Hawaii Five-0 Review: Bang Stick

at . Comments

Is there any kind of ancient philosophical concept that describes the state of finding a TV episode to be convoluted as all get-out, but also supremely entertaining?

Because if there is, I would like to use it to describe my experience watching "Hoa Pili (Close Friend)." No? Nothing? Maybe there's a phrase in French. They're good with that stuff. Look it up and get back to me.

Suffering a Set Back

Despite a confusing middle section (which led me to fill a notebook page with sentence fragments like "wait which fisherman whaaa"), "Hoa Pili (Close Friend)" was a fun, dynamic cartoon, complete with a shark that kinda looked like Bruce from Finding Nemo and an actual cargo container dropped on someone's head, Wile E. Coyote style.

It's rare that an episode's weakest asset is its actual plot, but that was the case tonight - every moment that wasn't devoted to moving the main story forward, from the red herring opener (Ryan!), to the Kamekona helicopter subplot, to the sharp Hawaii Five-0 quotes, to the great Magnum P.I. nod at the end, was killer.

But the moments devoted to finding the actual killer were often the least compelling. The real forces behind the murders - and, thus, the real stakes behind the murders - were revealed too late in the game to get heavily invested in the outcome. Though I am well acquainted with the grand tradition of the Hawaii Five-0 Mid-Episode Twist, this one had at least two twists too many for me.

I do have to wonder if this was obvious to the writers because the gloriously choreographed, kinetic fight scene in the shipyard (and, you know, the whole cargo container thing) seemed specifically timed and designed to whip wandering minds back to full attention. And it did capture my full attention; the fight scene between the team and the drug gang was one of the best in weeks, and led to the part of my notebook page filled with nothing but exclamation points. It was brief, but it was beautiful to behold.

Leilani's reappearance was a welcome return in a season that's been dropping ongoing plot threads left and right. Lindsay Price has a warm presence, and I hope she makes some bigger appearances in the few remaining episodes of the season. I like the idea of her and Chin together (although I kind of always root for Steve Sanders's baby mama).

This episode was a tribute to all the things Hawaii Five-0 does right that have nothing to do with the solving of actual crimes: character chemistry, gorgeous action sequences and a warm-hearted sense of humor. And, honestly, it was more than enough. There are a lot of crime/ action shows on TV. But baby, I'm here for the carguments.

What did you think of the plot twists? Did you love the fight sequence at the end? Have you ever personally found a barrel of tainted Ecstasy on the beach (if so, please explain)?

I quit watching this season when the girlfriend started showing up regularly. She doesn't add anything to the character cadre--she's too extraneous to have a specific place or fill a need. I just had extra time today so I watched it online and suddenly remembered why I used to have a real problem about what to watch on Monday nights.

One complaint about the episode. Catherine in her bikini. MB is a great actress and is so beautiful but not liking her body too much. She is flat as a board. Sorry to say. Please no more bikinis or short shorts for her. Give her something substantial to do or just give her some cameos like Max.

I was LOVING the Magnum PI references and music at the end, hilarious! And of course I always love the car arguments that are a hallmark of the Danno/Steve bromance...and I adore that Danno has names for the various faces that Steve makes! Aneurysm Face, "I Know Everything" face, etc. LOVE it *and it is so true that the man makes the same faces all the time*
As far as Catherine goes, yes, they are being rather sexist having her be in skimpy outfits all the time, but they are doing it for the same reason that they have Alex O take off his shirt, because both actors are EYE CANDY and they give viewers a thrill. Alex certainly gets my motor running with his hot body and gorgeous face. But then, I think Chin and Danno are pretty hot, too. I also found the ep confusing, but with H5O, you just have to go with it.

Do we discuss a episode here or a character seen that enough in the fandom the last couple of weeks on twitter sick of it. Please don't start it here also It's fine to say if you like a certain character in a episode or not but please post also your thought about the episode. Afterall there is this site intended for. Thank You!!

Alisa Im with you on the Catherine issue. I know everyone is entitle of an opinion but I dont know why other viewers do not see what many had seen so far of Catherine. She is being used as a sex toy who happens to be the team leader gf and also who has Navy skills and hang out and not the other way around a Navy officer who happens to be an attractive lady. The writers are fault of her character is not her as an actress. She could have done so much better this season and Im sure everyone would have liked her, including me but after 19 episodes people havent seen her character had became dull and boring. I mean i am sure her Navy skills are the best ones so lets us see that and help the team with her Navy intelligence skills and show her sexy seductress side a bit less just the amount needed and do not shove it in.

it was alright.....but, could have done WITHOUT catherine walking in almost NUDE....she doesn't add anything to the show....and to be honest; i have to wonder if steve and kamekono were at HER place....because she came through a sliding glassdoor....and steve's tv is in the livingroom at HIS place. and kono isn't getting ENOUGH airtime or storylines....catherine TAKE AWAY from the core 4 of the show...and catherine is BORING....and alex looks uncomfortable in his scenes with MB. chin also NEEDS more to do...he lost his wife...and except for acouple times, it hasn't really been mentioned....i like the idea of him moving on. we need MORE of the CORE 4 ( steve, danny, chin and kono), along with danny with his daughter, and of mcdanno with grace...and the FIVE-0 team spending time together. and please WRAP UP the storyline with DORIS. alisa

I thought this episode hit almost all of the good things - so much team love and togetherness, Max and Kamekona and Charlie (all three serving a purpose independent of McG or any other main character), Chin and Kono together OUT OF THE OFFICE and Kono being amazing and BAMF and everything great. Catherine and the gratuitous bikini pan up the body camera shot? The less said about that, the better. At least her presence was short-lived this week. All in all, a really great homage to Season 1. Finally, an episode worth a rewatch!

I know what u mean "e" but the writers are sexing her character too much on this season and I dont think it has to be that way even if she is in Hawaii. A girl doesn't always have to be in a bikini, wear short shorts (I know it's Hawaii) or drive a sexy car. It just sems excessive with her and the camera work. I think she can offer more and still be attractive but hte writers do not know what they are doing with her character and it shows.

you guys are too funny re catherine. she's his girlfried! he has a house on the water in hawaii! (which they never mention, but must be worth a fortune, even if it is nothing fancy). i'd be at his house surfing or whatever every spare second too! funny episode. enjoyed everyone especially steve, as always (looking fine in that wifebeater...

Really enjoyed this ep. I love when the entire cast is on and this one was a home-run! The theme of friendship resonated throughout and who better than our crew to showcase exactly how it's done!! And they do it beautifully. The chemistry that exists between them is evident. It was a nice shift from the usual procedural, shoot-em-up. Kono & Chin being BAMF and Danny's "where's the love" was excellent but the chopper scene and the guys bopping to the Magnum theme was PRICELESS! Jeff Cadiente did an excellent job with this episode and I hope he'll do more.
