Pretty Little Liars Review: Pulling the Strings

at . Comments

Last week's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" tried to set up tonight's game-changer without giving too much away. Spencer's complete character transformation has been completed, so what does she really have to lose anymore?

Unfortunately, once she started following Mona's clues, I had a sneaking suspicion she had finally decided to take Mona up on her offer. So, I wasn't too surprised when she pulled her own black hoodie out of her pillow case.

That's not to say that "I'm Your Puppet" wasn't an entertaining episode, but lately the strings are very visible. The show is about manipulating our expectations to shock us with surprising twists and turns. However, many of us fans have gotten used to this routine and started questioning everything, as well as looking for the subtle (and not so subtle) clues.

It's beginning to feel like Pretty Little Liars will do anything to keep us on our toes...except gives us more grounded answers to our questions.

Spencer at Radley

So Spencer's joined the A-team, and this little development will definitely be a huge part of the season finale next week. Despite proclaiming that she wanted a break from everything A-related, it seems she really just wants a break from being the constant victim of A's tauntings and threats - and really who could blame her? But what does this mean for the other liars?

However, I can't get around the fact that Spencer is still being incredibly selfish, just like when she waited forever to tell her best friends about Toby. Maybe she's working another angle here, but she doesn't seem stable enough to handle much of anything. At least her quiet searching at Radley did reveal some pertinent information.

It seems like no one really trusts Wren. Things were pretty frosty between Eddie and Wren, but who's the real problem here? My money's on Wren, but Eddie is the newcomer. And just what is CeCe's role in all of this? All of the new information about CeCe indicates that she didn't have such a great friendship with Alison and may have had a lot of reasons to get rid of her.

I'm also beginning to wonder if the writers would really kill off Toby just to shock us. In the Pretty Little Liars Round Table, I said I thought it would be shame if Spencer never got to confront Toby, and that maybe Toby was just faking it. But we won't know until someone finally identifies that new body. (By the way, I thought it was a total a waste of time to have an extra "John Doe" in the morgue. Seriously, what did that accomplish?)

There was also far too much going on in this episode. Aria loses Malcolm. A sets up Jamie. Shauna keeps texting Emily. Well, maybe that last one wasn't too important. Gosh, they really are sidetracking Emily a lot, huh?

Aria finally came to a mature decision when she considered breaking up with Ezra. I'm surprised she didn't realize sooner that her presence in Malcolm's life would make him a walking target. A doesn't play fair, and I'm just glad the worst she (going by Alison apparently) did was take him to a puppet show. Ezria fans will not be happy about this one, but we should have seen it coming after Aria denied dating Ezra last week.

The whole Jamie plot may not have really helped us solve an A-mysteries, but it was sad nonetheless. The bell incident finally gave Caleb a reason to unleash years of pent up anger. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Jamie deserved it. Hanna probably doesn't even know which problem to worry about first. And seriously all these issues are making it difficult for her to focus on anything.

Wren's looking more shady too (We know what that means!!!), he'll look suspicious for a couple of episodes and then there'll be some explanation for it all and he'll disappear for half a season!

The tattoo was smeared, so it's obviously not Toby.
My money is on it being Jason. The body is of someone in their late teens or early twenties, on a show like this if it was Toby they probably would have just said someone in their late teens. Jason also disappeared a few weeks ago (similar to how Ian did) and he hasn't shown up since.
A clearly wanted Jason dead in the elevator and because they failed, they had to come back and finish the job.
I'm really hoping it isn't him though as I love Jason and I would have much preferred it to be Toby (I personally don't find him all that interesting or compelling at all, plus I'd have to say Keegan Allen is the weakest actor on the show).
Hopefully Aria and Ezra end for good. Aria is actually semi-interesting when Ezra isn't around.
Spencer joining the A team was very predictable and there are so many other ways they could have revealed it so it would be more shocking. Wren's looking more shady too (We know what that means!!!), he'll look suspicious for a couple of episodes and then we'll find out some explanation for it all and he'll disappear for half a season!

I also want the red coat to be Ali and I am interested in Spencer joining the A team even though I think there will be no going back for her. I am glad Ezra and Aria broke up because it was long overdue. I also knew A was setting up Jaime and it gave us a pissed off Caleb which was kind of sexy. Where is Noel and Jenna because I am starting to miss them.

oh and why would cece come to mona after being kicked out of college years ago when ali was alive why would she want to see mona years later?!

anyone else notice that the tattoo was smeared tobys was real and real ones dont wipe off so i think the body they found wasnt his they said it was damage to the face but dental records / dna will prove it . in the promos it looks like theres a fire and the liars find ali ( courntey /ali) in the books theres a fire and ali is seen by the girls and alis then comes home to reveal shes courtney ( actually a evil ali) so with the news reporters in season 4 maybe ali/courtney comes back

Spindae 2o

So THIS is much better than last week! Aria! Hmm THEY should cut of this story with Ezra. It's just to messy and worthless. Their scenes aren't what they were no chemistry there. Hanna. Poor girl she gets all this problems thrown against her head. Caleb was really good this week, really authentic. Em. Let her be happy for some days. And I'm tired of her believing Toby is good. Come on EM! Spencer. It was pretty obvious they are aiming for her. But I wasn't sure if they are going after A team or Crazy team. Troian did a tremendous job here. She is a player a nerdy Player but a PLAYER. AND did she take out the Malcom??? Uhhh big game. Who is RED!? So everything indicates it's CeCe, but in my mind it's Melissa Hastings.

So Spencer has crossed over to the dark side now?? Or is she the double agent? Based on next week's preview Aria knows Spence is on the A-Team so maybe that is the big reveal and the finale is going to be a huge letdown..I'm totally convinced the red coat will be revealed to be CeCe so that will definitely be boring "revelation" (remember MonA)... also why would they kill Toby off screen? His death (if he had to die at all!!) would have been finale material not this low key off screen death.. And since they refuse to show whose body is that I'm now sure its neither Toby nor Jason nor anyone important. (Maybe its Paige!!!...just hoping)

I kinda figured Jamie was set up by A. The whole switching the bell seemed way out there for him. I doubt CeCe is part of the A team. Her beef was with Alison, she never even met the girls until recently. She has no reason to torture them.

Good episode. I didn't notice if the tattoo was fake or not and I don't even have a guess if it is Toby or not because I have no idea if they would actually kill him off or not because I've seen other shows do that kill off someone who's like a main character or pretty important person so I don't know if they would do that with this show or not. Ok I've been seeing the Ezria break up coming for a while now and I'm actually kind of glad it happened but I think something will probably bring then back together hopefully not right away because aria needs to be single for awhile. Can't wait till the next episode it looks amazing.

I really hope Spencer is joining the A team to be a mole. Toby turned out to be a double agent for A. Time to turn the tables. I'm really hoping that Spencer was using her honest grief to drive her rage to convince Mona she was unstable enough to break and give in to Mona's offer. Otherwise this would be the second character we trusted to turn sides, and in such a short span of time. However, I will say that Troian Bellisario has continued to show her acting chops. I'm glad Aria had the maturity to walk away, but I wish that she had told Ezra the truth. So I feel it was not a big win for her. At least she won't be lying to the principal anymore. But do I really believe that Ezria is over? No. A was busy, and I think too busy to just have been Mona and mystery red coat. At least I hope so because then maybe Toby is still alive. Otherwise I want Keegan Allen to book a new show. Stat.

Shuffling around in Mona's old slippers isn't going to get her any better.

They don't make a loofah that scraps out the inside of your head.
