Hawaii Five-0 Review: Shrimp Truck Lock-Down

by at . Comments

As the greatest minds of our generation have said, time and time again: the first rule of fight club is that you do not talk about fight club, not even if you're Summer Glau.

But, luckily, I let my fight club membership lapse (I forgot to send the renewal slip in on time), so I am ready and able to talk my head off about "Kekoa (Warrior)."

McGarrett Hire a P. I.

A lively, nicely-paced episode, "Kekoa (Warrior)" stripped things down to basics - no high-tech weapons or elaborate conspiracies, just straight-up bad guys, people getting kicked in the face and someone hitting on Steve's mom.

Though it didn't quite provide the high-stakes drama of recent episodes like "Hookman" or "Hana I Wa'la (Scandal)," I thought the hour was very effective, in no small part due to Glau's turn as Maggie, the mourning daughter/ martial arts bad-ass.

I've been a fan of Glau's since her time on Firefly (yes, I write about TV on the Internet, so I am legally required to love Firefly; it's in the Constitution, look it up!), and I thought she turned what could have been a ho-hum part into something memorable with her formidable acting chops (as well as her formidable face-kicking chops).

Glau - who also did great work on the gone-too-soon Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - is always pretty excellent at combining expressiveness and depth with ass-kicking skills in her roles. She's a true gem for anyone who likes their action-adventure to be emotionally engaging, and I hope she finds her way to a regular TV gig again soon.

One of the consistent delights of Hawaii Five-0 has to be the guest stars - from Firefly's River Tam, to Freaks and Geeks' Bill Haverchuck, to Alex Mack herself, you never know which iconic star of cult TV or film is going to wander across the screen at any given moment. We can now add to this list Treat Williams, the man perhaps best known as "the dad from Everwood."

Williams charmed, wheedled and grabbed almost all of this week's best Hawaii Five-0 quotes as the private eye who mixes business with pleasure with Doris McGarrett (ah, but who among us could truly resist Christine Lahti's charms, right?).

The episode also included an important public service announcement: if you attend a rowdy bachelorette party that ends with the bride-to-be getting humped on by a guy in leather chaps , you will witness a murder within the next two hours, no ifs, ands, or buts (or butts) about it. Be careful out there, ladies!

Did you dig the mixed martial arts action? What did you think of Kamekona's brief flirtation with the wrong side of the law? Who's been your favorite "famous from another show" guest star so far?

"We can now add to this list Treat Williams, the man perhaps best known as 'the dad from Everwood.'" Oh you CHILD!!!!!! :-) I know you were making a reference to a TV show, but to me, Treat Williams will forever be "Berger" from the late 70s film version of "Hair." As for the ep, of course Doris "made" the PI--he was hardly discreet despite Steve's warning that she was a trained agent / spy. Not one of the more intense episodes, but it had something for everyone--a male stripper for the (straight) ladies / gay men, and a girlfight for the straight guys. :-)

I do have several concerns on certain topics that were addressed in the first episodes of the season and so far the writers or producers haven’t given a follow up and I wonder if they are going to do it in 7 episodes remaining of this season or they are waiting for Season 4 to address it and keep everyone on the loop and guessing. It be nice to tweet Peter and ask him about it, if some of you have a Tweeter account and perhaps can ask him as I don’t have a Tweeter account. 1. The film roll Doris found underneath the house floor, what does it have that may compromise things for Steve or even Doris.
2. When are we going to know the connection about Doris and Wo Fat? I hope it wotn be that Steve ane Wo fat will be related, that for me will run everything.
3. When Steve is going to know that Catherine is lying to him and know what happen to her mother during the Mangosta episode?
4. Is Adam brother Michael be back and we will know what Michael did to Konos gun? Overall was an ok episode but it was not the best one.

