You guys are all forgetting the most important thing. Cullen was telling the story of what happened. More than likely he was fabricating the story to keep people safe ;)
That way it won't be ridiculous to bring her back or to even find out he tortured Swede to death.
The candle stayed lit and didn't burn down the place for a significant reason.

I am fed up with all the glowing remarks that seem to come from every direction these days when a show decides to kill off one or more of its main characters. Words such as "bold', "daring" and ground breaking" are often used to describe such a decision. Sorry, but I'm not jumping on the bandwagon in this case. Yes, sometimes it is a good idea to shake things up and create a new direction for a show by eliminating a few of the regulars in the cast. And with some shows, like The walking Dead, it would be ridiculous if some of the main characters didn't die now and then. However, the decision to have The Swede kill Lily - and in such a horrible fashion no less - was, IMO, a terrible one. The romance between Lily and Bohannon was just heating up and now she's dead, at the hands of a psycho. I was really looking forward to the two of them building the railroad together. And now that story arc has been obliterated. Bohannon comes home from the war to find his wife and son hanging dead on hi

I don't think the writers need to 'listen' I'm pretty sure bringing her back is their plan hence the candle not burning the caboose.

I know many are saying bring Lily back, but I hope the writers listen and do bring her back. What's wrong with Ruth discovering her alive. Lily, Cullen, and Elam running the railroad would be interesting.

I think that Bohanan is such a great character...he has the strength of his convictions and follows through with them...I think Lily should have used the ledger for leverage against Durant and his wife and stood up especially to Durant... how appropo that he should call her a whore, so typical of a man when he is caught with his pants down or has a near death experience.

I'm telling you she isn't dead.

What was the significance of the last scene when Bohannan ties the red rag about the post and sticks it in the ground?
answer: means he took the job for the railroad. That was a piece of red material Toole used to use when working on it.
As for the speculation if Lily is dead- come on, she's dead. In my opinion, a big mistake. The Swede will be back, that's for sure. Him dancing in the street, while the town burned ( as well as some people) was really creepy. I like the series, but please, writers- give us something to look forward to for Cullen. His character has been thru too much heartbreak. Oh, and I'm hoping Lily is alive (but I don't think so). You should have killed Ruth the church lady.

We are pretty well done with the show too. Thought the guy playing Bohanon was going to be the star and was featured for a while when he had a goal to find who destroyed his family. Now the show has no lead and this guy turns out to be a jerk. What a mess. Got to find another Dodge city marshall, professiona gambler, another ranching family, or something. This is no true western.

Her hair was definitely messed up after the attack of the indians before Swede choked her.

Have watched this show from the beginning and look forward to its return. Agree that Bohannon & the Swede are the most interesting characters. I have even wondered why "Swede" hasn't gotten some critical recognition for his work in that part. Entertaining show.

Second season was weak and disjointed. Huge mistake to kill off Lily, if she is dead. Did anybody notice that the Swede ressurects,as a Frankenstien-like character? One might go so far as to say is is a sort of perverse Christ-like character, es[pecially when he is strteched out on that table, chained, in a cross-like position! I was fed up with the ending and probably will not watch a third season, IF there is a third season.

Have faith in the show folk's. Killing off Lily make's Bohannan's life totally empty again. The railroad isn't his love....he want's something more personal not hard rail and black smoke. I agree with Donna. Bohannan is telling a story. Maybe he's in PTS and only think's Swede killed Lily. It may have been just me, but remember when Swede strangled Lily, her hair was neatly tucked into that bun. When Bohannan found her, it was all askew and free flowing; especially when he carried her to the church. As for the Swede...........pure evil can't die that easily. Bohannon is going to have to cut his head off to really kill him.

It means he was going forward with the future and accepted the job to continue the tracks.

Hate to admit but I don't understand the significance of the last scene..Bohannan on the tracks over the bridge and putting the stake with the red bandana in the ground.

Lilly dead??? What a stupid move. She was one of the only characters I found interesting, and could act. Bohannon mumbles all the way through and does he ever speak more than six words in a sentence??? what a mistake. I won't be watching next season. And Ruth and Sean.....big yawn there too.

The finale wasn't bad, but killing off Lily was a bad move. Lily is dead, Swede is presumably dead, Durant is in jail. That really only leaves 2 of the 5 main characters (Cullen and Elam). If Hell on Wheels gets renewed its hard to imagine where they could go with the series. The ending made it seem like a series finale any how.

One thing that did confuse me is after the Swede strangled Lily he tipped over a candle but the place never burnt down...

2 things.
1) I love Lilly but it was definitely her fault she got killed. "He is more useful to me alive then dangerous to you." I think that was the line that spoke her demise when she insisted the Swede be released.
2) Now Bohanan will have a reason to take over the railroad. A tribute to her and what she worked so hard to make happen.
and just as a throw in I can't stand Ruth or her idiot stalker.

Lily and the Swede are NOT dead.. and anyway, what is SO terrible about drastic twists? Who knows what they have in store for the follow up... so for crying out loud, until the book is fully closed on Lily, stop complaining!! This show is awesome and far better than just about everything else on the idiot tube these days or in recent years for that matter. Really looking forward to the next season!!!

I can't believe the writers would KILL OFF LILY!!! I don't believe it. I agree with those that say she is in a coma. Season 3 will be about her very long road back to health and all that comes with it.

Killing Lily off was a HUGE mistake! And to end it like that leaving the viewers with nothing to look forward to was really stupid on the writers' part... There's NO way I will be watching next season- if there is even going to be a next season- and at this point, I don't really care anymore. So thanks for stealing all the joy away! I will be watching for Domonique (Lily) to be cast on another show where she WON'T be killed off by idiotic writing!
