Hawaii Five-0 Review: Man Date Mandate

by at . Comments

I'll admit it: as someone who has attended Super Bowl parties only because they are a place where it is socially acceptable to eat your weight in guacamole, I'm sure a lot of "Pa'ani (The Game)" was wasted on me.

Steve & Danny Lament

A few of the football-related Hawaii Five-0 quotes managed to penetrate even my thick skull, so I imagine that there was a lot for the devoted football fan to enjoy, and I apologize to you all for the important stuff that I am sure that I missed. Next round of guac is on me, guys.

But there are two things I do know a lot about: bromance and lite rock. And, luckily for me, they were both in plentiful supply in this episode (the latter in the form of Train's Pat Monahan as villain-of-the-week Neil Redding).

"Pa'ani (The Game)" took on bromance vs. romance, reaching a definitive verdict: bromance is king! Call it from the mountaintops!

From Steve blowing off Catherine to go to the Pro Bowl with Danny... to Danny blowing off the Pro Bowl to stay with Steve in the hospital... to the adorable McDanno bickering, this episode was a valentine to bromance, man dates and the fact that Danny is basically a way better life partner to Steve than Catherine.

I'm not saying Catherine was a jerk to go to the Pro Bowl and have an great time on TV while Steve was getting his shoulder jammed back into its socket at the hospital, except... oh wait, I totally am. Thank God Steve has someone to prioritize his well-being/ happiness/shoulder health, you know?

The episode's guest star MVP award had to go to throw-back lounge singer Nicky "The Kid" Demarco, who managed to be both hilariously over-the-top and true-to-life at the same time - there are still tough guy crooners like this, who claim that they used to roll with Sinatra, in almost every resort town in America (though most of them are nowhere near as entertaining).

With all the football and bromance-ular excitement in the air this week, the actual crime just couldn't compete. Monahan's evil and nattily dressed computer executive was fun to watch whenever he was on screen, and the murder was enjoyably complex - I certainly didn't guess the killer until he revealed himself.

But this week was truly about bromance and comedy, and the crime was just a vehicle to get it to us; much like how the corn chip is simply the vehicle to get guac into our mouths.

And that was more than alright. This episode was classic light fare (well, as light as anything involving a violent murder can be), and from the deep, frozen depths of a northeast winter, I certainly welcomed the sight of two guys who really care about and support each other, joking around in paradise.

What did you think of this week's crime? What great football jokes did I miss? Do you think Catherine made the right call with those Pro Bowl tickets?

I have to say while I enjoyed this episode I was disappointed in Steve the boyfriend and how the writers have written him lately. What happened to the guy that planned a romantic picnic at sunset on the beach? Or arranged to have his reserved training on the Enterprise to have some extra time with Catherine because he knew that was the kind of Valentine gesture she would like? I'm not saying he shouldn't have made plans to attend the Pro Bowl with Danny (Kono was planning on going with Chin and Duke and not Adam) but Catherine was so excited when she showed him the tickets I would have like to see Steve a little more conflicted and Danny offering up the advice for Steve to go with Catherine. I am a fan of the bromance, have been from the start of the show, but I think they've been laying it on a little too much lately.
As for Catherine being a jerk? Really? Did I miss the scene where she knew that Steve injuried his shoulder and she proceeded to blow him off and go to the game anyway? The last time we saw Catherine talking to Steve was an hour before kickoff when he and Danny were on their way to see the blonde con woman. She told him she would try and find them at half time. After he threw that pass to Danny when he bent over pressing into his shoulder she realized he was hurting and she asked him what was wrong. Oh and by the way, I thought it was very thoughtful of her to get an autographed ball for Danny. Shows that she cares about Steve's friends. Sorry for the rant, but some of the Catherine bashing gets old and I have to respond when it's not fair like in this case.

Did anyone notice that Steve's top changed from a blue shirt and tshirt to a green polo and then back and then again in this episode? wonder why.

