Hawaii Five-0 Review: Armed Gunman Survival Badge

"Huaka'i Kula:" Field Trip

It looks like the Aloha Girls will need to add a few new merit badges to their count in order to cover all of the new skills that Gracie, Lucy and the other girls learned on Hawaii Five-0 this week.

Gracie earned a Burrow Like A Mole Badge as she was able to get out of the shed through a small tunnel she and the other girls dug and unlock the door to let Danny and the others out of the makeshift prison in which Tom Arnold's Ron locked them.

Lucy, on the other hand, earned a combination of badges, starting with my favorite Lucy in the Jungle With Diamonds Badge for managing not to lose any of the diamonds while earning the other badge, Run from Armed Gunman Badge. Technically, Steve earned this badge as well, but since he’s not a real Aloha Girl, I’m disqualifying his entry.

Finally, Riley showed full knowledge and demonstrated her skill to earn the MacGyver Repair Badge for cobbling together several cellphones and getting a signal out to get help. I can’t even make a call from my house half the time. Good Job!

Danny & McGarrett Chaperone

In all seriousness, the entire camping and surviving the gunmen story was a lot of fun. From Lesley Boone as Madeline - the Aloha Girl Leader who knew how to remove a bullet and track prey through the jungle - to Riley explaining (repeatedly) to Danny in more simple terms each time that she could make a phone work, I enjoyed it.

However, I’m with Danny: are there bears in the jungles of Hawaii? I knew large boars were possible, Steve even pointed that out.  But seriously... bears? The answer is no, right?

On the flip side, we had the return of Adam Noshimuri and the introduction to his little brother Michael Noshimuri, who we learned was not as warm and cuddly as his big bro. I’m not sure if there is going to be a changing of the guard in the Noshimuri family or not, but clearly Michael is up to something when he took Kono’s gun and returned it.

I do have to ask, if you’re a cop spending the night at someone else house, do you leave your sidearm on the nightstand?

Somehow, that just seems like a recipe for disaster. I could see it at your own home, maybe. I realize that I have a spot I put my keys, my wallet, hell even my cell phone goes the same place each night. But since I've never carried a side arm as part of my job, I don’t know if you get so casual with it that you just put it on the nightstand any place you go.

Overall, I’m giving the episode a solid 4.3 Aloha Girl merit badges for a fun hour that reminds us why camping is best done in the living room with pizza delivery.

It is insulting when characters have specialized training like Steve knowing how to disarm explosives and then show him standing next to an obvious dope watching a girl climb a tree instead of not using the oportunity to disarm him. Or Steve is chasing C.Thomas Howell's character and only 30 feet from catching him and the guy has time to stop traffic, jack a car and get away and Steve comes too late? PUH'LEASE!
Completely infurating how poor TV writing becomes when the character has to become a moron because it suits the script.

Really enjoyed this one. The camping story was fine and the guest stars were pretty great, I thought. Not enough Chin as per usual.
The secondary Adam Kono story was much more interesting to me. I would like more time devoted to that since we were cheated out of knowing how they even met, etc. I do believe he is trying to change for her and I do think they love each other despite the serious hardships. The bro was creepily hot and dangerous. Setting Kono OR Adam up for soe kind of showdown. Somebody wont live through it I imagine. I just hope both Adam and Kono are OK. I cant figure out if Chin is the only one that knows about their relationship or not. Its not like they are hiding - obviously they are out in public. All in all good episode with good story line potential.

I don't mind light hearted episodes but do they have to portray the guys so useless. Madeline ran strips around Danny who was his usual whiney self with no skills at all. I didn't mind Steve not getting the drop on Ron but letting that other guy catch him so easily was pathetic. Danny just seems to stumble in at the exact right time to save Steve, eventhough they had an hours head start on him. Adam/Kono and Michael were the most interesting thing about the episode. Michael is definitely bad news and seems will skuttle any plans of Adam and Kono being happy. Not sure I like Kono being set up again though.
Chin was awesome as ever and I'm beginning to think he is the best actor on the show but sadly he's used the least.

