Simon might have a contract for that long but if CBS cancels the show, his contract is void. It all depends on renewel.
Didn't know that Bruno was developing a new show. Could be good as CBS would no doubt want it. It could be linked to a deal to keep TM on for another year. There were rumors of it having been renewed for two years at last year's "renewal confirmed status".

Simon Baker has a contract for seven years, I've read in 20 sites.

The Mentalist is not getting canceled. Their ratings are good and all the websites that forecasts which shows that are good to get renewed or canceled have it as likely to get renewed. Now having said that i've fairly confident that season six is the last season. Bruno Heller is developing a new show so that's a good sign that's he's ready to end it. I'm sure that Cbs and Bruno have been discussing this for awhile and have a plan in place. Cbs knowing it's going to end next season throws it to sundays to help The Good Wife. Also the main cast's contracts end next season.

I just thought of something. What if CBS gives a half of season to TGW and a half of season to TM? I would hate to see that, but I would take a half season over no season at all. Any thoughts?

Is it the next new ep that airs the one where they switch times with TGW? If so, I hope TM gets huge ratings. It think this might be some kind of test from CBS. I kind of think it is good that TGW doesn't have a syndication deal yet as it make it look "less desirable" then TM. (I hate to say that cause I know people like it, but I will take TM over it anyday). Of course, it comes down to money and which one CBS can make the most from, so maybe WB will make some sort of deal to give TM AT LEAST one more year.
continued: battle we're going to come out on top of. Also last year, we found out in March that the show was renewed, so if it gets renewed we'll likely know sooner rather than later. If it's not brought back, we won't know until sometime around May. The other wildcard is if CBI just decides to cut back on their dramas next year which is possible. One of CSI NY, Mentalist and Good Wife are getting the axe, if golden boy is renewed make that 2 and if CBS decides to cut back on dramas which has happened before it also means 2.
@KM: The ratings aren't the problem, this is about on par with what CSI Miami had in season 9 in its time slot(probably actually better now) and they got renewed. The Mentalist also consistently has better ratings than the Good Wife in the 18-49 range(which is the ONLY one that matters) which gets renewed every year and will get the same treatment again next yr barring something really unexpected. The ratings are good enough to keep the show on, the issue in many ways stems around the syndication deal and how its Warner Bros and not CBS that gets alot of the money. The show just doesn't have that much incentive to spend so much money making a show it doesn't get that much money back from. Hopefully this doesn't come down to Mentalist vs Good Wife and CSI NY and Golden Boy aren't brought back. With the Mentalist's syndication issue, the Good Wife's awards they get nominated for and CBS's pure infatuation with the show to keep renewing it as its pet despite bad ratings, thats not a battl

I second everything you said Ace, we'll have to wait until May to know what'll happen with the show. I'd be so gutted if it were to end. PLEASE DONT DO THAT!!!!!

Initial numbers for Mentalist are down 21% from its last episode 3 weeks ago. DVR numbers will be late arriving this week. Maybe they will offer a boost? Legitimately some drop is expected on holiday weekends, and all Sunday night was down. CBS shows in Eastern/Central also suffer from late starts due to golf. The Mentalist needs an upswing to the 2.0 score, it scored a 1.5/4 for the desirable 18-49 demographic and 9.18 million viewers. Later this week they'll know if its numbers are improved or not due to the DVR numbers.
I enjoyed the episode over all.

You know, after looking at the ratings and last night ep, I am beginning to think that they might wrap it up this show this season. This on again off again schedule combined with it being on Sundays is making me very nervous. It did have a different feel last night. Loved the Jisbon, Cho/Rigsby scenes, but it was different. I just don't know what to think anymore. I feel like I am in limbo and I think the writers/producers feel the same way and are not sure what kind of eps. to write. Like they have no direction because they don't know if they have a future next year. I don't know, but I am kind of feeling down. Wish that we had at least got the promo scene with Lisbon fainting. Just seeing Jane go for her wasn't enough.

Kate I totally agree that they hinted at it, what I meant was saying out loud what they thought. Of course it was obvious they still had feeling for each other but Cho never said anything all this time, or not that I can remember.

@mimi I have to disagree that they haven't shown the Rigsby/Van Pelt relationship for seasons - they've always hedged around it and hinted at there still being something simmering between them. It was unfinished business after all - they were forced apart really, whether Van Pelt ended it or not. It'd be nice if they got together again but that would probably be at the end of the series too unless one of them wanted to leave the show before then, then I guess it'd be perfect for them to reconnect romantically and that character transfer elsewhere.
Sounds like a great character based episode - perhaps the calm before the storm? Touch base with where the characters are at before all hell breaks loose? We'll see.

