John Troy Donovan is Red John!!!!!

Thinking more about it, I can definitely see your point about him not wanting to make ties back to himself. I also am seeing that Volker could definitely be influential enough to be RJ. He had enough loyalty from Ed Hunt to convince him to tamper with a car, not too far of a stretch to say he could get loyalty from Limo Man and others... I'm now torn between Volker and "Bob Kirkland"...

Can we have more episodes like this rather than too many COTW and tired RJ. Volker and Kirkland are creepy. Ed and Tara were hilarious. Jane took Ed's glasses the first time? Jane trying to break into federal prison was funny. Jane's "Damn it" was funny too.

Whoever Red John is, he has to be wealthy, powerful and influential to be able to control people and organizations as he has. No lesser person could possible do the things RJ has done. Also, there is no reason why RJ has to do the killing himself, just orchestrate it. I'm still holding out for Timothy Carter being the RJ minion who killed Jane's family on orders from RJ, possibly with RJ there looking on (ala Volker in this episode). Why not? Allowing Carter to be the actual killer of Jane's family could give Jane enough sense of achieving revenge that he could then just focus on taking down the entire RJ operation. Possibly that is what the FBI is planning/hoping Jane can do. It would make a great ending.

Volker is a classic red herring- too smarmy and smug to be RJ, though targeting Lisbon would be definitely an RJ move. More likely the homeland creep is the one.

well...tht was an exciting episode...At last we got a sight of Red john...definitely creepy....it was totally him..the man who came to visit teresa...HUGEEEE...waiting for their reaction when they will come to know tht he was none other han Red John..!!

  7. Guessing

I believe the reason Volker (who I think is Red John) didn't whack off these people himself is because the journalist had evidence on him being already being a killer (of the tribe) and to kill in the Red John MO/personality would reveal his true identity, so he had someone else to his bidding, which Red John is also known for doing.

Whatever, the truth is.............I do think Red John will be revealed this season.

The Homeland Security guy is definitely the same guy who was in the back of the limo in the flashback episode with the FBI director. I'm thinking he is Red John, and now he's going to interact with everyone without them knowing. I don't think Volker is Red John because to be Red John he would have killed these people himself, wouldn't he? Red John wouldn't contract out and settle for watching... I do, however, think he and Volker are 'friends' in whatever way that psychopaths can be friends. Maybe they see each other as kindred spirits or something. I'm guessing the capture of Volker will lead to more Red John information and bring them closer to figuring out it's Homeland Security guy.

  9. Guessing

I think Volker is Red John. Why would "Bob" Kirkland warn Lisbon to stay away from Volker. At this point we have an idea of Bob, being "bad" and KNOW that Volker is indeed a formidable, calculating, powerful man who can influence people to kill. Also Volkers conversation with Lisbon while on the steps, he off handily threaten her and said that she didn't really know what was going on. If Volker doesn't show up within the next few shows then I am sure he is Red John. Not having Jane interact with him has to "mean something" and what better way then to throw people off the scent then to dangle a red john associate, aka Limo guy as possibly being red john and to reveal the real red john under our noses without any one thinking twice.

Continued from previous posting: Will she and Jane begin working together to trap what may be their common nemesis - Volker/Red John? Just wondering.

  11. rationalgal

I have now scrapped my previous guesses re Red John. Volker is a very promising candidate: Lots of money, power, influence, doesn't do his own killing. Seems the FBI may have been looking for ways to convict Volker of something. Probably know he is "Red John." Does he get people to kill for him as a loyalty test in exchange for a better lifestyle? Didn't RJ require the same thing of Jane? The RJ killings before Jane's family were random. Were they loyalty tests? Killing Jane's family changed things and the killings became purposful. Did the FBI see Jane's mentalist abilities as useful in trapping Volker/RJ, who is also a con artist, and get him into CBI from the mental hospital so he would have a law enforcement platform to act from. They have been watching him ever since. Waiting for the opportunity for Jane to out-con Volker? Just wondering. Also, Lisbon seems more hardened and focused now. The playful aspects of her character aren't there any more. Will she and Jane begin working to

