The Big Bang Theory will soon welcome a television legend.

Six-time Emmy Award winner Bob Newhart has signed on to portray Professor Proteon, the former host of Sheldon's favorite science series from many years ago.

Show sources tell TV Line that Sheldon will track down Newhart's character online and learn that he's available for parties and events. Naturally, he therefore invites to "professor" over to his home.

The Big Bang Theory Season 6 is off for the next two weeks, while this episode will air on May 2.

It was ER, not Emergency. Getting them confused, but they both start with "E" and deal with hospitals. His character committed suicide, I believe.

so can not wait!!!!!!!!! so like bob newhart

Mr. Newhart is a clean comedian and a good actor. Looking forward to seeing him return to television.

Never heard of him.

Any appearance by Bob Newhart is a good thing, but this sounds like it could be especially cute. That man is just adorable. His appearance as a man going blind on Emergency a few years back shows that he's actually also a good actor. Playing a Mr. Wizard-type? Gold.

TBBT Quotes

Penny: Hey, Sheldon, did you change your Wi-Fi password again?
Sheldon: Yes, it's "Penny, get your own Wi-Fi." No spaces.

Sheldon: Why do you have the Chinese character for "soup" tattooed on your right buttock?
Penny: It's not "soup," it's "courage."
Sheldon: No it isn't. But I suppose it does take courage to demonstrate that kind of commitment to soup.
Penny: How'd you see it? You said you wouldn't look.
Sheldon: Sorry. As I told you, the hero always peeks.
