Castle Review: A Mob and a Mistress

by at . Comments

Well, well. Who knew that Seamus Dever was such the man?

Castle aired the "The Wild Rover" this week, an installment that showed us a different side of Detective Ryan, a side that was pretty amazing to watch. Let’s discuss, shall we?

Shocked Reactions

Full of Dough. After the death of a baker involved in the Irish mob, Ryan goes back undercover as Fenton O’Connell. Turns out, he had been undercover in the mob for 14 months. He had a girlfriend and was seriously deep in the crew. He ran out after the Feds started to close in and seven years later he is back there.

Things aren’t too easy for our favorite Irish cop. Doesn’t matter, though, Ryan is a total badass and takes the whole crew down.

As much as I love watching the relationship buildup and the fun weekly cases of the standard Castle episodes, I loved this episode even more. I often think that Espo and Ryan don’t get the screen time they deserve. But maybe that’s why when they do get an hour to be the center, they excel at it. Remember when Espo saved Kate on Castle Season 4? Dever killed it in this installment, proving that he is one cop not to be messed with.

Seriously, the makeover back into his Fenton ways... hot stuff, Seamus.

Daddy Time. On top of Ryan being the man all hour, he’s finally getting what he wants: a baby! Jenny and Kevin are pregnant and they couldn’t have been cuter. Plus, it’s always nice to have Dever’s real life wife pop by.

Side Notes

  • Gotta love the partnership between Ryan and Espo. Could possibly be my favorite bromance on TV right now. Anyone else agree?
  • Who wants to see Ryan with that haircut all the time?? Me!
  • How hilarious was it when they were trying to pronounce Siobhan?
  • Ryan also delivered one of the best Castle quotes from the hour: “See you on the other side, brother.” Anyone else have instant flashbacks to Desmond from Lost

Well, TV Fanatics, the time is here. Deep into the fifth season, Castle will be celebrating its 100th episode next week with “The Lives of Others.” It’s bound to be amazing, so make sure you are ready to discuss after. For some sneak peak info, check out the TV Fanatic exclusive.

So, what did you think of “The Wild Rover?” Did you enjoy the time spent on Ryan or do you want it back to your regular Castle episodes? Check back later this week for the Castle Round Table and make sure to hit up the comments and let us know what you thought.

I totally agree with the reviewer...this was an AWESOME episode, and I gotta agree with the Seamus Dever as a total HOTTIE with the cool haircut and the bad-ass attitude...yummmmmmmm. I kept marveling at how intensely blue his eyes were, and how even his posture changed when he became Fenton. He had "swagger" and steel in his whole body. And I loved that scene at the end where he called on all his friends and co workers to come out and help him, and Castle was all like "I forgot my vest" LOL! That was such a "cowardly lion" moment, and yet so perfect for his character. I can hardly wait for the 100th episode. This show is just the best, always full of great stories, laughter and tears. Long may it reign on TV!

THE STORY LINE WAS SUSPENSEFUL AND SHOWED ANOTHER INSIGHT INTO ANOTHER CAST MEMBER, VERY ENJOYABLE . ONE QUESTION ABOUT SOMETHING THAT I HAVE NOTICED IN LAST FEW EPISODES. BECKET HAS STARTED DRESSING AND WEARING HER HAIR IN A FASHION LIKE SHE HAD IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SERIES IN '09. IT MAY BE MORE REALISTIC BUT I LIKE HER MORE FEMININE. OTHERWISE THERE ROLES START TO REVERSE, SO THAT SHE IS "BUTCH" AND CASTLE IS A "WOOSIE". (I KNOW I AM "OLD FASHIONED").

I don't know where to start first the writers are on a roll the last three show have been all five star show the writers, actors, the crew who put everything together have been super. Castle going where every he has to to get his Daughter.and Kate trying to help him The next one lots of twist and turns, drama, humor. Kate is going out to that Cabin but Castle won't let her go alone Kate out in the woods Castle with a Gun and then loses it but bops the killer over the head with the Holy water bottle. Then their up in his Loft and she goes into the bedroom with his glass of ice cubes and says Castle your ice is melting!!Ha! Ha!Now last nights show was Ryan's we learned alot about his past and it was a great show lots of drama great actors, writers and the end was super he's going to be a daddy what a ending!! I would love to see a Lanie show see her back round. I think Castle shows are the best i have 60 shows I saved on my DVR I'am missing a few but i will get them on the reruns on TNT.

Loved finally getting a Ryan focused episode!

Some Ryan back story was interesting...and well-done. Sioban was a cutie. Also, nice ending for Ryan and his wife!! A Lanie/Espo episode would be sweet! A bit more interaction between Castle and Beckett...sweet!

Another well done episode! Dang...maybe the writers read this column? No complaints....you may all gasp in unison now....

I absolutely loved the episode. It was nice to see Ryan finally get his chance to shine. I feel like there have been a couple of Espo centered storylines, but never Ryan. Hopefully, Lanie will get her episode next.

I loved this show but I haven't seen one I didn't like so maybe that is faint praise. I really liked seeing the other side of another character and I hope they do that with all of the regulars. It was nice and makes for a little more personal experience. I do agree with Keith (above) that the dumbing-down of Castle is a little cliche but that is to be expected due to his new love life when everyone acts silly. The two-part show when the kidnapping of Castle's daughter took place showed that he really isn't a silly man.

This show just keeps on getting better and better. There are no minor characters, everyone has an important role to play. I always miss Martha and Alexis but they get their times to shine, too. Ryan was awesome. His character was so nuanced, the tough thug, the regret over the hurt he had caused, the really smart player. It's wonderful that there's always humor too, plus romance but never overdone. Well played, everyone. Well written, too, that goes without saying. Can't imagine ever getting tired of Castle.

Great episode! Did anyone else catch at the very beginning of the opening scene the camera shows a cake that says "Happy 99th" on it? I agree I didn't pay much attention to Castle's Jordan secret, it was unnecessary to the episode as a whole. This was Seamus Deaver's day all the way. Calling out the team at the end was big Gold and captured the essence of each character succinctly - "Javi is ex-special forces, you don't wanna draw on him".. "Beckett yea she's pretty bad-ass I wouldn't mess with her either"; then Castle - "I forgot my vest!" Classic.
