simon received his star on the hollywood walk of fame this a.m. he looked perfect in a grey suit. he broke down and cried as he made his acceptance speech. his wife and kids were in the audience. the australian papers reported the details before any other media. makes sense. also saw a wonderful still of him with naomi watts in a terrific sort of origami grey dress.

no doubt, blinking red light it is a great episode. another perfect moment was when the strains of "what a wonderful world" filled panzer's apartment. that's when patrick knew for sure. and you're right, he goes by his gut with a whole bunch of i.q. points to back him up.
just looked at a viewer ranking of best episodes for season 4. only two really stand out. crimson hat by a mile. next, fugue in red.
fugue in red. hey, i have a idea! let's rip his clothes off and making him put the moves on lisbon!
crimson hat. let's rip his clothes off and make him have sex with a strange woman!
yes, they had great stories but the body never lies.

The Panser ep is one of my favorites. Yes it was contrived but necessary to get RJ back into the story, and in a very dramatic way. None of this (well almost none) happens this way in real life - the whole thing is pure fiction, tho very great fiction. We need this stuff because real life just does not pack the emotional wallop (well, seldom anyhow, and let's be thankful for that) that we get from fiction. We like our senses stirred in harmless ways. Mentalist does it all: adventure, mystery, sex, suspense, drama, love, tragedy, beauty (persons and places), and superb acting, writing and directing to bring it all to life.

I didn't see patronizing in Jane, huisclothes. I saw it as trying to help her become like him. He is more often right than not and he was trying to help her understand his shortcuts was how I saw it. I think as a procedural the twist was weak, but it was Jane. And, Jane often uses very little common sense, he's prideful, he's an egomaniac, and has no boundaries. I felt the Panzer twist was all Jane.

@Mimi,
Go see both. They have very, very different ecosystems. Very different types of natural beauty. Can't agree with the 'spoilt' description, because Oz is to vast and some areas of it especially in the interior have never been explored by anyone but the Aboriginals who inhabit the general area. It is the most biologically diverse place on land and the Great Barrier Reef is the most biologically diverse marine area. Tis true that AUS has the lethal flora and fauna and NZ is rather free of that worry.

took a look at blinking red light again last night. when they did that twist with jane using red john to kill panzer, i thought that was so ingenious and it really planted the seed for what came in the second half of the season and finale - red john establishing a relationship with jane.
it also had some really annoying stuff. jane encouraging lisbon to trust her instincts. "you called it, lisbon! you called it!!" of course, she was wrong. true, she identified some perv who took icky pictures but so had the san joaquin police. if i were lisbon i'd feel patronized. the whole beginning makes me cringe now.
also, jane is full of it when he says this was the only way to stop panzer from killing again. it was? how about having undercover officers track him or set up a decoy victim? great plot twist. shaky foundation.

good morning HC!
wow your observations are so thorough! I had a look at the pilot to see what you were talking about but can't quite see it. The first time I saw the episode, I thought he really was going to talk about his wife and child and then when he mentioned his borther, I thought oh poor him he has a bad life! little I know he was making it up! I love it how he says "because the tuth is mine", his glance there is priceless.

ok. now for real minutiae. interesting line reading that is typical of a simon baker performance. he does a sharp inhale on some lines which makes him seem very smart, very self-contained and very sexy. see it in action in the pilot where linus wagner says "everything you told me was pure fiction?" patrick just says "yes' while drawing breath in. so cool.
when panzer asks "do you think i'm stupid," he replies with the same "yes."
you hear this type of line reading sprinkled all over the devil wears prada where christian thompson is doing everything to get anne hathaway off balance. cutting off her lines with his sharp inhale.
i've always been struck by the way parisian girls say "oui." with their breathe on the intake. very sexy, i think.

oh ok KM I see!
I like my country to be honest, I just fell in love with the UK for many reasons. I love France too, especially the Southern part as I would go there on holiday as a kid-good memories. For a while now I've wanted to visit OZ, the Pacific Ocean, the sea, nature are so appealing. Also a good friend of mine lives there. My best friend says I need to visit New Zealand, much more beautiful and not 'spoilt' like Australia.

No. Just full of wander lust and fell in love as an ex-pat. I thought your country lovely. And, I agree the UK is grand. Sorry for any confusion.

HC your hubby is a keeper! That's love isn't it? I think it's amazing. That's how I see love but I asked the question because I once read somewhere a Simon fan saying her hubby was fed up and she didn't care and dismissed him. I think our partner doesn't need to love what we love but respect it at least and be happy we have found things that we appreciate and make us happy.
Good night! I could go back to bed, feel so exhausted.

my husband records every mentalist for me and he makes sure he gets it twice on the la feed as well as the new york feed. he has created a simon baker category for me so anything that comes on with simon bakers gets recorded. he is a very secure man and pushes me to enjoy anything that makes me happy. on my second time watching an episode, he will watch with me and help me understand what's going on because i'm so sometimes so transfixed by patrick, i forget to listen. he saw a clip of simon in the guardian and said "is that before he knew he could take that hair to the bank?" my husband was also the one who suggested that patrick might be living off his wife's insurance money. that would be funny. he has a very dry sense of humor and could trade zingers with jane. he's an original all right.

ahah yes he has put on weight, it's even more obvious when you rewatch the Guardian, I don't know if it's because Nick is much different from Jane but it's like he's another person in that show, his face looks different and he's much slimmer. but I don't mind at all, actually I think he looks better now. @mimi i do love this profile. that shot in the pilot when he comes into the house ad stands there in profile which his name is supered over his image. the scene where he's riding the carnival waiting for the young son of a murdered woman. when he searched the twin girls' room for bugs and found them. that profile really is the face to launch a thousand ships.
and i think his degree of muscularity is perfect. he has a swimmer's body so the muscles are stretched and molded. always think guys who get too cut look vain and a little effeminate. i do think he's gained five or ten pounds since year one and might look good if he lost it -- but i'll take him anyway.

(hard to believe but he had that quality then)
there's a certain intellect to their beauty. and the blond hair and eyebrows gives the face and head a sculptural quality. simon, of course, has it. he's elegant and sophisticated but combines it with an earthy animal quality i've never seen before in the same man.

YES! I remembered yesterday that Simon was going to be honored today! Ican't wait to see this! he so deserves that star!
BTW regarding his kids, his daughter takes after him to much. I have noticed that girls tend to look after their dads while boys look after their mums, my niece looks like my brother so much, for ex and I can see this is true for many people. I find it hard to see a resemblance with his sons, they look like Rebecca so much, the little one has curly hair though.
