The Vampire Diaries Review: A Lump of Kol

at . Comments

So THAT's where the saying Kol in your stocking comes from!

On this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, "Catch Me If You Can," this Original blood sucker made his random presence felt, urging Jeremy not to go after the cure; nearly killing Rebekah; and compelling Damon to take out the hunter who could awaken Silas and apparently bring an end to the entire world.

If you believe in scary stories, that is.

Jeremy v. Elena

My overall reaction to the episode? Blah. It wasn't terrible, but it was certainly a letdown after a fast-paced opening few minutes. I don't feel like we ended someplace especially different from where we started.

Let's start with the same complaint I had a week ago: compulsion, schmul-pulsion. This storyline crutch has got to go. It's far too easy to have Originals just compelling their inferior vampires left and right. In this case, granted, it led to a very cool save of Damon by Stefan (you might say he arrived at breakneck speed, eh? Eh?!?), and Damon being locked in the dungeon is at least a twist in the storyline... but can one actually recognize when one is being compelled?

Damon actually warning Jeremy to run while chasing after him was incredibly lame. I'm not sure of the rules of compulsion and I'm not sure if the show is either. The writers just seem to use this whenever it's convenient.

Elsewhere, let me get this straight: Sheriff Forbes went out of her jurisdiction to take Shane in for questioning... then simply let a town citizen interrogate him... because the temporary Mayor (who had never been seen in Mystic Falls before) said it was okay?!?

Yes, we suspend our disbelief when it comes to the overarching idea of supernatural beings on TVD, but is it too much to ask for a realistic, competent police force? My eyes still hurt from rolling so often at the notion of Bonnie playing any role in the questioning of Shane.

Still, like so much on this show, the end result was intriguing: Bonnie Bennett, witch prodigy. Will she use her powers for good or grow into a ticking time bomb of pure evil?

One more complaint before I move on to the positives: Where was Caroline Forbes? Where, Julie Plec?!? What have you done with her and when will we see here again?!?!?!?

A Shady Shane?

As for what I did like about "Catch Me If You Can?"

  • Sarcastic, uncaring Stefan. Correction: I LOVED this. It's a logical step for the character, it's a dynamite portrayal by Paul Wesley and this is one of the best Vampire Diaries quotes of the series: You don't know what I look like when I'm not in love with you.
  • Red. Hot. Strebekah. Sex.
  • The mystery of a new team in the race. As I've written about before, the general through-line of multiple teams competing for the cure is fascinating and enjoyable. It's been bogged down by sire bond nonsense and now an over-reliance on compulsion. But I'm all in on new alliances being built and new relationships being spawned as a result. So... who do you think that suicidal chap in the professor's office was working with?
  • Poor Matt, Least Valuable Player. It's the jacket, dude. You've gotta ditch that jacket.
  • An Elijah mention!

We're left with Bonnie once again flirting with dark magic; Elena actually coming up with a decent plan to off Kol and therefore his bloodline; Damon locked up; and Stefan and Rebekah getting down.

What was your favorite development from the episode? And should we really be trusting Rebekah with that headstone?

I don't want to jump to conclusions or assume things, but the 'other player' might be Elijah or Katherine. We really haven't seen those two ever since the season started and I don't count the episode where Katherine appears as a "Conscience" for Elena. I could be wrong, but hey, they tend to bring characters in and out of this series. I enjoyed watching this episode, I don't hate or love it, but it was okay. I think the writers can do better.

wow I get exhausted from reading some of these posts lol

I do not get why the viewership is down. I thought this was a fantastic episode. However I am not a fan of Rebekah so I do not like Stefan sleeping with her! I am glad Stefan stood up to Elena, she can't expect Stefan to be okay and cheery around her at least not for awhile. Damon will have a small role until the is uncompeled by Kol. I am sure lots of Damon lovers are pissed that they are doing this but I am fine with it. I like Damon but it does not bother me. Shane is bad news and sadly Bonnie will do something bad or get killed or something.

about shanes motives to resurrect silas - even if his wife and son are dead I don't get it. cause all shane says is that he will resurrect those who died for him. not just everyone and anyone that you ask him to like silas is some saint.
also i don't think silas can do this even if he is real because the main thing in tvd was that when you're dead there's no coming back. if you make it possible to bring people back to life it just makes everything meaningless.
and what even is silas? they keep saying he's immortal but is he a vampire or what? because the original family were the first vampires so where does he fit in the timeline? how is he immortal? who the hell. everything about him seems so ridiculously bed time story-ish.
and why is kol the only one concerned about silas? if it was something their parents told them about wouldn't all of them equally believe it. in conclusion - I don't want silas to be real. it'll ruin everything.

I like point of Sunshine but i don`t thik Julie &Co care or read the fans comments. They have the script of 16 ep already ..... they have decided who dies/how or with wich brother Elena will end up. and my feeling is like I told before ...

Finally I want to add that I really got tired of hearing everyone throwing on Damon and Elena's face that everything Elena does is 'cause of the sire bond I think that the only reason for me to want her to get the cure is so they will stop this nonsense.

this plan is a proof of her words 'cause like it seems she won't mind killing Kol and his bloodline vampires in order to keep the two men that she loves safe aka Damon and Jeremy specially that he's the one who started messing with them.
5/ I’m really fond of Damon Salvatore (well, it’s not something new I’ve always been fond of him) it's just growing with every episode and in addition to all he has done and been through that I admire and feel proud of him for it I just can't get over how every time he is in his lowest moments all he asks for is seeing Elena. And this episode was no exception, it broke my heart to see him bled out by Stefan and all he ask for is seeing her 'cause she's all he wants and all he needs but he can’t’cause of Stefan’s cruelness.

Conclusion : They (Julie &CO) want a new tv serial (The original`s) and don`t give /wish to give us more of TVD, they want to finish`it.
For a fantasy story ……. Sorry but they don’t suppose to be so serious about the story = real life, and they forgotten about what suppose to be ,, a fantasy story,, , what is the purpose of TV SERIAL FANTASY : a story for us where we can`t dream and live a love, a happy ending , a story different from real/hard life .
I `am going to stop watching !!!! PS Sorry for the errors on writing this …I am from Europe (Romania)

1st I want to talk about her and Damon and how for a moment I felt like they both are sired to each other with every time she calls him he stop and turn to her, she was his distraction from the compulsion even if for few seconds and how she asked him to fight it and rub out his insecurity by telling him that he can do it 'cause she loves and he loves her and not 'cause Stefan did it as he told her. And apart from how flawless this scene was I find it interesting that when she asked Stefan to fight it she told him that he can do it 'cause he loves her and didn't mention her love for him as a reason too. Just saying. 2nd I really loved her plan to kill Kol it was like getting two birds with one stone and as there is some people questioning Elena's morals I want to say that Elena had made it clear that she doesn't mind be the bad gay in order to keep the people that she loves safe and this plan is a proof of her words 'cause like it seems she won't mind killing Kol and his bloodline vampires in order to keep the two men that she loves safe aka Damon and Jeremy specially that he's the one who started messing with them.

And despite the fact that it was really painful to see Damon under Kol's compulsion I find it a brilliant idea from the writers for 2 reasons: 1st I wouldn't imagine a better way to show how mach Damon really cares about Jeremy (that we know he would never say it so it has to be shown by his acts) than making him choosing to die over killing the Gilbert younger brother. And it was amazing to see these two unable to kill each other ‘cause they care about each other. 2nd it's like the writers made it as another obstacle that will keep Damon/Elena apart as the sire bond wasn't going to be enough for that.
4/ I really enjoy watching this new confident strong Elena.