II did like though the last scene where Steve opened the door and saw the PI there and Steve reaction to it. So now that Treat Williams is gone, is Steve going to know more about what he will discover once he starts dating his mom? Because im pretty sure Treat wont be back and the story will be implied and not shown on screen so Steve will know eventually. I hope we know. As Im not sure either about if their relationship will blossom or not I thought she was already back to the Navy. I want to see her doing Naval Intel, isn’t that her duty? This season she has acted more like Steve gf than a naval officer. When are we going to see her really doing what she really is, the last episode of the season or Season 4 perhaps?? Regarding Catherine performance I felt she only appeared at the end of the episode which for me was totally unnecessary and it did not add anything to the episode just for the fans to see that she is still Steve gf and they are a couple. The last scene would have been ok without her. We already know that, stop showing us that, After 16 episodes Catherine has not done anything that can be meaningful in my opinion. I had an open mind when she was going to be a regular and I wanted to give her a chance in the first episodes but in 16 episodes, she has not wow me not a bit like for me to say Wow nice job Cath, she really does her job well, etc. I think the producers even Peter still do not know what to do with her and that is why the only way to present her to the show is only by being Steve gf. So if she will be in Season 4 that is where she will really do her job as Naval officer? II did like though the last scene where Steve opened the door and saw the PI there and Steve reaction to it. Last nite episode was Ok not as good as other ones it was just average but it has bits of everything, it did not have too much like action or pursuits but I guess not every episode has to be that way as long as the action remains thru the entire season. Yesterday episode was more Kamekona centric episode. I felt sorry for the big guy but at the end we all know he has a big heart I did not know who Summer Glau was and still do not know who she is. It was funny the bantering between Steve and Danny and this time Dannys ranting was toned down which was good. There were other funny moments too. Doris resurfaced again and it seem you cant fool her, she is always at the defensive for sure she was trained assassin like Steve she does not trust anyone. I like Treat Williams performance but like Maryp said I agree he was not very credible as a PI . But she can be annoying for sure. I mean there has to be a moment where she knows that not everything is how she plans to be. Cont..

This was just ok with me, good but not up to most of this season. I also hope they end the Doris story line soon. Maybe when Joe White shows up later this season they will get married and move to Japan. I'm trying to keep an open mind about Catherine because I like Michelle Borth, but it's 2/3rds of the season and it seams to me that they really don't know what to do with her. Still overall a very enjoyable season so far.

Not such a high profile episode this time around, and enjoyable hour nonetheless. I think the audience needs a rest from the intense episodes of this season. I'm with @Mrs Cleaver, I have zero idea who Summer Glau is, yet she did a solid job anyway. Im not sure if that was meant to be an Indiana jones reference in the end when Steve shoots the guy spinning the knife, but thats what I immediately thought. All around an average episode for me.

Not the best epi for me. I did enjoy Kamekono's soft side and that the entire crew was present at some point or another. But I don't like Doris and her condescending attitude. Would you trust your mother if she returned after a 20 yr. disappearance w/out a reason?? Can't wait for her storyline to end for good. I laughed at Treat William's PI character being named Mick! Love him and loved Moonlight! Some cute moments but after last weeks epic storyline, this one paled in comparison.

Mrs-cleaver

Another good episode. No idea who Summer Glau is/was but she did a good job. Another possible love interest for Chin, agreed. But I didn't have a ton of interest in the Fight Club Crime scenerio.
It was the "other stuff" I liked about this epi. Mom is annoying. But once you accept that(sort of like you have to with some of your own relatives)she gets easier to take, at least she has for me. It WAS funny to see her making Treat Williams chase her thru the grocery store & then buy her lunch. "How are the looms?" she purrs & you KNOW she KNOWS all about this guy. Steve taking the guy down with his garden gnome-Chucky, Dan's "You are on Shrimp Truck Lockdown" & Steve shooting the guy coming at him with the knife were classic moments. Still love Steve & Cath (know many don't but I do)he gets so goofy cute around her.

I think they should retire the character of Steve's Mom. She is so annoying. I knew she was onto Steve's little plan from the beginning. At least Danny wasn't so whiney this week.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Episode 16 Quotes

Mick Logan: You told me to keep an eye on your mother.
Steve McGarrett: An eye, not a hand, not any other body part.

Kid, you don't need a P.I., you need a therapist.