I loved the episode. I think it deserves to be mentioned that the actor who played Nicky "The Kid" Demarco, Larry Manetti, was one of the stars of that other classic Hawaiian show, Magnum P.I.

This was a solid episode, not as good as previous four but still very entertaining. The story was as simple as possible and Danny wasn't as irritating as usuall. We got to see Kamekona and his cousing plus "survival camp". The only thing I disliked was Steve and Cat, sorry but the show writters do terrible job and it almost seems like Steve and Cat have no common interests. It was realy awkward moment when Steve turned down Cat's invitation to the game, it would nice to have told in advance that he was going with Danny. Also I do miss Danny/Grace interactions. Anybody knows when Tailor Grubbs will be back?

@Gabrielle Moss bad review like always and you are obvious a McDanno fan. When is Jim coming back!! So you saying Cath is a jerk. First maybe she even didn't know that Steve was in the hospital and second if she would have know she would have run to the hospital to be with Steve. I was extremelly disappointed with Steve.... he just brushed off her invitation like that. I felt sorry for Cath because she was so hype about the tickets. Not a good move, and instead of saying he would have the pre-game thing with her, he just invited her for something that he had already planned with Danny and apparently Kamekona Steve always puts Danny first I am sick of the McDanno relationship, Steve is the worse boyfriend EVER!! Good for Cath to take Kono with her, their tiny scene was the best part of the episode. Hope Cath breaks up with Steve and move on then Steve will realize what he let go and took for granted. Yes Steve get ready to be very jealous!!

Worst episode of the season. Danny has become the most irritating character on the show and when Steve is around him he becomes as irritating. Back to the usual predictable story where the 2 stooges arrest the first guy they meet. Catherine's character has become a joke with Steve as usual never having any time for her. The writers should let Steve and Danno walk off into the sunset and let Chin and Kono take over. Best part of the episode was Kono and Catherine waving from the pitch. Catherine's needs to dump McGarrett and find someone who knows how to treat a woman.

Cont.... I know she is there to be his partner, she understands Steve and bring out the softer side of him, that is good. Im not saying Steve cant have a gf, but I was expecting her role to be more 50/50 see her in her job and seeing her as Steve gf.I wanted to give her a chance and be open about her after a few episodes of this season b ut so far, im a little let down on her role, I thought she was going to work differently. I mean to see a real relationship between Steve and Cathe, ups and dows like any relationship, so far their relationship had been just peachy with no mistakes or errors, just the exception of her lying ot Steve about what happened to h er mother that she had to lie in request for his mom.

Cont.... I am sorry but once again Catherine presence was not necessary, she was just there as a player and was not even involevd inthe investigative case. Why was she in the episode anyway? Just for us to see she is Steve gf and she got tikcets to the game for Steve and manage to find a way for Danny to be inside the stadium at the end? If she would not be there, the episode would have worked out just fine. For me it was more of a men episode as football was included in the episode. The writers looks like they do not know still what to do to her after 17 episodes. Her talend is being underused. She can do more as not just Steve gf who loves him and cares for him and do favors for him. Doesnt she has a job in the enterprise or she is still on leave? I guess Catherine role this season was focus more of being Steve gf rather than Naval officer, maybe next season we can see her doing both things? and that is why I have seen her so far doing it. The episode was Ok. I like the bromance of Steve and Danny as always and the episode bickering was good. I like that Steve choose Danny over Catherine to go to the game even if Danno missed the game because he stayed with Steve at the hospital which was so nice of Danny, sticking to his buddy in bad or good situations. Chin did not show up a lot on this episode but maybe it was written that way. I found funny when Danny tried to make his phone work to the table screen and he just could not do it and let Kono take over, haha!!! Train vocalist guest appearance was good. The football player presence was very little after announcing it with a big fuzz in earlier days. Classical Lines of the episode: "She was about to send a copy of his hard drive... " by email?? and A real life imbecile!" Haha!!
