The Mentalist Review: Narrowing the List

at . Comments

Has anyone else thought that the CBI may be one of the most corrupt branches of law enforcement we've ever seen on TV?

Red John has his moles within the agency. Volkner has his informants. Sometimes, it's felt like half of the staff has been working for the bad guys. Members of the CBI, including two directors, have been shot by their own people or other members of law enforcement.

A Red John Lead

I knew law enforcement was dangerous, but the CBI has taken it to a whole new level. With "The Red Barn," it was revealed that Ray Haffner is a member of Visualize.  While that's not illegal, it's certainly walking the edge of unethical.

Perhaps Lisbon should consider moving on, if not for her own safety then to ensure that Rigsby never again throws her a surprise party.

If I'd ever doubted that Rigsby was an idiot, which I never have, the party with the male stripper solidified that impression. Anyone who's known Lisbon for more than a week could tell she'd hate everything about that idea. Jane knew. Cho knew. But not Rigsby.

Fortunately, three dead bodies and a Red John smiley face were probably enough to make her forget a drunken Rigsby singing karaoke.

The expression on Jane's face when he saw that symbol on the barn was almost painful. Finding that symbol meant that Red John started killing long before anyone knew of him. Long before Jane's family was killed. And Jane's using that information to narrow down his search.

Now we know that there's a link between Red John and Visualize. Now Jane knows that Red John was on that farm in 1988. Jane has narrowed a list of 2,164 people down to 408. This new information will help him whittle that down until Red John is almost within reach.

Overall, I had a few favorite moments in this episode...

First was Jane playing with the Golden Retriever. The man really should get himself a pet. Unfortunately that will probably have to wait until Red John is caught, just like everything else in his life.

Second was Grace's discussion with the priest about Visualize:

What's wrong with wanting to be the most powerful version of you you can be? | permalink

Could Grace still be struggling with her own demons since her fiance's betrayal?  Does this The Mentalist quote hint that she could fall prey to Visualize? To Red John?  I'd love it if Grace went undercover at Visualize to try and gain more information about their connection to Red John but is she strong enough to keep up that type of charade?

Finally, the best moment of the night was Lisbon standing outside Jane's door asking why he wouldn't let her in.

Lisbon: Are we partners or what?
Jane: Come here, partner. | permalink

Her simple question demolished Jane's resolve to keep her at arms' length.

Jane has been running his own investigation. He has his own murder board and his own Red list and it's getting smaller by the day. If Jane and Lisbon truly work together, how long will it be before they narrow it down to Red John?

@rationalgal. he does have an amazing ability to say a lot (sometimes simultaneously) with his eyes. i love when they do close-ups (red brick and ivy and red john's friends) and you see his face while he's listening. they haven't come in for that honey shot lately but they should.
in general, they should do more beauty photography of simon in the episodes. if my hypothesis about the biological nature of his attractiveness, it would do a lot for ratings. think about year one and how many times they just let the camera roll on that beautiful punum.

things i love about simon from a completely primitive point of view. i have to say it. the back of his curly head. his upper lip. his wide mouth. his little triangular cheeks when he smiles. the lines under them. his hooded lids over his small eyes. his chipped front tooth. his blond curly (yet not frizzy, how does he do that?) hair. light hair, green eyes yet with skin that gets a tan. his profile. his nose that looks squished yet elegant. his forearms. the way his elegant small head sits on his neck. his long fingers. the scar on his midriff. his smooth seal of a body. his butt. the fact that he looks good eating (no one looks good eating). whew. i feel much better.

@rationalgal there's an article that says the height of the upper face (the area between lip and brow) develops differently in men and women. men have developed shorter faces between brow and upper lip which makes their jaws appear larger, their cheeks appear more flared and the eyebrows more pronounced. the distance between brow and upper lip is divided by the width of the face. the less the difference, the more masculine the face. though other studies say the classic masculine face is not what women are looking for. they want something softer. in another study, will smith and justin timberlake came out on top. i can see the relationship to simon. it's the head and the way the features are molded into the head. it all works together as a unit. simon's upper lip is closer to his nose than most. his lip curls up ever so slightly and his mouth is wide. his canines are small. he has a faberge egg of a head.

I was going to say what Rationalgirl did. He has an excellent balance of features that fits the very masculine when women are ovulating and the softer features that favor the nurture desire women have when selecting a mate and desiring to reproduce. He sends both the bad boy and great dad potential vibe. Plus, in my opinion, he has a very happy face. If he lives to be 110 his face will reflect joy and friendliness.

Just thought I'd stop in again for a bit, among these hundreds of posts. (Love them!) Huisclothes, IMO Simon looks so sexy because he has those puppy dog eyes combined with a strong jaw line. For women, that signals a guy who can be loving and caring as well as strong and protective. In evolutionary terms during the species development in a harsh world, that could be a great combo.

i've been looking at the blog that someone posted - jane is not a girl.
some wonderful photos and funny theme-based posts. simon's smile, simon's ass, etc.
i've been thinking that there's something about his face that must be the biological formula for "good-to-reproduce-with" male that is supposedly programmed into us all. something about the proportion of eyes to nose to lips to chin. certainly, there are men with more perfect model features but something about his face is so -- sexual.
going to do some research here and see what i come up with.
btw. saw lots of photos with simon and his kids. hardest to find stella. but at the mtv awards 2009. she has her father's face and earthy appeal. wonder if she'll act. the boys, so far anyway, are doll-like like their mother.

@ Mimi,
I think "Breath" is a good read. I will confess that I'm a Winton fan, though. For reasons that defy reason I find myself frequently homesick for both Australia and Denmark. Usually not at the same time. So I do what I can to alleviate that feeling, which includes cooking/eating their dishes, reading, and going through photo albums. Today I'd get on a plane for Oz in a heartbeat. Time to throw on my Wallabies sloppy joe (hooded zipped up sweater/jumper), have a Vegemite sandwich with tea, and start a new book on the next break.

you are clearly a loving mom. would like to give a humble opinion. i know parenting is different for everyone. here goes. you helped her manage her feelings. showed her everyone gets nervous in pressure situations. you showed her that as she grew, she would become more able to deal with what the world throws at her. writing the song (which sounds like your idea), and involving the boy (someone she was individuating with outside the family) might not have had the effect you wanted. it sounds like it was equally about your needs -- even if it was presented as something just for her. kids understand that. i think the key is to be straightforward with her about your own pride in your achievement and your own enjoyment of the spotlight -- you certainly seem like a gifted woman. that being said, sounds like she adores you and the song is great.

Thank you KM.

Rigsby: Anybody feel as bad as I do?
Cho: Not if you feel like you look.

This is very depressing. I'm going to wait outside.