Good television is hard to find (as is a faithful audience) and it makes me wonder why CBS continues to ignore the fans and have this show and for that fact The Good Wife after whatever program they have on be it football, or awards shows, or for whatever reason pushing this show into later in the evening or just preempting it altogether. CBS continues to be my favorite channel and I look forward to their programming but skipping episodes and having it come in later in the evening is just playing roulette with this great show, even though we are fans, there is a limit to everyone’s patience, I have heard people say “oh they kept moving it and then it wasn’t on, I couldn’t find it, so I just gave up”. Are you listening CBS?

also now we know how she made her way out of the show because of her pregnancy, I wondered how they were gonna bring that out and also I'm quite surprised they are digging out their old relationship, they havent talked or mentioned it for seasons and suddenly Cho comes up with it.
I wonder if she'll come back before it ends and I hope she's got nothing to do with RJ and wonder if at one point she'll get back together with Rigsby.

The interactions between the characters reminded me of the early episodes (1st season, I'm thinking, but maybe 2nd season as well) -- so I thought of it as more of a throwback than something new. Back before the heavy RJ story arcs, hints dropped, and all, the cases were, if not lighter, more of a framework for the team's interactions. I liked/like that -- but then I've personally never been much of a fan of mini-series or long drawn-out-over-multi-seasons story arcs!

It was an excellent episode. I don't think Lisbon will ever beat Jane at poker. I'm glad Jane helped Grace go to her advanced computer class. The show has always been about the team and their interactions and I love it. I enjoyed Rigsby and Cho and their dinasaur argument. Jane was great figuring all out. Everyone should stick with the show and keep watching.

I also was very disappointed at this, I thought we'd see more of tha fainting scene and like you I was like?? didnt we see her faint in the promo shoot? anyway I saw it coming when the guy opened the tank, I knew they'd cut right after the fainting for the Mentalist theme song.
I don't think he turned the woman down because he wanted to play poker with Lisbon, he just didn't fancy her or he's still the same, cuts himself out.
yes another two weeks, it's ridiculous!

I think they like to play a lot with our nerves...in the promo of the episode they show Lisbon passing out and Jane trying to catch her...well? well? well what? Nothing! we got nothing more than we could see in the promo. Even less than there is in it: we don't even see Lisbon fainting anymore, just Jane. Ok,fine, I'll get over it...It's just that I had imagined/hoped a whole different scene :-D.
I like the fact that Jane pretended he was married to turn that woman down. I'm sure we'll all agree why he did this right? He prefers playing cards with his Lison...;-)
@mimi: Yes I agree, it was strange seeing Lison lying on the couch! This said,it also shows that they're not really "killing" themselves at work LOL: lying on the couch, buying dinosaures, visiting museums, playing cards...wow this must be very tireing at the end of the day ;-)
Tell me if I'm wrong: will we have to wait two more weeks again to see the next episode? As Lisbon says it at the end of 5x13, and with that

I liked the show also because of the interactions between the characters. I loved the bertram/jane interaction and also rigsby/cho's argument over rigsby love for VP, made me chuckle.
The dino metaphor was fun,it definitely added to the show.
What stuck out for me was how Lisbon was different, isnt it the first time we saw her lying on a couch? it was like they had swapped places, her and Jane, she sounded more laid back than usual I think.
The show was shorter than usual and the crime solved way before the end as well to give room for more interactions between the characters. The last scene was good, I never have enough of them being together.
The only thing I miss is Jane's curls!

I loved tonight's show! It is so interesting to see how Patrick is somehow changing in front of our eyes into someone much more serious, someone we do not know that well. He seams to be absent minded, lost in his thougts or even sad as if becoming more true to his inner self or maybe suspecting something, or even both. Lisbon on the other hand, totally oblivious to his transformation, maybe be even too cheerful is changing somehow ever so slightly into Patrick and shockingly starting to lay down on his couch, while he is sits at a table holding papers in his hands. The last scene with the cards when Patrick implies winning over her might be nothing, or not. Definitely, something is going on!

THIS is how you do a perfect standalone episode. Tons of character interaction (Jane and Cho, Cho and Rigsby, Jane and Lisbon), a fun new world & case, the carrying on of a longer storyline (the poker), return of a favourite guest (Bertram), lots of character development/moments and much more. Loved it.