remember the san joaquin killer episode where jane told lisbon to trust her instincts? she picked the wrong guy. last night, lisbon was forced to go off on her own, picked the right guy but got that girl killed. lisbon knew she needed jane's help. jane wouldn't have needed the girl to compromise herself in order to, at the very least, wipe that smile off volker's face. (volker couldn't threaten jane about his job since he doesn't give a rat's winkle.) that, along with brenda dissing lisbon by not letting her do the kidnapped couple interview; lisbon's anger problems in episode one; and the rogue's gallery of poker players she joined, all point to a major crap storm in her future. she's spooked and feels like a failure. hope the writers pull together all the seeds they've sown: the fbi crew, back of limo homeland guy, bertram, et al. simon wonderful and beautiful. no one does comedy like him. next week, simon directs. always good.

Bruno Heller said in an interview that this season we will have all the clues to find out who is RJ and I am convinced that he's is the man who greets Jane in the hallway. I am convinced that in the next episode we will know for sure that he is Red John. I liked this episode and I think this is the best season so far. I loved the appearance of Jane on TV.

  14. Fudgefase

A soft episode, mainly to introduce our new baddie - and he has great potential. Hope they write him well and keep the interest going!

  15. Bonnie

what an exciting episode. The new villian is really going to be hard to catch. He just doesn't care or have fear. I thought Jane on air was so cute. I can'twait for next week.

  16. Manboy

E.g. is right, the homeland security guy was the man in the back of the limo (confirmed by Kevin Corrigan's name on the imdb listing for Red Dawn). He definitely isn't Red John. They wouldn't have him stroll into the CBI office like that - it was too low impact. Creepy, but not creepy enough. I don't think Volker is Red John either, but I do think we'll get to Red John later this series. My bet would be on someone we've seen before but not an obvious candidate like Brett Stiles.

  17. E.G.

Don't think it was mentioned, but the homeland security agent that came in to see and 'warn' Lisbon (played by Kevin Corrigan), is the same man that was in the limosine in the "Red Dawn" episode (#5). There is actually no real proof that he is in fact from homeland security. He did flash a badge rather quickly, and Lisbon did not inspect it at all. Whether or Patrick J will review in his mind the statement, by the 'homeland agent': "but I know you."

  18. Mike

Bob Kirkland is Red John. Same guy in the limo and he already knew Jane.

  19. MentalJ

Sloppy writing, sorry. COD would've been strangulation, and noted by the coroner. Also, they would not take down the body before full crime scene photos. Seriously, they need not to insult the viewers' intelligence on basic procedural stuff like this. Makes it hard to enjoy the whole show.

  20. Sanj

Isn't this Bob Kirkland guy the same guy who was in the back of the limo?

Also, I noticed, except for the red John murders, it was the first episode (that I can remember) where the case wasn't closed. And this guy isn't a serial killer, which makes it interesting since he has a professional hired for the murders, which makes it harder to prove.

I was happy that we got a new villain introduced, I like these long-term stories. And I was happy it was centered around Lisbon, after 5 years, it's about time. With Jane closing all the cases, it makes us forget how good a detective Lisbon is. She has good instincts, she knew right away Volker had something to do with the murder. Maybe the introduction of this new villain means we're close to a conclusion to the Red John storyline.

WOW. What a weird episode, I don't mean that in a bad way, just so much to digest and all in such an unusual manner. So get ready for one of the biggest episodes in the entire series next week? The guy in the back of the limo from episode 5 isnt going anywhere; there really pushing this guy as a potential Red John associate(I still refuse to believe he is actually Red John). He is trouble and what I didnt see coming was Lisbon getting so into a case and now this mystery man getting involved with her and telling her to back off. There tying Lisbon into a potential Red John storyline.
