The Mentalist Review: Poker Anyone?

at . Comments

There seems to be a poker theme in The Mentalist season 5 - and "Red in Tooth and Claw" kept it going. With this many bluffs and turns, who needs Red John... or is it all just a metaphor for the game the infamous serial killer has been playing with Patrick Jane?

There were so many wonderfully funny and mildly flirty moments tonight that I hope I remember them all.

Rigsby's Class Trip

First, who would have guessed that Lisbon would pass out over flesh eating bugs? She's probably witnessed hundreds of dead bodies in various stages of decomposition but the bugs were particularly gross. The best part was the Patrick went to catch her as she fell. I don't think he even saw that one coming.

Jane did a great job of dissecting the subconscious of the scientists based on what they chose to study. As he told the doctor in one of many great The Mentalist quotes

Nobody picks what they dedicate their life to by accident. It says something. | permalink

From the dark thoughts of primates to the tenaciousness of the woodpecker to... moths? Deciding to spend your life studying moths should have been a dead giveaway but then again I've always been annoyed by those particular flying creatures.

Paul killed LInda over a moth. Yes, I know it was about his career and losing his job and blah, blah, blah, but he stabbed a women in the neck to steal her moth! That's simply pathetic.

Linda's colleagues were all out for themselves. Megan enjoyed watching her pain, Paul was insanely jealous of her success and Sonya was only happy about Linda's successes because she felt it made her look good. Linda worked with some really horrific human beings.

I've always loved it when Jane visits his memory palace and this was no exception. It's one of those quirky Janeisms that I've grown to enjoy.

I also loved that Jane brought everyone gifts from the museum shop, but did he bring something back for Lisbon? The gifts sparked one of the funniest conversations between Rigsby and Cho that we've ever witnessed.

Rigsby: How can you like Triceratops more than T-Rex?
Cho: T-Rex are losers. Little arms. It's chicken with teeth. | permalink

And it only got better with Cho calling out Rigsby on his feelings for Grace. Cowards don't get to say goodbye when they want. If Rigsby wants the girl it's time to man up. Of course the best he could do in that moment was watch Cho walk away and mutter…

Rigsby: You date pregnant hookers and your dinosaur eats grass. | permalink

I couldn't stop laughing.

Even with all of that, the best was yet to come. I found it ironic that Jane put on his white hat and rode to the rescue to get Bertram to authorize the funding for Grace's White Hat training. He's always had a soft spot for her.

Then Jane used his wedding ring to ward off the doctor's advances and it's not the first time he's done that. I suppose keeping that ring on comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the best scene of the night was having Jane challenge Lisbon to some poker using gummy dinosaurs. Any fans of Castle would remember a similar scene from season one, but it's taken Jane and Lisbon to season five to get to that level of flirting although it makes it no less fun to watch.

Here's to more funny, flirty episodes of The Mentalist in our near future.

continued: battle we're going to come out on top of. Also last year, we found out in March that the show was renewed, so if it gets renewed we'll likely know sooner rather than later. If it's not brought back, we won't know until sometime around May. The other wildcard is if CBI just decides to cut back on their dramas next year which is possible. One of CSI NY, Mentalist and Good Wife are getting the axe, if golden boy is renewed make that 2 and if CBS decides to cut back on dramas which has happened before it also means 2.

@KM: The ratings aren't the problem, this is about on par with what CSI Miami had in season 9 in its time slot(probably actually better now) and they got renewed. The Mentalist also consistently has better ratings than the Good Wife in the 18-49 range(which is the ONLY one that matters) which gets renewed every year and will get the same treatment again next yr barring something really unexpected. The ratings are good enough to keep the show on, the issue in many ways stems around the syndication deal and how its Warner Bros and not CBS that gets alot of the money. The show just doesn't have that much incentive to spend so much money making a show it doesn't get that much money back from. Hopefully this doesn't come down to Mentalist vs Good Wife and CSI NY and Golden Boy aren't brought back. With the Mentalist's syndication issue, the Good Wife's awards they get nominated for and CBS's pure infatuation with the show to keep renewing it as its pet despite bad ratings, thats not a battle we're going to win.

I second everything you said Ace, we'll have to wait until May to know what'll happen with the show. I'd be so gutted if it were to end. PLEASE DONT DO THAT!!!!!

Initial numbers for Mentalist are down 21% from its last episode 3 weeks ago. DVR numbers will be late arriving this week. Maybe they will offer a boost? Legitimately some drop is expected on holiday weekends, and all Sunday night was down. CBS shows in Eastern/Central also suffer from late starts due to golf. The Mentalist needs an upswing to the 2.0 score, it scored a 1.5/4 for the desirable 18-49 demographic and 9.18 million viewers. Later this week they'll know if its numbers are improved or not due to the DVR numbers. I enjoyed the episode over all.

You know, after looking at the ratings and last night ep, I am beginning to think that they might wrap it up this show this season. This on again off again schedule combined with it being on Sundays is making me very nervous. It did have a different feel last night. Loved the Jisbon, Cho/Rigsby scenes, but it was different. I just don't know what to think anymore. I feel like I am in limbo and I think the writers/producers feel the same way and are not sure what kind of eps. to write. Like they have no direction because they don't know if they have a future next year. I don't know, but I am kind of feeling down. Wish that we had at least got the promo scene with Lisbon fainting. Just seeing Jane go for her wasn't enough.

Kate I totally agree that they hinted at it, what I meant was saying out loud what they thought. Of course it was obvious they still had feeling for each other but Cho never said anything all this time, or not that I can remember.

@mimi I have to disagree that they haven't shown the Rigsby/Van Pelt relationship for seasons - they've always hedged around it and hinted at there still being something simmering between them. It was unfinished business after all - they were forced apart really, whether Van Pelt ended it or not. It'd be nice if they got together again but that would probably be at the end of the series too unless one of them wanted to leave the show before then, then I guess it'd be perfect for them to reconnect romantically and that character transfer elsewhere. Sounds like a great character based episode - perhaps the calm before the storm? Touch base with where the characters are at before all hell breaks loose? We'll see.

Good television is hard to find (as is a faithful audience) and it makes me wonder why CBS continues to ignore the fans and have this show and for that fact The Good Wife after whatever program they have on be it football, or awards shows, or for whatever reason pushing this show into later in the evening or just preempting it altogether. CBS continues to be my favorite channel and I look forward to their programming but skipping episodes and having it come in later in the evening is just playing roulette with this great show, even though we are fans, there is a limit to everyone’s patience, I have heard people say “oh they kept moving it and then it wasn’t on, I couldn’t find it, so I just gave up. Are you listening CBS?

Meant to say please put back on week night. My keyboard sticks. Love this show

I love this show. Please put it back on a weee night.

Bertram's suppose to be this real smooth player but he loses a couple of hands of poker and he has to bum everybody else out.
