Ah, Huisclothes: I knew there was another ep. without the vest, couldn't remember wich one though. To me it looked like Simon Baker forgot it a home that morning and they just had to go on without it. Or - he spilled some coffee or lunch over it and the afternoon they shot the scenes without it.

@mimi oh, you're right. that's one i forgot. the one i meant was in red line the episode in the car dealership when they introduced walter mashburn. when patrick and cho return to the dealership, patrick has on a dark suit -- no vest.

in red tide, the jane character wasn't etched in stone so he took the vest off, took his shoes off and rolled his pants up. never happened until the vest came off in fugue in red in which patrick became patrick's id, i guess. and of course, in crimson hat, when patrick was reduced to a petty criminal who gets thrown in the cooler. as i've said, patrick's garb puts him in a world where the removal of the vest is tantamount to pornography for such as we, well, such as me. so powerful is this character vocabulary they've developed, we all feel it when anything changes. amazing that in red sails in the sunset, he was on the lam with lorelei but kept the vest on all the time. a guy in a cowboy hat, shades and a vest for god's sake. always thought it was weird that he knew to bring a lot of cash but didn't bother to bring a change of clothes for himself or for her. i would have brought fake passports for two.

@rationalgal I'm thinking that vest doesn't come off until it's for Lisbon either. Unless he's under the control of RJ, no telling what will be done to him if he gets taken.

Simon and Bruno picked out Jane's wardrobe as 3-piece suits for the "showmanship" vibe the vest gives. Simon hates picking out wardrobes. He and Bruno said they had one very lengthy discussion and never wanted to have one again. So it's 3-piece all the way, and nicely symbolic of Jane's hiding his core feelings. When we see that vest come off we will know something big is about to happen in which Jane will show his vulnerability (as in Crimson Hat). The only time he took it off was on that beach where he made a sand castle. But to keep it on would have been absurd, symbol or no symbol. I expect that next time it comes off it will be when he opens up to Lisbon about his feelings for her. I'd love to see that this season. Would add lots of excitement to season 6 as to where they go from there.

back to jane's attire. the shirt he wears in the pilot. the inside facing of the collar is red. noted it cause i bought one like it for my hub years ago. dries van noten, i think. perfect choice for patrick jane.
also, noticed in a recent ep that jane's pants had cuffs. does he always have cuffs? i didn't think so.

@km oh yeah. jane was pleased that he had red john back and with a soupçon of satisfaction that he was regarded as such a special nemesis. there was also a hint of "look what my life has come to. my most profound relationship is with the man who killed my family." he had the same smile on his face a few minutes later when he said "he poisoned her." their special bond was immediately demonstrated. red john was one step ahead of patrick who was one step ahead of everyone at cbi in realizing that rebecca had been poisoned.
