Hawaii Five-0 Review: All Aboard the USS Bromance

For all of us who have enjoyed the "bromance" moments and the "carguments" over the last three seasons, this week’s Hawaii Five-0 episode gave us something we have been hoping for for a while. Steve and Danny. Hanging out. Just the two of them.

Of course, given that the time they spent together included being boat-jacked, stranded at sea in a sinking dingy, chased by sharks and finding a crime scene at sea, maybe they want to actually relax a bit next time. Still, you have to admit the two of them on the ocean created some of the best Hawaii Five-0 quotes we've enjoyed this year.

McGarrett and Danny On A Boat

Long time viewers know that Danny has not been a big fan of the ocean. Learning that Danny's childhood friend drowned trying to help him explained a lot about his dislike, but also some nice info about Danny himself.

This was one of the first glimpses we've had into Danny’s childhood. I hope we get a few more. We know a lot about Steve, while Kono and Chin talk about being kids fairly often. The same can't be said for this snarky character.

I’m also thrilled that this installment was better put together than the last episode. The pacing was well done, action was consistent - and watching Kono take down Scates and then handcuff him to the rail was pretty awesome. My only confusion was Catherine coming along with Chin and Kono to raid Scates’ apartment.

When did Catherine join Five-0? Why would a Navy communication officer have a bullet proof vest and gun to wear off duty to a crime scene? I can see an ex-Navy Seal like Steve having that type of gear, but Catherine is not a Seal... unless I missed her being reassigned.

The irony is that Michelle Borth fit right in with Kono and Chin and would make a great addition to the team. Except for that whole sleeping with Steve thing, which might be awkward around the office the next day.

Finally, how long did it take Lost fans to recognize the actress playing Katie Burgess as Cynthia Watros, who played Libby? It was good to see another former Lost alumni on the show – albeit briefly. Speaking of on the show again, here's hoping that Steve’s mom returns soon, as I really want to see more of Doris McGarrett in action.

Great episode. Showed off the true strength of the show - McDanno plus some heartfelt Chin and Kono scenes. Loved the banter and back and forth between the boys. I enjoyed the "she's not my girlfriend" line as I think of Catherine as friends with benefits, but nothing more so it fit. Nice to get small bits of Danny back story, certainly explained his aversion to the ocean. Also, nice continuity with the Malia and Adam references. Love to see the personalities and character moments with the core 4. My only beef with the ep was once again Catherine was forced in. She didn't need to be in the episode at all. The ride along with Chin and Kono with the vest and gun was ridiculous. She's not 5-0, she's not a cop. She is military intelligence, a desk jockey, not security or military police. She had no business at a possible crime scene. There is no reason for her to be in every episode. Actually, there is no reason or purpose to her being a regular. A little goes a long way with that character. Action show, not romance drama.

Thanks for the positive review this week, Jim! I agree with all of it! Steve and Danny's bromance was front and center for the first 3rd of the episode, and we finally advanced their friendship and Danny's backstory. I have come to the conclusion that Danny snarks the most when he is really, honestly scared - whether he's just been shot at, or almost blown to smithereens, or drifting around the ocean in a leaking dinghy with the possibility of becoming a shark's lunch! The worse it seems, the bigger a defense mechanism it is! I think Steve recognizes this about Danny and has the patience of a saint because he understands Danny very well after 2 years as partners. Danny's story about his friend's death was very well delivered, as well as the snarkiness - it actually showed us more of who Danny is - I believe that's called character development!

Again the ratings were bad. NBC Revolution.. 3.0 8.01
ABC Castle.. 2.2 10.61
CBS Hawaii Five-0.. 1.9 8.39 Peter needs to take some action my guess is that fans are Fed-Up with the McDanno show don't get me wrong I love them but this season the bickering and whinning from Danny is to much. I want the Navy SEAL Steve back!!

Michael@ Sorry I find nothing funny about it at all and have no interest in seeing Danny play the role of "wife". He's more like playing the role of a child and he needs to grow up and act like a cop for just one episode.
The over the top bickering and bromance scenes are becoming the worst aspect of the show and ruining the characters. They act like idiots when they are together.

Mrs cleaver

Catherine following Steve into the kitchen with the bat - lol.
7. Then they need to END this Mom/Shelburne/WoFat never ending storyline.

Good review Jim of a fun episode.
My Thoughts:
1. Steve needs to return his mothers hat.
2. Danny was starting to bug me with his on and on whining till he told the story about his friend drowning. Then I cut his whining some slack cause I figured he was pretty panicked about drowning himself. I love that he wore a collared button down shirt fishing. Jersey boy.
3. I thought Steve's "she's not my girlfriend" reminded me of a 15 year old high school guy who was being teased about a girl he likes by his buddies. It made me laugh, his character has some "emotional issues" ya know. She's his girlfriend, as Dan pointed out whether he admits it or not.
4. Max giving Dan the sunburn creme "apply it liberally" lol.
5. The dead guy's pretty young wife opens the door and I thought "she did it". Surprise(not) - I was right.
6. Overall good episode, so glad we are back to "crime of the week" with the Fab Four.
6. CAN'T wait for breakfast with Psycho Mom next week! Catherine following Steve in with the bat - ha ha.
7. Then I hope they quickly end this tiring never ending Shelburne/Mom/Wo Fat storyline.

@Kelly Danny is like a wife to steve that how danny act like a wife its funny

There is nothing funny about Danny's constant whining and complaining. Why does Steve put up with it. Do the writers really think anyone would enjoy being nagged to death. So Steve just has a thing with Catherine. He's happy to use her and have sex with her and for her to endanger her life for him, but she's just a friend with benefits. Huh, I wonder if she knows that.
Chin getting indignant that someone may be getting away with murder seems quite hypocritical. I'm really trying to forget that the writers turned him into a murderer. The characters are becoming more shallow as the seasons continue. I hardly recognize the kick ass Navy SEAL from season one. He's just part of a bad comdedy act now.

Cann is the worst over-actor on TV - the constant hand waving, gesturing, shouting, and slapstick drives me crazy. The real tragedy is he has infected O'Loughlin with the same amateurish mannerisms and bad acting moves. When I think back to how cool and self-controlled Alex O was in Moonlight, I could just cry - my favorite male TV actor is gone, replace by a stupid, fake-Italian, robot who can't deliver the simplest line without pounding his chest, shaking his fingers, and waving his hands. Give us a break, for God's sake - don't know if it's the director or producer who's pushing this copycat acting style, let's cut it out and showcase Alex's natural skills.

The episode was really good, and anyone who has watched H5O from the beginning knows that Danny complains aboujt everything (except his daughter), so deal with it! His scenes with Steve are good, and the writers did exactly what most everyone asked for...more "bromance." And Chin will always be "bigbrother/cousin" to Kono, so his concerns for Adam are well founded...in his mind. Catherine is perfect for Steve and has had an excuse for being there for him in every episode so far while her ship is in port. [Sailors in port have duty schedules--shifts--just like normal workers, and having been 'gone' so long on TAD--temporary assignment--so, of course she would be around a lot] Besides, if Steve didn't want her, he wouldn't have hugged he when he returned! As for the 'fans' who disguise their comments as Dish/hopper ads...CUT IT OUT! Your on every TV Fanatic review! Good review Jim.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Episode 3 Quotes

Steve: Set the Hook!
Danny: Stop the backseat fishing!

Steve: Time out, I thought the mission today was to get you your first tuna
Danny: Why does everything have to be a mission?
Steve: . The goal was to help you catch an Ahi.
Danny: There's no goal, there's no mission; we're just fishing. We have a couple of laughs, maybe we catch a fish, maybe we don't
