Shameless Review: A New Poster Child

at . Comments

Mandy was still trying to improve Lip’s life, Frank became a gay rights activist for domestic partnership benefits and Mickey and Ian came to blows in "Frank the Plumber."

So it’s just another day for Shameless.

Bradley Whitford on Shameless

Frank being a gay rights activist is about the least surprising thing that’s ever happened to him, considering his unending quest for a free ride, yet I also felt sorry for the guy as he went to the bar. Frank is always cold and crass, naturally, but in a small moment of karmic justice he’s now on the receiving end of some old and tired stereotypes.

Those tired stereotypes did get him free drinks, so Frank’s long tirades are finally beginning to have a positive side, but what’s most surprising is having Frank as the poster child for the gay rights movement. The man can’t stay focused for that long, and when he missteps, well, that’s going to set the whole movement back.

Jimmy’s minimum wage living is a much needed dose of reality for him, but so are his thoughts of heading back to medical school. He’s an enjoyable character, and his relationship with Fiona is a lot of fun, but he’s always looking for a quick exit or easy money.

The medical school idea puts both of those traits at odds - and Fiona might be stuck in the middle. Heading back to school affords Jimmy the exit he might want from all the craziness he’s dealing with, but school isn’t a quick fix. Nor does it result in immediate cash.

If Jimmy was to skip town again I’m not sure I’ll miss him (and this is coming from a big Fiona and Jimmy fan) because Fiona’s chemistry with her new supervisor, Mike Pratt, was very enjoyable to watch. Fiona’s temp job inspired her and made her happy, and Mike praised her for the good work she did that day. Fiona finishing a workday happy is something we barely ever get to witness. Once in a while, it’s great to see a Gallagher win.

Lip’s infatuation with Karen is annoying. Karen has never truly been in his corner or wanted anything for Lip other than sex. The girl is a user, and I have no sympathy for her and her self-made plight. I may have actually cheered and raised my hands up when I saw Karen get mowed down by Mandy’s car. Does this make me a terrible person? Most likely, but I’m willing to take the image hit if it means we can finally be done with Karen.

You keep up the good work, Mandy.

Finally, we have Mickey and Ian. Never have I been so divided in rooting for two people. On one hand, the strides Mickey was making this season with Ian were wonderful, as he was finally breaking out of his own closet. But, on the other, his father literally trying to beat the gay out of him has sent him running back in.

I can’t blame Mickey for wanting to go back in and slamming the door, it’s necessary for his survival, but it’s just so hard to see him take out all of his vulnerabilities, fears and insecurities on Ian. The beating could be Mickey’s own way of showing Ian how much he loves him, that he would literally beat his face in, if it means he could pull Ian out of the toxic situation he’s in with his father. However, like Fiona, I would love to see this Gallagher win one. Maybe he can give Jimmy's dad a call.

That wraps up this week for Shameless Season 3, TV Fanatics.

Jimmy...please grow a pair!!!seriously!
He was so sweet when Monica tried to kill herself, supporting Fiona, but now...oh my, such a crybaby... Love the interaction between Fiona and her new boss...he is cute! poor Ian.I was sad for him Mandy-Lip-Karen...Lip should just leave them. just go to MIT and stop with all this nonsensical women!!!

I agree, good Eps. It is hard to predict where these characters may end up. Karen getting ran over by Mandy was a curveball. (Didn't see that one coming, but you could tell the tension building between them). From previews for next episode, Lip finds out. Wonder how he reacts to Mandy with knowing that she about killed Karen? Let's face it, Lip still likes and has feelings for Karen, even though she has treated him like crap. But he's intelligent enough not to go that low for a girl who has the impulse to run someone over with car. Lip is crazy too, but not murderous-crazy. You got me where this ends up; I'm guessing someone will have to be killed off. Maybe Karen dies, or, Lip stays around to be with her in Season 4?

This is one of the best episode of the season. This season is turning out to be the best in all the 3 seasons. I just loved show that gets better and better. I used to like Jimmy and Fiona together but I think its time Jimmy moves on, will not be sorry if he goes. He does have really BAD luck in this episode making the audience recalls those really bad day that we all had. I used to like Karen a lot, the actress playing her is just so pretty and of course the nudity helps. However the character is so damage that she is just not good for Lip. Mandy however really loves Lip and Lip realized it too in the end. I was so surprised when Karen got it. Surely the producers did not bring her back just killed her off. I was even more surprised that Mandy is the one who did it.It should not really be surprising though as Mandy came from a gangster family after all. This is the saddest story line as Lip was coming back to her and they could have been so good together but next episode Lip is going to get really pissed at her after finding out.

hate karen, love mandy, karen is self-absorbed bitch and what mandy did may have been extreme but unlike karen the difference is she always has good intensions and karen was raised to know right from wrong or the limit mandy was not and mandy has been through way worse stuff than karen if any charachter has the right to be a crazy self-absorbed bitch its mandy not karen.

When viewers are emotionally invested in characters, the show's going to do well. Shameless has that going for it. Fiona, Debbie, Lip, Ian and even V and Kev, rooting hard for them all. You just want to see them get a break, and we saw a little of that last night. This was the best episode of Season 3, IMO. Karen is possibly the most evil person on the show, she almost didn't deserve Sheila's apology but you could see that was the root of a lot of her behavior. I adore Sheila though, her talk with Debbie was incredible. Debbie may be the most screwed up Gallagher and hopefully this will help her. Love what Mandy did for Lip with applications, I worry he won't follow through. Mandy has a good heart, she and her brother just don't know right from wrong thanks to their parents. I'm actually more sad for her in the hit n'run. Lip will never get over this. I don't know how anyone could like Mickey after tonight, what an %&@hole. Frank's story is hilarious!

Darn good episode as long as you FF your dvr anytime the annoying Frank Gallagher is on the screen ...

really love this show and yet another great episode. love ian and mickey, fiona and jimmy and im rooting for karen and lip, even though everyone hates her.
