Out of curiosity what's the most they have ever integrated CBI Ron into the plot? That season 2 episode @huisclothes was talking about? At some point I would hope they really do integrate him in some meaningful way other than saying congratulations lisbon or let me get you some tea Jane, rather than us not knowing anything about him before we see him behind the mask in the finale. And that's the thing, if Red John's someone we had no attachment to, felt nothing about or knew nothing about, someone we couldn't relate to at all, then finding out who he is is kind of worthless. What does the show really want us to come away thinking if we find out someone like CBI Ron is RJ---never trust those you think are harmless? Hardly seems like a powerful message to build up 5 seasons and endless drama for.

Well! We certainly have our pick of good endings! But will someone please come up with a scenario that explains why RJ always rides around in a limo - which makes it fairly easy to ID him? They even got the license number in season 4 finale! That really bugs me and why I come up with suspects who might logically be doing that as part of their position in life.

I'm going to say this again, all the hypotheses that goes on here about The Mentalist is amazing. I'll bet my eye tooth that someone has alresdy figured this thing out! What's even more amazing is that most of the posts are very entertaining and make you think about things you would not ever think about. I think when the show ends, if we don't like the ending we should get together on this site and write our own ending!

anitraward1: THAT is a good story - I love it! Wouldn't that be a hoot and a kick in the head, to quote huisclothes!
CBI Ron is in many episodes, most of the time just sitting at his desk or walking down the hallway. And so is another woman - I see her lots. She played the agent that took care of Erika Flynn, when Erika helped the CBI with a case and later escaped to...maybe Brazil? It's a slender woman, dark curly hair, darkish skin. Doesn't mean anything - I'm just saying.....!

Cont.- He marries her and they conceive a child together. But there are complications and Jane's mother and the child die during child birth. Jane's father being so in love with Jane's mother changes Jane's legal last name to his and raises the boy as his own without ever telling him his true identity. And now with no one knowing who the players are, they all come back together only to find out in the end that they know each other and are related by blood! that is so much fun. and so clever. the mind reels.
@watcher: that tweet i linked basically confirms my suspicion they've known who RJ is all along. At the very least, it wasn't something they just decided on if 1.5 years ago they were telling people we've seen RJ in episodes before. That tweet also tells me that despite how much the actors deny it, they know who RJ is. They may or may not know how the plot ends, but they know alot more than they'l pretend. @anitraward1: I think you could say the same about alot of serial killers, being grown up in bad environments learning to hate humanity. And I agree that he didn't grow up rich, he wouldn't be on Visualize otherwise, but I don't think he necessairly grew up poor. What'll be interesting is if the show portrays RJ as someone who created his entire mystique and aura that lured so many people and that he created all his networks through his own power or if he already had alot of connections from a variety of ways and sources and built off that.

Huisclothes just for fun here is a possible script senario. Ok, here we go! Bret Stiles in his early days married a young wife. They had two children together. One like her and the other like Stiles. Now Stiles, a man with a vision put his work before his wife. She got fed up with the crap and left him taking the son that was most like her. There was a carnival in town and knowing the influence and power her husband had she hides herself on the carnival grounds knowing this is the last place her husband would ever look for her. When the carnival gets ready to move on the man that is known to Jane as his father takes them in. Jane's mother does not tell this man she is married and he falls in love with her.

Cont.- I don't know if Bret Styles knew about Red Smoke back in 1988. He seemed to be busy up to his neck in subterfuge to calm Red John or anybody else down. I think Red John was trained and groomed by visualize to be the best psychopath he could be. Back then you had too sever all ties with family and friends and I don't think it was because they were teaching bible class 101!

re: red john's background.
the next ep features a scientist who studies the biological or genetic component in murderers.
i have put this out there before but could red john be the son of someone we know? my vote being brett stiles - he's murderous though maybe not the one who kills. if he was rj's dad (or uncle or something), he could dispatch his troubled son to a farm to give him a little tough love. rj would have become more and more disturbed and go off on his lifelong rampage. maybe he had his own money (a trust or inheritance from brett or another relative) that he came into at 18 or 21. he could be "some kid painted it" - meaning the boss's kid. brett would keeps tabs on him, condemn his behavior and be ashamed of it but ultimately be unwilling to turn his son in. what think you?

I could see where Red John would grow up hating humanity for it's evil and questioning God for not being there. I could even see how he would adapt a survival of the fittest attitude. In a since he acts like the people he controls. He was just smart enough to figure it out before someone got a hold of him. I think Visualize put Red John on the map, so to speak! I think Visualize put him in touch with his own intelligence. They picked him up, gave him self esteem and a reason for living. Most Bullied people don't possess these qualities after abuse and need lots of work to regain belief in themselves again. Someone who didn't get the right kind of help will eventually lash out.

the ep in which cbi ron played the biggest role was season 2, the red box. lisbon asked ron to hold the rogue scotland yard detective in an interrogation room and when lisbon an cho came in ron was bent over the table having been beaten by scotland yard guy.
i so hope ron is not r.j. that will mean that red john has spent the last five years working 40 hours a week in a drone job at cbi. feels like a bad way for a master of the universe to spend a big chunk of his life. plus, i will be pissed and have to hunt and kill the writers.

I do not believe that Red John started out rich. Why would he be on a dirt poor farm if he bought his way into Visualize? I think he worked his way up. Red John is able to blend in to well. Rich people have a tendency to stick out and don't mix well with the common folk! If Red John started out with wealth he would have been well known, to well known for skulking about murdering people. I agree with Rationalgal about Red John's upbringing. He fits the profile of someone abused of bullied in their younger years of life. A child with no moral or ethical guidance and no protection from physical or mental attacks.

I don't think Owain or the other cast members know who Red John is, so they were probably just joking around in the video. First, I doubt the writers even knew until fairly recently (I sometimes doubt that they even know now.) Second, in order to keep it secret I suspect they wouldn't tell the actors until it was time to give them the scripts for the episode in which Red John is revealed. All you need is for one person to tell somebody who can't keep their mouth shut, and then the entire world would know. So they will probably only know a few weeks before us. I could be wrong, but I think many shows take secrecy very seriously.
