Pretty Little Liars Review: Masked Strangers on a Train

by at . Comments

After a loooong wait, Pretty Little Liars returned with an extra spooky Halloween episode.

There were so many frightening, action-filled moments that I felt like "This Is a Dark Ride" was even more exciting than this summer's finale. It definitely racheted up the anticipation for the new season. The premise, a Halloween party train, offered many opportunities for masked villains to easily make their way to our titular liars, with deadly consequences.

*Sigh* If only all the episodes could be like this. Oh, well. On to the show because there's lots to cover!

Halloween on Pretty Little Liars

The Halloween episode delivered a little bit of updating on current events in Rosewood. Caleb has recovered from his gunshot wound, though it's still unclear how he got shot. It did sound like maybe he accidentally did it to himself. Garrett is free, but hasn't yet told Spencer everything he knows. He definitely plans on it; Spencer just needs to be alone first. Garrett gets his chance on the Halloween Train, along with every other A-suspect.

So who do we think was responsible for all that mayhem?

Mona was definitely on the train, making us wonder just how easy it is to escape from that mental hospital or who exactly is helping her out. Her paper mache mask/face was extremely creepy, to say the least. Toby accompanied Spencer, but was conspicuously absent during most of the search for Aria. Lucas had an odd moment with a suddenly back in town Jason before both disappeared. Noel and Jenna were there to annoy the liars with their pranks and insults. Paige was also present as Emily's stylish date (good thing for Spencer!).

We know Toby and Mona are part of the A team, but what about the others? Actually of all the suspects, I was most convinced that the one person who wasn't on the train was the guiltiest. Ezra conveniently couldn't make it to the party because of job interview. But he gave a lot of meaningful looks towards Aria and her costume, and then he magically appeared at the end of the episode to comfort his almost-murdered girlfriend. I just don't trust Ezra.

And what do you make of Garrett's confession? He claims that he only let Jenna think that he killed Ali, and when he returned later, he saw Ali talking to Byron. Was he telling the truth? Did A just get him released so he could be killed? I tend to think that anyone who is murdered by A knows the real story behind Ali's death and the weird surveillance of random girls. Poor Garrett just didn't get out of town soon enough.

So, I think maybe Aria's father was somehow involved with Ali, but he was probably only being blackmailed by the little secret-hoarder.

The episode had plenty of scares - from Aria's private time with Garrett's body to Spencer's fight with a cross-dressing masked A - but the biggest creepy moment came at the end when the drink carrier was toppled over revealing that the ice was covering up Ali's body the whole time. GROSS!

The train wasn't the only place with scary events. Ashley encountered a very frightened and very cold little girl at her home; but every time she tried to show the girl to Pastor Ted, she disappeared. The girl said she wanted to call her mom, but her mom just got upset. She also talked about her sister who likes to lie and fight a lot. Was she a ghost? And who's her sister?

Could the show be referencing the twin story from last Halloween episode? Or is this another nod to the "Ali has a twin" theory?

Regardless, the show definitely left us scratching our heads when that hand emerged from the dirt. Was that flashback to the night Ali was murdered?

I guess we'll have to wait until the winter premiere.

Nothing about the arm that came out of the ground? I would have thought that would have been a topic of discussion. Unless that scene was a flashback to the night that Ali was murdered and it was her arm sticking out.

@kat paige is probably sad that yet again, her girlfriend's friends are always there interrupting their alone time together.....? theory here. i say its too obvious for her to apart of A, it would become a stilton if so. she just doesn't like the others and wants ems to be safe.....
the ghost story theory is also believable because ghosts can manifest into a time they felt comfortable in (GW reference) another theory here....

i may be one of the only one who was bored during the episode...however i did feel it to warrant a 4 star on base of the ending. i liked the twist of garret's body being dead throughout the train scenes which makes me question whether spencer did really talk to him THEN or was this a flashback...
The re-appearance of the out of town characters maybe to let us know that A can be anyone we least suspect.
The ezra aspect i do see, but he seems to dim to pull that off imo. byron, i see blackmail more than relationship. probably ally fancied him but he rejected her advances...
who mona was speaking to...good question but remember all isn't as it seems so it could be her imagination.

Ezra is so in the A-team.. I'm 99% sure he is in it..
Also, did you guys notice how weird Paige sounded when she said "my pleasure" to spencer?
I have a feeling that she is on the A team as well. And if she's on the A team, that only leaves Caleb as the only good partner of our liars. Therefore I think all the boyfriends (and Paige) are on the A-teAm.. Man this is so intense!!!!

The little girl was one of the twins from last halloweens episode. I knew ever since the earring thing Ali was fooling around with byron but I doubt he killed her. The time line of events really annoyed me bc aria was missing before Spencer talked to garret and then when we see garrets body his lips were blue like he'd been dead for awhile found it odd. Definitely don't know what to make of Ezra. Could be a red herring. Overall great episode. Especially for a filler. More happened and was found out than in even the halves of seasons all together.

Liked this ep. Byron? What the hell he was doing there? I suspect him.
Adam is a vampire, probably he visited the Mystic Falls first.
Goodbye Garrett,I miss you!

cont... If you look back at the first eps of S1 & 2 Spencer is already awake when the other girls wake up to discover Ali/Emily missing. Very suspicious!!! I love Spencer but she's definitely high on my suspect list now! Cant wait for the rest of the story to unfold!

I have a new suspect for everyone to consider.....I don't think Toby was the 'A' with Mona at the beginning of the episode I think it was Spencer. Later in the ep just before she is grabbed by Garret she is humming "Teddy Bears Picnic" the same tune Mona was singing at the start. What if the scene with Garrett's confession to Spencer didn't actually happen at all, what if we're just seeing what Spencer wanted us to see...the story she was going to tell the other girls. After all this is the Halloween episode where we're witnessing things that aren't necessarily real, like the ghost. In the Pretty Dirty Secret teasers there was a body being kept on ice....Ali would be bones by now so why would she need to be kept on ice....Garrett looked pretty blue & frozen to me. Also how could Garrett have gone from talking to Spencer & then all of a sudden be dead in the box with Aria? If you look back at the first eps of S1 & 2 Spencer is already awake when the other girls wake up to discover Ali/Emily missing. Very suspicious!!! I love Spencer but she's definitely high on my suspect list now! Cant wait for the rest of the story to unfold!

Loved the episode!! I don't think the ghost girl is Ali's twin she looks way to young. Did anyone else have a hard time watching Toby and Spencer together after what we found out about Toby?? I did it was very hard. I just wanted to scream get away from him Spencer he's on the A Team!!! I'm suspicious of Ezra now and Bryon. Poor Aria!! =[ I had a thought, does anyone remember the flash back of when Aria and Ali were in Bryon's office and thrashed and Ali found the earring. Well what the earring was Ali's and she was fooling around with Bryon and she got pissed at him for fooling around with Merideth. That's just my theory. Any clue as to who but Ali's body on the ice table thing? Maybe Mona?
