The Mentalist Review: Poker Anyone?

at . Comments

There seems to be a poker theme in The Mentalist season 5 - and "Red in Tooth and Claw" kept it going. With this many bluffs and turns, who needs Red John... or is it all just a metaphor for the game the infamous serial killer has been playing with Patrick Jane?

There were so many wonderfully funny and mildly flirty moments tonight that I hope I remember them all.

Rigsby's Class Trip

First, who would have guessed that Lisbon would pass out over flesh eating bugs? She's probably witnessed hundreds of dead bodies in various stages of decomposition but the bugs were particularly gross. The best part was the Patrick went to catch her as she fell. I don't think he even saw that one coming.

Jane did a great job of dissecting the subconscious of the scientists based on what they chose to study. As he told the doctor in one of many great The Mentalist quotes

Nobody picks what they dedicate their life to by accident. It says something. | permalink

From the dark thoughts of primates to the tenaciousness of the woodpecker to... moths? Deciding to spend your life studying moths should have been a dead giveaway but then again I've always been annoyed by those particular flying creatures.

Paul killed LInda over a moth. Yes, I know it was about his career and losing his job and blah, blah, blah, but he stabbed a women in the neck to steal her moth! That's simply pathetic.

Linda's colleagues were all out for themselves. Megan enjoyed watching her pain, Paul was insanely jealous of her success and Sonya was only happy about Linda's successes because she felt it made her look good. Linda worked with some really horrific human beings.

I've always loved it when Jane visits his memory palace and this was no exception. It's one of those quirky Janeisms that I've grown to enjoy.

I also loved that Jane brought everyone gifts from the museum shop, but did he bring something back for Lisbon? The gifts sparked one of the funniest conversations between Rigsby and Cho that we've ever witnessed.

Rigsby: How can you like Triceratops more than T-Rex?
Cho: T-Rex are losers. Little arms. It's chicken with teeth. | permalink

And it only got better with Cho calling out Rigsby on his feelings for Grace. Cowards don't get to say goodbye when they want. If Rigsby wants the girl it's time to man up. Of course the best he could do in that moment was watch Cho walk away and mutter…

Rigsby: You date pregnant hookers and your dinosaur eats grass. | permalink

I couldn't stop laughing.

Even with all of that, the best was yet to come. I found it ironic that Jane put on his white hat and rode to the rescue to get Bertram to authorize the funding for Grace's White Hat training. He's always had a soft spot for her.

Then Jane used his wedding ring to ward off the doctor's advances and it's not the first time he's done that. I suppose keeping that ring on comes in handy from time to time.

Of course, the best scene of the night was having Jane challenge Lisbon to some poker using gummy dinosaurs. Any fans of Castle would remember a similar scene from season one, but it's taken Jane and Lisbon to season five to get to that level of flirting although it makes it no less fun to watch.

Here's to more funny, flirty episodes of The Mentalist in our near future.

@Entwife, @ Entwife, You could be right on the hug. I get thrown off balance when my better half puts his chin over my shoulder and have to steady myself. The height difference is greater between my beloved and I. Jane began the story as the tragic hero. And, tragic does not always result in death, but it does demand consequences. As I see it Jane is not considering the consequences of his choices because he is so lost in his obsession. How the universe demands he pay those consequences remains to be seen. He may end up finding himself, yet again, stripped and left with nothing but the knowledge that he is loved by a good woman. She, too, may find herself stripped. Lisbon has consequences to face too.

@Mimi It is really fun to see different sides of Patrick's personality, especially outside of the circle of people we usually see him with or as an extension of his CBI work. And with Lorelei it's really intense because he could wind up dead! I think they will bring Jane and Lisbon together. In some ways the things we've been talking about here show the path the writers are taking to get there. I would prefer it not be at the very end of the series in the very last scene! It will be a really beautiful thing and we deserve to have it fully developed and integrated into their lives over a little time.

Oh, @KM, don't say tragic hero -- they always die! We really saw Jane's imbalance this season at the end of Red Sails. Remember him sitting in his chair in the attic, must have been some pale moonlight shining in the window putting awful shadows on his ravaged face, burnt from the air bag hitting him in the face. He's in a neck brace, so even apart from the soreness of his injuries, his movements are stiff, unnatural. He's talking to Lisbon and then he looks up at her kind of sideways and smiles. He looks positively maniacal.

@KM I see Patrick's actions with Lorelei in the same light as you do. He's manipulating her, but with super caution. To me, he almost flinches around her at times. But everything he does is to keep her engaged with him on whatever level she wants so that she will lead him to Red John. In Crimson Hat, I don't think Lisbon is physically off balance. But she doesn't really hug him back either. He's caught her by surprise and probably figures he'll let go quickly. But he's so insistent and intense and hangs on so long, that she finally puts one hand on his lower shoulder, like okay, Jane, steady on. Or maybe to give him a little in return to reassure him. But I don't think she really gets what he's trying to communicate. Maybe thinks it's part of the act somehow. Maybe thinks he's over-acting lol

I will say that I think we, the audience, and eventually the team are seeing the real Patrick Jane. We're getting to see how selfish and self-absorbed he is. How he is allowing his obsession with Red John to inflict pain on others. His hands are getting bloody. He is creating a tragedy for himself and those around him. He is beginning to imbalance the universe in all the ways Red John does. He is a fallen, tragic, hero. To love him, one must love all sides.

I respectfully disagree that Jane is giving Lorelei the "real" Patrick. The nerdy unbalanced Patrick is within him, like "Paddy". It is Jane who coped with his dad, walking on egg shells to avoid being smacked. Jane is doing what most people do when they want to attract a person for any reason, he is showing her what she wants to see. When we give people what we want they are less likely to see our flaws and see that they are being hooked. We're seeing a mixture of that form of manipulation, empathy, and respectful fear. He has to play passive with her. He will play romantic suitor if that is what will get him what he wants.
Re hugs with Lisbon are usually fierce, sudden, and surprising. Lisbon looks taken by surprise, physically off balance, and wary as to the reason. She put her arms around him in Crimson Hat, part of that might have been to maintain balance as he has arched her back with his intensity. Have we seen a mutual hug?

also that's why I wonder how the writers will bring Jane's character to show his feelings to Lisbon, will he take the first step? will he wait for her to say sthg first?
even with Lorelei he was passive..
I'd love him to actually do somthing first, show his love for her, prove it to her, take the first steps, blow her socks off, sweep her off her feet!

yes I agree HC I was thinking about this the other day, how different he is with Lorelei, I got to fall in love with Jane in crimson hat, I love how laid back he is in that epi, at least with her because with the others he's himself again. The motel scene is priceless, got see to another side to him. same with the beach epi. love it!

The Mentalist Season 5 Episode 14 Quotes

Bertram's suppose to be this real smooth player but he loses a couple of hands of poker and he has to bum everybody else out.
