The Mentalist Review: Narrowing the List

at . Comments

Has anyone else thought that the CBI may be one of the most corrupt branches of law enforcement we've ever seen on TV?

Red John has his moles within the agency. Volkner has his informants. Sometimes, it's felt like half of the staff has been working for the bad guys. Members of the CBI, including two directors, have been shot by their own people or other members of law enforcement.

A Red John Lead

I knew law enforcement was dangerous, but the CBI has taken it to a whole new level. With "The Red Barn," it was revealed that Ray Haffner is a member of Visualize.  While that's not illegal, it's certainly walking the edge of unethical.

Perhaps Lisbon should consider moving on, if not for her own safety then to ensure that Rigsby never again throws her a surprise party.

If I'd ever doubted that Rigsby was an idiot, which I never have, the party with the male stripper solidified that impression. Anyone who's known Lisbon for more than a week could tell she'd hate everything about that idea. Jane knew. Cho knew. But not Rigsby.

Fortunately, three dead bodies and a Red John smiley face were probably enough to make her forget a drunken Rigsby singing karaoke.

The expression on Jane's face when he saw that symbol on the barn was almost painful. Finding that symbol meant that Red John started killing long before anyone knew of him. Long before Jane's family was killed. And Jane's using that information to narrow down his search.

Now we know that there's a link between Red John and Visualize. Now Jane knows that Red John was on that farm in 1988. Jane has narrowed a list of 2,164 people down to 408. This new information will help him whittle that down until Red John is almost within reach.

Overall, I had a few favorite moments in this episode...

First was Jane playing with the Golden Retriever. The man really should get himself a pet. Unfortunately that will probably have to wait until Red John is caught, just like everything else in his life.

Second was Grace's discussion with the priest about Visualize:

What's wrong with wanting to be the most powerful version of you you can be? | permalink

Could Grace still be struggling with her own demons since her fiance's betrayal?  Does this The Mentalist quote hint that she could fall prey to Visualize? To Red John?  I'd love it if Grace went undercover at Visualize to try and gain more information about their connection to Red John but is she strong enough to keep up that type of charade?

Finally, the best moment of the night was Lisbon standing outside Jane's door asking why he wouldn't let her in.

Lisbon: Are we partners or what?
Jane: Come here, partner. | permalink

Her simple question demolished Jane's resolve to keep her at arms' length.

Jane has been running his own investigation. He has his own murder board and his own Red list and it's getting smaller by the day. If Jane and Lisbon truly work together, how long will it be before they narrow it down to Red John?

and so unless you meet him in good circumstances like you meet someone who's his friend and you meet him at a party or whatever, THEN that's perfect but if you meet him in the streets or after a show, then chances are he won't be in his best mood and you'll be disappointed and the magic of PJ will be gone! So I agree that it's best not to meet him, at least force it. I read in France a few girls tried to catch him after his appearance for a show there and he didn't stop, went straight to his car. and these girls were gutted as they'd been waiting for a long time there.

HC I feel the same about meeting him, also if you happen to be there at the wrong time it's not so nice. I read somewhere (or was it on yt?) that he was waiting at the airport one day and he felt exhausted and craved for a quiet moment on his own. He was sitting to have a rest and saw a woman with a kid walking to him he thought damn it he so didn't want to be disturbed so when the woman came to him and asked him for a picture, he said he was sorry but no (in a word) and the thing is, the woman didn't know who he was, she was just asking HIM to take a pic of her and her son. he said he felt so bad after that..

@mimi happy valentine's day. you will find the right man. don't rush it and trust your instincts. my favorite new yorker cartoon has two women at a party talking about a married couple on the other side of the room. one woman says to the other: "he's an original all right. why she didn't pick that up in the first place, i'll never know." i always tease my husband with this. one other thing, men respond to women who think they themselves are lovable. they sense it. seems to me from what i've read from you, you'll be just fine.
also, today, the 14th, simon is getting his star on hollywood blvd. there will be a dedication with speeches from naomi watts and bruno heller. bet we can get a look at it on-line in the next day or two.

@mimi you're so right about the difference between what we see on screen and what we experience one to one. i think in real life, simon is a nice, intelligent talented guy navigating a world of sharpies and killer sharks. jane would do great with those people. i think simon has had a lot of practice but he knows he's not the best at finessing the media. his genuineness comes through and, i suspect, has gotten him in trouble with his family.
i don't have a great desire to meet him. one, because i don't want to be in that shot -- a show biz way to say i don't want to be the 87th female who needs him to react to her that day. second, because though i know he'd be everything the camera tells us and more, he'd just be an annoyed and exhausted guy trying to get away as politely as possible. i'm sure in those situations, he wishes he was as cool as patrick jane.

Ibtw happy St Valentine's!
I'm single but I'll celebrate myself LOL hoping next year I will do so with a wonderful man :-)

never mind about the file! I tried another link but it was held for moderation so it'll come up at one point if they let it. Yes pheromones are what put us together with a man, although to me there is more than that. I think we all love Simon but it doesn't mean we would have chemistry with him if we were to meet him tomorrow. Sometimes you find someone dead gorgeous and adorable but you don't have this thing that make you fall for them, I mean feel in love. Most often we fall in love with random guys that don't even have the features we like-physical or moral.

ani what a great story! believing is the key indeed! I realised that a while ago, the link between what you think and what materialises! Your daughter is such a lucky girl to have you as a mum, I think as parents, we must help thembuild self esteem. KM so you're Australian? must be hard indeed, I'm not living where I want to, I've always been a UK fan and so I guess that's why I love using English and watching English TV and stuff, makes me feel closer to there.

Huisclothes you left out two of my favorites? Simon's big feet and his powerful shoulders (expecially noticeable when he's not wearing the jacket - just the vest). And don't forget his killer smile! Love his cute somewhat childlike (not childish!) ways. All in all he's just adorable.

@bonaduz, Did you download Mimi's second attempt in File Dropper? If your using a Mac you can try clicking Finder and then click Downloads. And, I think on a PC you need to check downloads in the C drive to see if it is on the hard-drive, you could try My Favorites as well. Hopefully that will help or your friend will solve the issue. Good luck.

Boy oh boy huisclothes! You REALLY like this man. But hey - I don't disagree at all, with anything you said. I'm reading a book right now about men and women and how we got to where we are. A lot of it is evolution, females picking the right male for their children. He has to be a strong protector and hunter but still caring enough to stick around and help raise the children. Smell (pheromones) have a lot to do with it, it sais in the book. I don't think that any of us ever smelled Simon Baker before, so there must be something else - as KM and rationalgal pointed out. :-)
@anitraward: seriously great story with your daughter. I always try to show my boys how they can reach their goal. I didn't write a song for them yet though!! But who knows....
@mimi: did you dream of Jane last night? Hope so!! Sorry, I just can't figure out how to read your sory. I downloaded the PDF thing, but I can't find it. A hint? I'll have to ask my friend tomorrow. I'll keep trying.

Rigsby: Anybody feel as bad as I do?
Cho: Not if you feel like you look.

This is very depressing. I'm going to wait outside.
