The Vampire Diaries Review: Compulsive Behavior

On your marks... get set... CURE!

The Vampire Diaries finally returned after a lengthy hiatus this week, airing an "After School Special" that featured the return of Rebekah, harsh truth from Elena, a transformation for Tyler, sides being chosen in a race for the elusive elixir and, unfortunately, a rather lame writing crutch to get everyone there.

Who knew compulsion could make everything so easy?

Questions for Stefan

It was a pleasure to see Claire Holt back in my living room (or as close as she'll ever get to my living room... damn), as Rebekah can always be relied on to bring the perfect combination of pain and pity, revenge and bitterness.

She lashes out because she's lonely, she turns her sorrow into rage. Can you blame her? Considering all she's been through with Klaus as a brother?

Rebekah is a terrific character, but simply locking everyone in the library and forcing the truth out of them was far from a terrific move for the show. Didn't we learn in Writing 101 to show and not tell? It doesn't make for mesmerizing television to have characters sitting around a table, reciting dialogue to move the story forward.

Not to mention how this just adds another chink in the paper thin armor of that whole sire bond thing. Why didn't Damon just have Klaus compel Elena before? If there's a way for her to be forced to come clean about her feelings... why didn't that come up before?

When we left The Vampire Diaries Season 4 in December, Damon ordered Elena away. Fast forward fewer than one episode and now she's certain that she loves him and that's enough for him to invite her back to the cabin for some naked bedroom action (if you know what I mean!). Please, pretty, pretty please with sugar and Bonnie's magic salt on top - can we be done now?

Can Elena and Damon just be together without all this contrived back-and-forth?

Of course, the main takeaway here is that Stefan now knows the truth. But he won't accept the truth. That's why he wants to team up with Rebekah and find that cure in order to turn Elena human again and find out - no, really, truly, seriously find out! - if she's in love with Damon. No wonder Elena feels like a "broken toy," a sad/apt description for how Stefan has been looking at her.

I feel the guy's pain, but it's rather clear at this point: she loves Damon. Move on, Stef. May I recommend the gorgeous blonde blood-sucker standing right in front of you?

Out in the woods, meanwhile... it's AWESOME! Jeremy is jacked, Klaus is turning humans into vampire prey, Matt is wearing a varsity letter jacket. We need to dedicate a lot more time to this storyline (enter The Vampire Diaries promo for next week's episode. Yes!). I'm all in on Jeremy and his mark and Klaus' being a total bad ass and double pepperoni pizza and the idea that some immortal dude named Silas can raise the dead.

This is fun Vampire Diaries lore and mythology, a lot more fun than Elena's oscillating, supposedly sired feelings.

Finally, in the Totally and Completely Random News Department:

  • Bonnie's father has been elected temporary Mayor, even though he's never actually around and has been referenced about three times in four seasons.
  • Kol is back!
  • April is ping-ponging back and forth from Rebekah's secretary to Bonnie's partner in witch crime to town tattle tale. Sorry, Katherine, you're no longer the show's most obvious plot device.

So, yes, The Vampire Diaries is back, but so are some of the problems that have plagued its past few episodes. Still, I maintain hope!

Team Stelena vs. Team Delena has been replaced with Team Rebekah/Stefan vs. Team Klaus/Damon vs. Team Shane/Bonnie. Who will get to the cure first? What will that squad do with it at that time? And who are YOU rooting for, TVD Fanatics?

Okay screw the triangle. Seriously sick and freaking tired of it. We get the point. Steph loves elana. Damon loves elena. Everyone wants elana. Elana doesn't want anyone but step. We freaking get it. Fins something else to do with the characters instead of having them moon for each other. I am so glad to see bonnie's dad. Only cause its the dude from supernatural who played the original vampire. I LOVE DUDE!!! And gawd prof creepy just irks me beyond all reason. And tyler needs to work on his acting cause Ididnt feel the crying scene. And Ilove beks reason for wanting the cure. I just love beks anyway

A really disappointing episode like most episodes of this season have been. But team Stefan/Rebekah for the cure definitely.

Damon and Elena should be together they are much more sexier.. Stephan needs to move on he can not have it all remember Kathrine go back to her or Rebecca

First off which irks me about this whole dumbass shit wars is DE fans have the audacity to say now Stefan knows hows it feels and that's not the case.
Damon was a effing interloper who develop feelings for someone he shouldn't had in the first place so all the effing heartache was his own fault. Stefan was with Elena first point blank and I would be effing upset too as she just told him like two or three week he was best choice she ever and made and now she contradicted herself. And why the hell should Stefan allow DE to have smooth sailing when Damon never gave him the same courtesy? She sounds like she is crazy like Blair Waldorf season 5 crazy making two very absolutes that contradict one another and she in this episode contradicted early statements she made about her feelings for Damon in this season.

I'm loving every minute of Stefan being stubborn and not getting it in his head until its concrete cement that Elena is into Damon because it took ssssoo long and so much heart-eating to get us to Damon!! Elena isn't being selfish or acting like a bitch, she's always been a compassionate person who cares about her family and the lives of other people, she cares about doing the right thing by them. You can't control who you love and it's undeniably been Damon for a while. And that happens in real life! All the time! People grow, change, don't fit together the same anymore. Elena has been upfront about it since she admitted it to herself despite the resistance of everyone else. She may need to realize she doesn't get to ask Stefan to wait up and talk anymore, though. But I don't even mind that. Damon hearing Elena say I Love You? Best face he has ever, ever made. I can't wait for him to get the love he has coming to him.

I found my mind wandering during this episode. They've really got to do more to grab viewers' attention. The love triangle is getting dull. The weekly cliff-hangers turn out to be nothing the following week. Spice it up, writers!!! Vampires are surely more evil and fun than this. Damon used to be a joy to watch.

Loved it so glad it,s back, love Damon and Elena together,They look so right together,Hope Rebecca, and Stephan get together,And Jerermy is Hot....

This show is absolutely the furthest thing from "boring"... Haha Im thrilled to finally both love the show and love the main relationship.. Damon and Elena! They both can blossom now, and so can everyone else. This show was always a teenage soap opera, how are some of you only just realizing it? And for complaining that Elena "just stopped loving Stefan to love his brother" as I recall she has been falling for him for seasons now from when it was just a hateful fascination to curiosity and fear and anger and irresistable, undeniable attraction... stuff the most fiery passions are built on! She is discovering the depths of herself that Stefan himself doesn't contain to relate to and could never have revealed to her, despite what he might write down in his gooey angsty journal. I always thought that if they were going to have elena with Stefan that the casting crew made the worst decision ever hiring PW because he can't hold a candle to the bonfire that is Damon. Nina Dobrev couldn't even resist him in real life!!

Whatever the critics say, I LOVED it!!!!!!!!!!! Really enjoyed seeing Rebekah,(I really love her character and feel for her), Matt, Jeremy and Damon in action together, Klaus as badass as he should be, and the best dialogue was Damon saying, "Get into the car. Come to me." Those who're saying this is too sudden, Elena and Damon?? It took three and a half freakin' seasons for it to happen, not a few episodes!

Stefan really needs to move on. She told you that she wasn't IN love with you, what more do you want? "I need to find out she REALLY feels about me." LAME. Shane is creepy ugh and I wish somebody would tell Bonnie that the magic's she practicing is bad, EVIL. She's so naive, hanging to everything Shane says. Loved Kol! His new hair looks good!
