Well, they can't all be winners.

After two episodes filled with exciting revelations, Pretty Little Liars slows things down with "Dead to Me." Much of tonight's focus was on Spencer's worsening downward spiral, while there was very little progress on the A-team and Ali's murder

While focusing on the characters and their lives (as the show did tonight) can add a lot of dimension and deeper significance to the events, it can also be quite contrary to the point of the series: solving the mystery. In other words, it's great for fans of the characters, but frustrating for those of us who just want some answers. 

The most helpful revelation involved Emily and a hypnotherapy session. Emily is finally dealing with the fallout from killing Nate after receiving a French postcard from A that basically called her a murderer (and it does sound much prettier in French). As most therapists know, hypnotherapy can be tricky, especially because of the ambiguous nature of memories and memory recall.

Of course, Emily's mind conflates two memories into one. She thinks she killed Ali because of her first vision, but returning to the cemetery reminds her that the memory was actually of the night that Ali's body was stolen from her grave. Emily saw a hooded A-figure (Toby?) and a blonde in the red coat. I didn't really believe Emily could've killed Ali. Mostly cause this show loves red herrings!

We already know that Emily was with Jenna and possibly Holden (or someone with that mysterious party stamp) that night, but who did she see at the grave? Could Mona have sneaked out of Radley that early on?

Hanna finally articulated the question the rest of us were thinking: Could the girl in the red coat be Ali? They just re-interred Ali's body and said their goodbyes again, but is there more to the story of her death? With this show, the answer is definitely yes.

Emily's assertion that the girl in the red coat is probably the one in charge is something we kind of already knew. The red-coated girl has been hanging around a lot since Mona was sent away, so it makes sense that she would be the one calling the shots. In terms of Pretty Little Liars shockers, this one was weak.

Most of the episode just made me really frustrated with Spencer. #PoorSpencer may be trending, but I'm definitely not following. I feel very bad for her because she finally realized that Toby isn't who she thought he was. He probably didn't mean all the wonderful things he wrote in those cards. Because he's on the A-team!

I have sympathy for her up to a point, but why hasn't she told the girls yet?!? Instead of helping her friends protect themselves, she's moody, withdrawn and vicious. Luckily she's directing her anger at deserving subjects. Mona's crack about Spencer being "off her A-game" may serve to push her over the edge (as we saw in the promos for next week) because it definitely rubbed her the wrong way. And she's suddenly super upset with Ali.

I've never thought Ali was someone the girls should be so concerned with because she seemed like a pretty awful person, but Spencer seems to be taking it out on the wrong DiLaurentis. Telling Jason about Ali's supposed pregnancy was reckless and petty. They don't even know if it's true or if Wilden really is the father. Emily was right when she said that Spencer just wants everyone to feel her pain. When is someone finally going to confront her about her crazy behavior?

In other developments, Ezria fans might have to deal with another obstacle to a reunion for their favorite couple. Executive producer Oliver Goldstick didn't paint a rosy picture of their future, especially with Wes's appearance. There was definitely some major flirting going on, and Aria told Hanna she does think he's cute. Would a Wes-Aria couple really be such a bad thing?

Haleb fans were treated to an inordinate amount of screen time this week. I was definitely worried for Caleb while watching him avoid facing the rejection of his father's family. Caleb's family drama definitely makes him the kid of tortured teen that attracts both Hanna and Liars fans. But I would have liked to see a little more A-progress instead of spending so much time with them rummaging through boxes.

I do have one errant thought. What do you think Mona meant when she said she could never really repay Dr. Sullivan for what she did? Did the doctor do more than conveniently disappear in Pretty Little Liars Season 2?
