The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "Memorial"

at . Comments

We said hello (to one hunter) and goodbye (to another) on this week's outstanding Vampire Diaries episode.

Now, in the latest edition of the TV Fanatic Round Table, senior staff members Matt Richenthal, Eric Hochberger and Steve Marsi break down "Memorial," paying tribute to all who have departed the series and naming our Hero of the Week...

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: I could go on and on about the concluding few moments, but I'll simply link to this Vampire Diaries quote and warn readers: grab a Kleenex.

Eric: I was a sucker for Matt Davis' small cameo as the show's ultimate bromance, Dalaric, enjoed a reunion. Alaric is the only ghost I'll ever forgive for an appearance on this show. And he'll probably get a tear out of me every time.

Steve: The memorial service, with various characters literally in the crosshairs and absolutely no clue how it would play out. The tension was ridiculously palpable.

Vampire Diaries RT - depreciated -

React to the introduction of Connor.
Matt: I was shocked: an African-American character who is NOT a witch?!? Actually, maybe it's too soon to make such a statement. But seriously, folks, I'm all in on Connor. His appearance raises numerous questions, from his connection to the Council to what the heck this quasi-tattooed guy actually is.

Eric: Meh. Dude has got to get some better weapons. You can draw all the cool icons you want on your bullets and wear the most stylish vervain gloves, but if they can't take down Tyler or Damon, what shot do you have? Guy has to kill at least one vampire before I even see a threat.

Steve: He didn't waste any time, did he? Connor may not have claimed any vampire lives, but he established himself as a force of nature. Of what nature, I can't even say. With the mystery ink only Jer sees and his emergence out of nowhere, he's as cloaked in mystery as he is dangerous. One suggestion, though: Go in for the bro-hug or the friendly back slap instead of the handshake, man. Less formal and likely more effective.

Would you be angry if your girlfriend drank from the blood of your brother?
Matt: Well... is she a vampire? Because, if not, I'd be more grossed out than angry. The relationship would be over faster than Klaus' 40-year dash time.

Eric: Definitely. You know, once I get over the fact she never admitted she was a vampire to me. Man, so many things are beginning to make sense now. Never going out in the sun. Her heightened emotions. Leaving empty blood bags around the house. Oh, anyways, yeah, totally jealous. Blood drinking is the worst form of cheating I can think of. And with my own brother?!?

Steve: You know, it's funny, I always wanted a brother growing up... until last night made me glad I don't have to worry about this sort of thing. Thanks, mom and dad!

More heroic this week: Matt, Tyler or Caroline?
Matt: Tyler. Taking a bullet will always win out over letting a hot girl suck on your neck and simply telling your BFF to take a chill pill in order to embrace her compelling new nature.

Eric: Please, Tyler had nothing to fear after taking way more bullets from Connor the first round. Matt gets no hero points now that I've learned how sexual it is to give your blood. Slut. The real hero this week? Caroline in her fight against Lyme disease and other Tick-borne illnesses.

Steve: Gotta give it to Matt for taking Stefan's advice to heart. Instead of moping around serving drinks and being useless, he "earned" his second chance at life by usefully serving Elena the most important drink she's ever had. Points for courage and execution - how he didn't writhe in pain and blow his cover is beyond me.

Which of the mourned characters do you miss the most?
Matt: Lexie. And not just because she was cool and fun and hot. But because her departure from TVD eventually led to her appearance on 90210, which is just depressing. That show is terrible.

Eric: I think this question was meant to read how much do you miss Alaric? On a scale of 1-10? 11. But, come on, did anyone else completely forget so many of those characters even existed until the list was read? Totes forgot the boys even had an uncle at the start.  Meanwhile, my lanterns are still on order from Amazon...

Steve: Were the words "besides Alaric" supposed to be inserted into this question? Is it even a question after that cameo? What I will say is that I enjoyed the reminder of how many key family members and friends the show has actually dispatched over three-plus seasons. The "wow, that's right" response to that scene made their mournfulness even more authentic. I'm also a sucker for those lanterns ever since we performed a similar ritual here at TVF for our favorite canceled shows last spring. RIP Secret Circle. RIP.

How could Elena not mention her biological father John! He gave his life up for her. Once again TVD writers make more mistakes.

