Hawaii Five-0 Review: Halloween Do Over

at . Comments

The delayed broadcasting of a Halloween-themed episode has the potential of being just like that coworker who shows up wearing a Santa hat in January: it's awkward.

Thankfully, this was not the case here, as Hawaii Five-0 learned something from last year’s less than stellar Halloween offering and aired an installment that took place around Halloween, but didn't use the holiday itself as a scary point. For that, they had the creepiest grandson and grandmother relationship. Ever

McGarrett's Halloween Investigation

Seriously, am I the only one who was more creeped out by the relationship of Seth and his grandmother than the killings of Seth?!? Helen went from sweet, sleepy, old woman to cop-shooting-psychopath in the space of time it takes to finish a cup of tea.

Which actually lead to my biggest disappointment: we did not learn anything about why Seth was performing the ritual murders or why his grandmother was willing to kill herself instead of turning him in. There was such potential for it in the scene where Seth came home and Helen was sipping tea over the body of Lucas. All we needed was a little dialog giving us “the big reveal” of why he was doing it all.

Sadly, nothing. Okay, Helen gave us "clean up your mess." But I’m not really counting that.

Then, on the other hand, Steve shooting Seth without shouting "stop" or "hold it right there" worked well as a climatic ending to the story. However, given how many knuckleheads Five-0 chases on foot, it seems unlikely he wouldn't have given any sort of warning before shooting his creepy ass.

As for the brief nod to the holiday in question, it's always a bonus when we get to see Grace, who I swear has doubled in size since last Halloween. Then we had Catherine and Steve watching Child’s Play while trying to make out on the couch. This scene alone earned big points because we so very rarely get to witness the team “at play. Seeing Steve act like he's in high school is always fun.

In conclusion, the episode earns four "spin the bottles" for a good nod to Halloween, but it fell a little short on insight into the motives of the villains.

What did you think? Did Grace make the cutest bee ever? Should Danny just give up on Halloween?

lastnights episode was great!! the way steve was working on impressing a large group of girls to earn their first aid badge!! what a major eye opener for everyone!!kono &adam days as a super couple are numbered little brother Michael is up to his old tricks !!! &chin is keeping a vigilant sharp eye on his cousin kono!!yes chin is absolutely right!!going to jail for murder & now you want to knockoff big brother adam!! so ultra uncool for anewly released jailbird frequent repeat offenders never learn their lessons!!! kudos to the girlscouts &their leader &danno &the five-o team for catching diamond thieves!!! waytogo!!! great job to all!!!

An average episode. Not enough Chin and Kono. Not enough interaction between the 4 main characters. Everyone celebrates Halloween except Chin and Kono : If someone can explain to me why (okay Chin is still in mourning, but Kono) Really sad to see how Kono and Catherine are used in the show ... Kono is almost nonexistent. Catherine is a sexual object when she's not family counselor. But where's the magic of the first season ... The worst is that I can not hate this show :) Sorry for my bad english

Just re-watched this episode and definitely better the second time around (maybe it's because I had my eyes closed for most of it the first time around) hehe. Loved the cat in the dumpster scene with Kono. Missed that the first time. Steve and Catherine are so cute together. Catherine was so sweet with Monkey. Loved her suggestion to Monkey to make the most of Danno and their time together. The spooky house was hysterical with Danno freaked out by possible ghosts and pigeons. The scary, creepy, spooky stuff was still too scary for me to actually watch. Enjoyed the team interactions. Lee Meriwether was really convincing as a psychotic grandmother.."tired of cleaning up your messes.....and then in the same breath...put the ice cream in the freezer before it melts"?!? Enjoyed the episode. And as always, Steve is smokin' hot ; )

Not the worst epi and not the best. I will admit to having my brain turn to mush watching Steve caress Cath's arm and leg during the makeout scene. I love Cath and would like to see her put to better use other than as a babysitter for mommy dearest and for Gracie, who's turning into the most adorable 'tween ever! The plot was a little gory, with not much substance or believability. I think had we known the whys and hows of Granny/Seth it would have been better. What was truly lacking was Chin and Kono. I hope they start using them more. The ending was perfect! I just love that new modern family!!!

I like Hawii 5-O, Dano still gets on my last nerve with the chatter. I like when all the cast help solve the death. Cute holloween action. Why can't Danno spend time with Grace without butting in on Steve? Daddy has issues?

jschoi, LOVED Grace in her role(s) in BSG!!

Mrs. alex o'loughlin, I think Chin got a new haircut :) He did look different, and very handsome, I thought!

Zia, I totally agree with everything you said! :)

Best ending ever! I laughed so hard when Danny snuggled up to Steve! Too funny! I am totally jealous of Michelle Borth that is my dream role! LOL
This was a great episode. It had a Dexter feel to it, Seth would have been someone Dexter would have tracked all season and then killed! He was super creepy!
I like how they have Catherine worked in to the show it is not forced.
Chin looked super different to me...can not quite place what it was though.

i thought this was a good ep, not one of my favorites but not bad. I don't think Grace Park is being phased out, just going to be more of some and less of some in each ep. Sometime this month Daniel Henney will be on as Adam's brother and we should have a good Kono/Adam ep. I hope the ratings get better and this show is on for many more years. As a reference I watched every ep BSG on my summer vacation and some eps no Grace and in others there were more than you con count. H50 could take a lesson from BSG on moving seamlessly between storie lines in an ep.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Episode 5 Quotes

True fact, nothing good has ever happened in an alley after midnight.

Catherine: I'm not sure what sadder, that you use to use this lame movie to hook up with girls, or that it use to work.
Steve: I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about.
