RED JOHN'S NOTE TO JANE IN THE PILOT - Dear Mister Jane, I don't like to be SLANDERED in the media, espically by a dirty money grubbing fraud. If you were a real psychic, instead of a dishonest little worm, you wouldn't need to open the door to see what I've done to your lovely wife and child.

some great thoughts and theories. really enjoy all the good brains being brought to bear around my favorite show. doesn't kirkland look like voldemort with a nose?

@Guessing. Your ideas about Stiles and Visualize are really intriguing because it reminds me that Visualize makes everybody do those confession tapes, I forget what they call them. If RJ went through Viz, his confession tapes must be doozies! And Stiles tells Jane that time on the park bench, before he gives Jane Rosalind's address, about how he knows way more than even Jane OR RJ have any idea. Stiles left the country right after that. Unavailable for interview, and what a valuable witness he would be, knowing everything about RJ for as long as he was at Viz. I would think RJ would really want to bump Stiles off, if your theory is correct.

@rationalgal.....thanks for the recap of the deleted scene. Can't remember if Rosland had blood on her hands or not when they discovered the morgue guy, but I did think it was VERY strange that she would not have any knowledge of him being in her closet. Wish they would have explored that more.

After watching the Canadian promo for next week, I am beginning to think Kirkland is Red John with Volker part of his close inner circle. (They are somehow closely involved with each other.) I kind of also think that maybe Red John found most of his followers at Visualize. He learned from Stiles techniques and then went and formed his own "organization". Stiles seems to know too much about Red John. He may not know personally who he is, but I bet he knows how he is able to convince people to do his bidding. It is fun to try and figure out where the writers are going.

@entwife, I believe it is Lorelei. On the Canadian promo, you see her with blond hair, not to mention a lot of diff

Forgot that reference to Volker's stutter. So now I'm rethinking Jane's deleted-scene profile of RJ and Timothy Carter fits somewhat better. Since Jane's profiling, Carter got married and overcame his speech impediment (it WAS small). His house is now two-story and white, but it does have a very obvious blue door. He is something of a small-business man, which could be close enough to the "clerical" job category. His hair is brown, and short and straight enough to match Rosalind's description, and he was also tall enough. Jane and Lisbon remarked on how clean and tidy the house was. As "psychic" readings go, it's pretty close. So did Rosalind lie when she said Carter was not Roy Tagliaferro? But he's dead, which makes him just another RJ minion of which there may be "many" as hinted by that partial message in blood a few episodes back. It's a great mystery and fun to try to puzzle out.

Hmmmmmmm. Rewatched. Volker comments in the scene at the airplane hanger that he and Cassie talked about how they both had overcome stutters growing up.

In the previews for next week, who is the woman kicking the stuffing out of Jane? Lorelei with bleached hair?

mrc678: I reviewed the end of the episode. Are you talking about the picture on the wall?

And events in othe episodes mean something, everything does. Hypnosis plays a role,i.e Rigsby episode, so innocent people maybe doing the killing, (RJ maybe a seriel killer created under hynosis), and Jane drinking tainted tea causing dellusions about his daughter means things may not be what they appear so everything is in play. Red John is someone none of us possibly think is he or she, and perhaps Jane's original evaluation of Red John irritated RJ becuase Jane was absolutely wrong in the profile, but Brett Stiles did say to Jane that RJ may be jealous of jane, a form of love, I think that statement will be very important, but i also saw some interesting things in the episode with lisbon faking a breakdown, entrapping the killer doctor. Perhaps the name red john is a version of a sports reference. But I need to see more to make a more educated evaluation on that.

  9. mrc678

My previous comment was cut short. Red john has controlled every outcome, like a game of chess. Kirkland and Homeland are not RJ, neither fit the pattern. The simpliest truth is I am dissappointed because the detective skills used in non-red john episodes are not used in Red john episodes. Its TV of course, but, we have answers and leads to clearly follow. The sheriff jane killed his father was Red John's friend, Bret Stiles lead jane to a red john captive, the blind girlfriend. FBI agent O'laughlin who is a former football player, and highly educated and of course Loreli. All the dead red john followers. How about the backround investigations on all them, fingerprints, checking any similarities or connections, not one episode about that, perhaps on purpose? The thing from the last episode of any matter is the last scene with Jane and homeland guy, above there head is a clear picture, a clue that matters!

Red John will probably be the least suspect. The profile that @rationalgal outlines (and thanks!) sounds like a serial killer -- Volker doesn't (like the Gormogon killer and the previous Gormogon killer in the old folks home seemed like serial killers without being the Zack-like stereotype whereas Volker is the stereotype of the cold-blooded, me-first businessman, which really is more of a straw man idea than you can find anyone exactly like Volker -- really, business can't succeed if people can't trust each other, like think of what people thought of snake oil salesmen, but there are a lot of the stereotype in movies, like "Wall Street" etc, which could be all Volker is??). But then again ... they're not required to pick someone who fits a stereotype, so who knows??

I checked out Jane's profiling of RJ in the deleted scene from the pilot. It was only marginally accurate. Basically useless. Timothy Carter did not come close enough to fit it. Also I checked Rosalind's description of RJ and it did not match the deleted scene either. Rosalind is the one sure connection to RJ the writers have given us. The teacups she used in the episode where Jane had to shoot Dumar (his only link to RJ) were the same as shown in the part of that episode that showed RJ was videotaping Jane and Dumar. And didn't Rosalind have blood on her hands when the morgue attendant was found murdered in her closet? Definitely a connection there. The plot thickens.