Esta muy buena la 4 temporada

1.The best scene was the memorial service. Very intense. 2.Connor is badass, I like him. Wish he would've killed Damon. 3.Yes. Elena picked Stefan so she needs to stop running behind his back to Damon everytime she has a problem. 4.Matt was the heroic one. And he does NOT need to redeem himself because he did nothing wrong. Elena's life is no more valuable than his. 5.I don't miss anyone. Also, very happy there were no Originals in this episode. Wonder if I can get an episode with no Elena, Stefan nor Damon. That'd be awesome!

1. Tie between the Memorial Service and the Lantern Scene
2. I hated Connor for what he did to April, kinda defeats the whole purpose of vamp hunting, but Im curious abt his tattoos
3. IM GAY!
4. Well Tyler was the heroic one (even though I dont like him), Caroline was great!
5. ALARIC (more than I thought!) + maybe Anna

/5 Anna , OMG I couldn't even breathe when I hear Jeremy saying her name. I liked her so much and just the thought of how she died *FEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLS*

5/ Alaric Saltzman for sure. It's unbelievable how only bringing his name makes me feel sad all over again. I loved his scene with Damon it was so emotional, I couldn't stop crying.

3/ Yes, I can understand his anger it's feels really bad to see your girlfriend trusting your brother over you, getting closer to him day after day and sharing blood with him (this "kind of a personal thing")but who can blames her specially after the way Stefan was acting ( so delusional and denial to the truth) so yes Damon is the better person to turn for help (hopefully more than help)specially that as she said before "they have something understanding" plus Damon is more experienced, smart and have great plans. Just saying.!!!
4/ I believe that if not for these 3, things would have ended badly but I'd say Matt& Tyler equally. I think Matt & tyler risked there lives at some point for their friends sake and if they didn't do what they did I think that they would be all exposed. Still Caroline has done a great job, she helped Elena and without her Elena would've been now suffering a great guilt for killing the girl that she used to babysit.

1/ If I have to choose than Damon's scenes. I love his every gaze, move and word and I'm loving him more and more with every episode :)
2/ I hate him he's heartless and creepy. 1st he almost killed April just so he will kill the vampires. Why didn't he just use another blood source instead of using an innocent girl. Then we see his invisible tattoo (I saw in a tumblr a photo where they put his tattoo and Jeremy's promotional photo and it was the same. what does that mean?)

Miranda wicker

1. All of them? Seriously. Start to finish. But probably the scene in the church where the vampires were all communicating unbeknownst to those around them. Or Damon in the graveyard talking to Alaric. 2. I said it in the comments on the review. Connor is a BAMF. Klaus as a villain was always lame because he's so damned whiney. Connor's a villain I can sink my teeth into. (Vampire joke! I slay me.) 3. In the context of a love triangle, sure, because that scene was somehow hotter than the wood "sex" scene, you know, what with the abrupt barfing of blood and all. (Did anyone else think Elena had gotten motion sick from all the fast moving?) 4. Matt AND Tyler. I really can't pick the bigger hero between the two of them. Slowly, Matt's becoming a character with a story beyond "woe is me." 5. Caroline's dad because I love Jack Coleman. Or Grams because poor lonely Bonnie.

I still don't quite get what's the real significance behind letting someone feed on your blood. (ex:Elena/Damon) Does the "personal thing" only happen between vampires or is it just Delena.
Mikael used to feed on vampire blood is there a meaning?
Sometimes to save others they feed them vampire blood too

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 2 Quotes

Damon: You know what they are? Children. Like lighting a candle's going to make everything OK, or even saying a prayer. Or pretending Elena's not going to end up just like the rest of us murdering vampires. Stupid, delusional, exasperating little children. And I know what you're going to say: 'It makes them feel better, Damon.' So what? For how long? A minute, a day? What difference does it make? Because in the end, when you lose somebody, every candle, every prayer is not going to make up for the fact that the only thing you have left is hole in your life where that somebody that you cared about used to be. And a rock with a birthday carved into it that I'm pretty sure is wrong. So thanks, friend. Thanks for leaving me here to babysit. Because I should be long gone by now. I didn't get the girl, remember? I'm just stuck here fighting my brother and taking care of the kids. You owe me big.
Alaric: I miss you too, buddy.

You better hope she's not a fan of Bambi.
