The Following Review: A House Divided

at . Comments

If Joe Carroll had a Twitter account he would probably have the most followers. Because, after "The Fall," it seems like they are simply everywhere.

Who isn't on Team Crazy Killer?!?

Out, Alive

Ryan Hardy crashed Emma, Paul and Jacob's kidnapping party, turning a situation the trio used to have under control into a tense police standoff that ultimately led to the breaking of their little fellowship.

Even as a hostage, Ryan still managed to have the upper hand, cleverly getting under his enemies' skin and pissing them off while they scrambled around trying to figure out what to do.

It was enjoyable seeing Kevin Bacon take the usually dark and frowny-faced Ryan and deliver some quips with a smirk, mocking the relationships of the trio, and even questioning their abilities to make decisions on their own. He was on fire and it was great seeing the group squirm.

But who the heck is Roderick?

This mysterious "name," supposedly taken from Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" (although, my money's on "Diary of Wimpy Kid") has enough power to call the shots and send in more followers to save the trio.

And yet the trio was broken, leaving Paul shot, Emma gone with Joey and Jacob confused and still not having killed anyone. Might this be the first crack in Joe's plan? Would Jacob and Paul stick with the following's work or will they be out to take revenge on Emma who abandoned them?

And did Emma really love Jacob at all or was she simply into manipulating the guys in her quest to fulfill her concept of power and choice?

It was interesting. Agent Parker tried to find a way to connect with Emma, as flashbacks - including a flashback within a flashback - revealed Debra's own part in a cult.

It was creepy watching her as a young child be offered up to the cult leader by her parents and I'm not surprised she left. Perhaps that's what makes her such an expert on cults and hunting down Joe.

But that last shot of her pulling out the necklace that contained the symbol for her original cult? Did that mean that maybe she's still more connected than we - or even she - wants to believe? Or simply recognition that her past has never left her?

I'm still a bit wary of her as the so-called good guy, although it was a rather revealing backstory for her character.

The only part that seemed more ridiculous and took away from the tension in the standoff was Claire in the secret lair of Charlie the admirer. I know she was desperate to do anything to see her kid, but did she really think that she would get to see him? And was she really that surprised that someone had been following her?

On top of that, Charlie seemed like a complete crazy person, slamming his head and feeling impure because of kissing her. Where does Joe find these people?

And as much as Joe is a chilling villain, I want to see him do more than sit down in prison and tell whoever is listening that the next chapter in the story is about to begin. I know he's the leader and his followers carry out the commands, but I'd love to see him in action at some point.

After all, it looks like Ryan's doing a lot of the killing and running around out of the two major characters. I'm sure Ryan would love a break to give his heart a rest, but when you're hunting sociopaths, there's never any time for that.

I'm still interested in Joe's big plan and the episodes continue to be heavy on the suspense and drama. Plus, with more and more followers coming out of the wood works, I'm definitely curious as to what's next for The Following.

come on seriously ryan hardy was so close, so close to getting joey! FU JOE! i thought that guy who has joey's mom is roderick anyhow i really wanted paul DEAD but i don't think he will make it in the next episode. Emma is a BITCH haha she left jacob and paul for dead and she's just using them. LOVE how ryan was getting inside they're minds messing with them to try and turn against each other!

Hey, pickers of nits, it is entertainment and better than most shows. It's way more exciting than my life to be sure.
I get engrossed in the story I guess because I jumped when the local cop shot the good FBI agent, forgetting about the Kevlar. I WISH Hardy would have popped Emma whose picture is in the dictionary next to the word sociopath. She is morally bankrupt with no soul whatsoever and no redeeming qualities.
And if you all really want to pick a nit or two, how long has it been since Hardy has been to the shooting range? Talking about shooting out tires and such....he had had time to train his gun on the phony cop and might have been a little lucky. How long since his last drink? How steady are his hands?
Just a thought.
Still, it's a don't-miss show.

I think we have already met "Roderick" . We just don't know it yet.

I really do like the show but please that woman emma needs to go, she's getting on my nerves. And Joey needs to be reunited with his mother once and for all.

ok i like the show but REALLY ? All law enforcement agencies are there andveryone basically gets away ... REALLY ?? Sorry but that was just over the top unbelievable , almost as much as Claire seriously going with some crazy guy her sociopath hubby sent.
This is the first episode to rub me the wrong way.

I, for one, enjoy the show for what it is... Something different. Yes there is some predictability but it is TV. I think the writers are wringing a lot of suspense out of 43 minutes each week, and I will keep coming back to finish up the story. I only hope they come up with a creepy and well-connected and well thought out story as this one with Poe, Joe, and Co. I am loving Kevin Bacon on my TV each week!

I too liked Ryan messing with the trio.
I think Emma has a larger role in all of this that we have yet to see.
I thought from the moment we saw Parker that she was a little fishy, I still do. I also thought Weston was a part of the cult but now I do not think he is.
I knew the female cop was part of it. Roderick sure has lots of power if he was able to accomplish what he did in the short amount of time.

Honestly, I gave this show a big chance and kept coming back in hopes it would get better. After last night's episode, the only word that keeps popping into my head is LAME! There was no surprise that local cop was a "follower". Pretty obvious from last week. FBI HRT guys just let a bunch of unknowns into their perimeter. I guess all the snipers are followers too. That would also explain how Emma makes it out the back with Joey without getting drilled between the eyes. Oh, and two fully tac'ed-out HRT guys allow a potential Tango to not only approach them from behind, but then allow him to continue walking toward them after verbal instructions are given where he then drops them both with a suppressed pistol. Wow. I sit in disbelief that anyone read this script and said, "Yeah, that sounds good, roll with it." And of course everyone gets away passing straight through the police road blocks that were reportedly in place. Oh and Joe's lawyer who has been blatantly abetting criminal activity isn't arrested. I'm sure there's more, but my brain is still recuperating the whole "FBI agent in charge is warped-minded cult baby most likely a follower herself" plot line. I like Kevin Bacon, I like Annie Perisse, but I'm done with this show.

If Hardy shot out the tires and the gang was rounded up, what would happen next week? IT'S JUST TV PEOPLE!!! The writers are not stupid... they are just keeping us going for 13 weeks. Enjoy the story and see how this plays out. Just watching Kevin Bacon's amazing acting is enough. "I'm still going to snap his neck" was hilarious. And all of you out there saying that you have had enough and won't watch again, let me guess, it is still programmed to record on your DVR and you will still be glued to your set next week. If you didn't then what would you have to complain about come Tuesday???