Re guessing's comment about Jane profiling RJ in a deleted scene on a DVD. I have that DVD and the deleted scene is taken from Jane's TV interview that led to RJ killing his family. Jane describes RJ as an egomaniac who is very ordinary looking, in his mid-30s, medium height, thinning brown hair, orderlin and tidy, very clean, has a small speech impediment that he is deeply ashamed of, works at a clercal job and lives with his mother or possibly his sister, in a blue house with a citrus tree in front yard-could be a lemon tree.
Well, no surprise that that was deleted. But if a character shows up meeting that description, Jane should punce on him right away. Hmmmm. How close did Timothy Carter come to meeting it? I'll go back and check on his house and see if there's a lemon tree in front.

What a fun and entertaining episode despite all the darkness. How did they do that! The news anchor and the weather lady are my favorite guest stars. Jane gossiping with the weather lady is hilarious.

They showed Volker watching Brenda being killed, he had a smile/a sense of satisfaction on his face. I am convinced that he is friendly with RJ and must have watched a few RJ murders as well. One thing i found strange is that Jane never really met Volker in the entire episode :s this makes me more suspicious. The homeland security guy is definitely someone important in the storyline and most probably can be RJ...but why would he warn Lisbon?

  15. Entwife

(cont'd) the climax of circumstances that would draw RJ out will be explosive! I'm looking forward to a terrific storyline.

  16. Entwife

I don't think Volker is Red John because of the way he openly flaunts his power, his personality just seems wrong for the clandestine drives of RJ. He's brash and arrogant because of his money and power, just covers himself to keep from getting caught. Red John seems to value his own skill and indetectibility almost above his appetites. RJ takes operating like vapor almost to artistry, he wouldn't compromise it for show, and that IS his show. For the same reason, it's really hard to say it's Kirkland either, although he wins by a mile for creepiness. RJ showing himself in a public setting to threaten Lisbon. I just can't see it. It would be done very privately, as RJ did with Jane when he trapped him with those video makers, and he murdered them first before showing himself to Jane. But Kirkland as RJ is soooooo enticing, especially bumping into Jane that way. If Kirkland is RJ (and I would choose him over Volker for sure) the climax of circumstances that would draw him out will be ex

Again, Bruno Heller is treating everyone watching like the CBI team tracking red john, but Bruno is red john and we play the role of CBI. All this conjecture is like leading the witness, the pied piper syndrome. This episode is a red herring. Everything has a reason, and from the beginning every episode has a pattern. I want to make this concise, every red john episode, the additional storyline in that episode parrells the actual truth about what is happening with red john. Every episode the backround leaves us clues, remember the lottery murder, rewatch the episode and clues were left the murder was because of the lottery winnings.

The basic truth of the entire show is Jane is a victim, not a detective, as boscoe said to him, and its about how one deals with great loss moving forward in life Red John did not kill him, and why he or she didnt kill him, or why he or she won't, is why red john does what he does in all episodes because Red John has reason for everything and controls t

I agree also, this isnt 1st time Lisbon is being targeted at all. Red John's accomplices have tried to kill her twice(Jane shot the cop at the end of season 1 who would have, O'Laughlin at the end of season 3 just missed killing her). And the writers have done a really good job integrating her desire for revenge and the Red John theme. Theres no question theyve made this Volker guy look like serious trouble. How much bigger could it get than" you have no idea whats going on. Enjoy your job while you still have it"?? WOW. And then the Homeland Agent who is as sketchy as they comes warns Lisbon. Things are getting serious now. In the promos the Homeland guy takes a central part in investigating Jane-Lorelei escape, and you just know he's behind some trouble. HUGE episode next week.

I thought the ratings were pretty good
10 million viewers highest non football program on Sun
    Higher then its leadin program
I do not understand the 18-49 thing but it was lower then other programs

  20. SMD

I read that CBI officer Ron is Red John.... The character is portrayed by the actor John Troy Donovan.

Been thinking and reading other opinions on Volker vs Kirkland. Someone said on another site, that there was a deleted scene where Jane profiles Red John on the season 1 DVD. I don't own the DVD's but if they are correct, the profile fits Kirkland slightly more then Volker. Maybe, Kirkland IS Red John with Volker as his money man/partner in crime. Both are very good canidates for the mastermind known as Red John. Bottom line, it may be Volker, Kirkland or none of the above being Red John. LOL All I know is that this season has been the best and most entertaining for me. Hope the ratings improve and we get another season.

BTW, I agree with who ever said that Lisbon was in danger. I think Red John will go after her this season

I would run from Cho too! I f I saw Tim Kang on the street I'D be scared to asked him for an autograph! He would probably slam you to the ground and then say with a poker face... YOU GOT A PEN!

  23. anitraward1

It was a fun and interesting episode.I smell danger ahead for Lisbon! The FBI Agent, Homeland Security and Volker? What is going on with her? All 3 of these people are suspicious. The writer's are cooking up something and it's way to early to tell. I do hope that Lisbon takes down volker real hard. She may end up killing him and you can best believe Jane will hand his hands on this one.

Best part of the show for me was Jane and the electric fence. It's the federal pen Jane, not a play pen! What was he thinking! Very funny!

I will say this; with everything the writer's are doing, I know we won't be disappointed. They can drag Red John out for the next 5 years as far as I'm concerned. It's been a fun ride so far!

Mrs Morgan, I like your theory.

I find it's unfair to compare Lison to Jane. When I said she has good instincts, I didn't mean she could never be wrong, after all she is not a mentalist. But she is pretty smart though. When they asked her to pick someone in the San Joaquin's case, she had to pick from the suspects she was given. And still she picked the creepiest (the pedophile who photographed young girls). So yeah, I still think she is underrated.

I think Red John is or will be under our noses, but Volker? He doesn't fit the profile. He doesn't do the killing himself, and while he doesn't have any problem killing someone when he's got a motive (hide a secret, eliminate a threat) I don't see him as a serial killer...
