relieved she came back for him. Even though we all know he will continue with his wrong doings, until of course, he gets his son back. Totally love that this show makes me feel 12 again!

Baelfire got the card. I think dr whale, whoever he is , sent it. I am intrigued by the aurora, mulan Philip triangle. Did Philip say " I love you" to aurora or mulan before he got his soul taken? So glad the show is back! Emma and snow have to repair fairy tale land now so everyone can go back.

Not happy, I'll be honest. Perhaps my hopes were raised too high by an excellent season 1. Mulan in love with Prince Phillip? What happened to Shang? Princess Aurora came across as whiny and shrewish. Prince Phillip killed by a wraith? Those are my two favourite tales and "Once", to me, mangled them. I did feel for Emma, too. That was well done. Henry and Belle are both in for worlds of pain, I believe. But swallowing the "twist" they put on "Sleeping Beauty" and "Mulan" is hard for me. I'll give it another episode or two for them to convince me. I'm also confused why some fairytale characters got their endings (Cinderella and Pinocchio and Snow White) in fairytale land, but obviously not others.

I think the man in the beginning is Rumble's son. Or possibly Henry's father. Or both?

Was the guy who got the postcard Hook? Thought it was Philip, but somehow that doesn't make sense.

Mulan has always been my favorite Disney character and I was really excited when they added her in to the show. I didn't expect her to love Phillip. I wasn't sure where the show was going to go once the curse was broken. In fact I was a little afraid it had been broken too soon. But I like the new twist in Emma and Snow going back to fairytale world. They need to find Jefferson in Storybrooke and get that hat working again. The only part that threw me was everyone switching between using people's fairytale names and their Storybrooke names. Snow said David instead of Charming or James, they went after Mr. Gold not Ruumplstiltskin, etc.

I loved this episode!! I can't wait for next week. This is definitely the best drama on TV.