(con't)Adam will have to make a choice between his girlfriend and his brother and I'm not sure who he will choose. All in all, an all around satisfying episode.

Thanks for the review, Jim. Always look forward to it!
This one WILL make it to my top 10 list for this season, I'm sure! I've been on a few scout camping trips in my day, and I can assure you, nothing anywhere near as exciting happened on them! Steve didn't WANT to hold back with Ron, but he did realize that when there is a small child in the mix, you have to respond with extreme caution to protect the child. He did good. If we didn't get a cargument, we got the next best thing - Danny and Madeline facing off together. What great chemistry between them. Her day job as an ER nurse - oh, please, Show! Bring her back for an encore! Lucy in the tree with diamonds - she needs to be Gracie's new best friend, too! Tom Arnold was scary, and not exactly in a good way - just a little too much eeww-factor for me. I foresee doom and gloom ahead for Adam and Kono, but then again, who doesn't? Michael is bad news...and I expect Adam, if he survives the season, will have to make a choice between his girlfriend or his brother - and I'm not sure which he'll choose! All in all, great episode - 4.5 for my take!

Really fun episode with just about everything you needed. A lot has been said about the minor screen time for Daniel Dae Kim, but you can't pack in three or four storylines in 45 minutes. I think in the little he was on, he portrayed what Chin Ho was feeling about the Kono situation. Make no mistake about it, DDK is the most talented actor of the main cast, and sometimes, it's not how much time you have, it's what you do with it. All-in-all, really loving HFO this season. It doesn't seem as cluttered.

I know a lot of you think Steve being a seal should have taken out Ron sooner, but those of you who want realism.... Would he not be more cautious if he were with a child around. Is that not why police try to negotiate with people when they can, isn't that your reality. If he was by himself, I see him taking him out right now. But, he did what he needed to do to protect someone else. How many kids would you think it would be ok to kill off for the sake of a seal taking down a guy with a gun and stray bullets go flying? It was another good episode. I'm enjoying this season.

Loved this episode. Happy to see each episode get better and better! So much to like...Lucy was outstanding and her expressions were spot on. Steve was so sweet and encouraging with her and when she hugged him, awww : ) Loved how the Aloha girls oohed at the unexpected ..like knife throwing and seeing the extracted bullet. And awesome, troop leader, Madeline had skills and wasn't portrayed as a helpless female. The cellphone scene was hilarious. Danno looked hot in a tee ;). There was plenty of drama, banter, action and the unexpected. Tom Arnold was psycho! And Kono..I hope you are already suspicious of Michael and DO NOT trust him. I think DDK's acting is phenomenal as Chin and he's right, Kono, little brother can't possibly change his spots!!! And Monkey's, "you can do anything"...awwww. So much to like. All the boys were hot and yeah, who doesn't want to marry Steve : ) : )

Very enjoyable installment- loved Lucy and the girls. Danny and Grace have a neat father-daughter relationship. The episode was entertaining and fun, with some edge of your seat moments. Rates 4 stars from me.

Mrs cleaver

Schmaltzy - good word, wicked schmaltzy MrWriteSF, but not in a bad way. The leader Madeline, was awesome! Had me laughing with her comments about Steve and then yanks a bullet outta Danno's arm, how cool is she? And all this BEFORE she leads Danno off to search the jungle!
Steve gets a de-merit badge for dragging poor Lucy thru the jungle when he coulda taken out Lame-o Tom Arnold at any time. But then we would not have had a story right? Realism, is not this show's strength, just lay back and enjoy it people.
Kono-leaving your gun on the nitestand, with known felon in the house (see realism note above...oh yeah). I'm not seeing "happy ending" coming out of this relationship anytime soon.
End was cute, didn't see them camping in the house lol. But I'm with Lucy, who else wants to marry Steve?!!

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Episode 10 Quotes

Alright ladies. Who wants to learn how to remove a bullet from a gunshot wound?

Steve: I'm going to teach these how to kill and gut a pig tonight Danny.
Danny: That's actually a horror film.
