The Vampire Diaries Review: A Lump of Kol

by at . Comments

So THAT's where the saying Kol in your stocking comes from!

On this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, "Catch Me If You Can," this Original blood sucker made his random presence felt, urging Jeremy not to go after the cure; nearly killing Rebekah; and compelling Damon to take out the hunter who could awaken Silas and apparently bring an end to the entire world.

If you believe in scary stories, that is.

Jeremy v. Elena

My overall reaction to the episode? Blah. It wasn't terrible, but it was certainly a letdown after a fast-paced opening few minutes. I don't feel like we ended someplace especially different from where we started.

Let's start with the same complaint I had a week ago: compulsion, schmul-pulsion. This storyline crutch has got to go. It's far too easy to have Originals just compelling their inferior vampires left and right. In this case, granted, it led to a very cool save of Damon by Stefan (you might say he arrived at breakneck speed, eh? Eh?!?), and Damon being locked in the dungeon is at least a twist in the storyline... but can one actually recognize when one is being compelled?

Damon actually warning Jeremy to run while chasing after him was incredibly lame. I'm not sure of the rules of compulsion and I'm not sure if the show is either. The writers just seem to use this whenever it's convenient.

Elsewhere, let me get this straight: Sheriff Forbes went out of her jurisdiction to take Shane in for questioning... then simply let a town citizen interrogate him... because the temporary Mayor (who had never been seen in Mystic Falls before) said it was okay?!?

Yes, we suspend our disbelief when it comes to the overarching idea of supernatural beings on TVD, but is it too much to ask for a realistic, competent police force? My eyes still hurt from rolling so often at the notion of Bonnie playing any role in the questioning of Shane.

Still, like so much on this show, the end result was intriguing: Bonnie Bennett, witch prodigy. Will she use her powers for good or grow into a ticking time bomb of pure evil?

One more complaint before I move on to the positives: Where was Caroline Forbes? Where, Julie Plec?!? What have you done with her and when will we see here again?!?!?!?

A Shady Shane?

As for what I did like about "Catch Me If You Can?"

  • Sarcastic, uncaring Stefan. Correction: I LOVED this. It's a logical step for the character, it's a dynamite portrayal by Paul Wesley and this is one of the best Vampire Diaries quotes of the series: You don't know what I look like when I'm not in love with you.
  • Red. Hot. Strebekah. Sex.
  • The mystery of a new team in the race. As I've written about before, the general through-line of multiple teams competing for the cure is fascinating and enjoyable. It's been bogged down by sire bond nonsense and now an over-reliance on compulsion. But I'm all in on new alliances being built and new relationships being spawned as a result. So... who do you think that suicidal chap in the professor's office was working with?
  • Poor Matt, Least Valuable Player. It's the jacket, dude. You've gotta ditch that jacket.
  • An Elijah mention!

We're left with Bonnie once again flirting with dark magic; Elena actually coming up with a decent plan to off Kol and therefore his bloodline; Damon locked up; and Stefan and Rebekah getting down.

What was your favorite development from the episode? And should we really be trusting Rebekah with that headstone?

Can I just throw this out there?
Has anyone thought the mystery team possibly could be Katherine & ____?? Or just Katherine by herself?
Just throwing that out there....!
That would be a GREAT twist in my opinion!

Please stop with the Poor Damon crap.
I'm not a fan at all of Stefan and Rebecca. It feels forced.

They seriously gotta cut the crap between Bonnie and Shane. They're both boring.
Shane out, and Bonnie, go get yourself a life! Where was Caroline? Missed her MUCH. And her being near Klaus... This time I was pleased April wasn't messing around. The girl's able to do one face only. Ugh. Altogether, one of the worst episodes of season 4 so far. But something really good anyway: Klaus

I didn't really enjoy this episode.I usually love TVD but this one..kind of a bore for me first of all... the things i didn't like : The whole Kol compelling Damon to kill Jeromy and Claus being all...nice and whatever that was and i hated the way Stefan treated Elena. I get he is mad she slept with his brother but come on man... she loves him she had feelings for him when she was human and she has now and they're not going away..get over it it's not like you didn't break up. Oh and btw Elena is happy ..she smiles she is free she is awesome like that she said herself..she'll probably always love Stefan but right now..she is inlove with Damon it sucks that it's his brother hey it would've sucked anyway but Damon waited for a long time to be with Elena and this sire bond crab needs to go..Elena loves Damon she cares about him she has cared since the end of Season 1. Yeah back then it was Stefan and yeah she chose Stefan in the end of Season 3 (totally lame btw) but even though she chose Damon now and it was pretty normal considering how Stefan looked at her, like a broken doll that needed to be fixed ...he doesn't accept her the way she is now..he needs to be happy without her but without being a jerk about it. The other thing that seriously annoys me is Bonnie.. I am sorry i never liked her ..i never will she needs to go . And Shane..all his talk About Silas it's actually pretty interesting . And klas needs to go too..he became way too boring..he is not a villian anymore he is just a weird friend they all have ... i hope Caroline actually is in the next episode i missed her and Tyler . The things i liked : Stefan and Rebekah..they're so hot together and i think they can become a real couple they're cute and it's nice for Stefan to move on for real from Elena and be happy

I totally love this new Stefan, he is more confident and seems more powerful. Elena is pissing me off, but i think she is meant too because as an audience we need a reason for us to want her to turn human again and return to her normal self. I miss Elijah and hope to see more of him.

4) i was happy about the mention of elijah because i know we are getting closer til i can see him on my screen.
5) bored of compulsion, bored of expression magic, bored of resurrection talks but no explanations of the consequences. bored of this stupid shipping and triangle bore fest we have twilight for that please mature plec.
6) people need to wake up and realise that kol is right and that silas is evil and shane needs to get rid of. let alone bonnie is all alone
7) glad there was no caroline n tyler, they have declined in awesomeness and plec has made them the new elena and stefan pre-vamp.

1) why is everyone forgetting that damon spent this whole episode saving judgmental matt and jer. i'm lost did i miss something? kol compelled him and he was willing to die for jer, how is that selfish. everyone is forgetting that his bestie was Alaric (sigh come back with elijah n save TVD). he feels to protect Jer for his sake as much as elena. stop comparing him to stefan im bored of seeing it and it takes away from the show!
2) rant over, glad stefan still has his balls, want them to focus and figure out who the mystery guy was rather than the trivial bs.
3) the mention of elijah makes me think it was him who sent the dude and loved the real life reference as to why he isn't appearing

This was by far the silliest episode I've seen... but I did like the new Stefan. He's just an a-hole and that's kind of cool. I agree the compulsion/sire bond crap is just stupid and a convenient excuse for poor writing. All I say, is dig deeper writers, dig deeper... there has to be more to you than these easy tricks.
