So @huisclothes, that makes Lisbon's heart's desire to get Red John, too, then, right?

@entwife & km
she wants patrick badly. doesn't mean she'll own up to it. it would be painful to admit it to herself. he's not on the menu right now.
my hub always says, if you need an answer right away, you can get a quick no. she knows that. she has to wait and nothing she can do can speed the process except find red john's ass this minute. then she can ask the question.

Haha! @KM Love the picture you paint of the angry little princess on her pony waiting for her prince. You describe exactly where I think her heart's desire is!

I think those are all good points @KM. It's almost impossible to think Lisbon doesn't want a fulfilling personal partnership and family life. Really, the fact that I believe she wants all that with Patrick Jane would make me say he is her heart's desire, as trite as that sounds at this point. I don't think I'd be wrong. Aside from her career maybe, she seems like a normal woman, and a normal person. People want love and family and that's no mystery. I'm sure it's the repression that makes her sublimate all that to her career, especially since Patrick Jane doesn't seem to be waving her in. She's been at his side nearly day and night for 10 years and when was the last time we know she had a date or even heard it mentioned she was going out with someone? Was it Mashburn? She's holding out for something. I'd hope it's her heart's desire.

Maybe, Teresa Lisbon really is an angry little princess that lost her tiara and a fierce fighter of dragons. And, she's going to have to slay the fiercest of them so that the prince can help her find her tiara. He's already given her a pony for them to ride off into the sunset on.

Oh... And, that conversation she and Patrick had about Grace and Wayne highlighted a desire for herself. Other than that, I don't have much to support anything.
KM
March 23rd, 2013 10:21 PM
You could be correct @ Entwife. The only supporting data I have for my theory is her responses to Rigsby gushing about his son, the way she looked at her ex Greg and his family. And, that Heller described her in that interview as being repressed, more repressed (I believe; could be wrong) than Patrick is. Seems she can strive to give others peace, closure, and maybe the road to future happiness, but can't do the same for herself.

Maybe her heart's desire is to catch the bad guys.
KM
March 23rd, 2013 10:06 PM
Teresa's hearts desire maybe to have a life partner. She's a woman of faith, and so wants a partner she can trust to the level that she does not always have to feel the need to be in control, to feel safe, and wanted for who she is. A relationship that allows her to cut loose every so often and not be the one in charge. In short, I think she wants the family she lost. It wasn't a perfect family, but it was safe, good, and full of love.
Entwife
March 23rd, 2013 10:02 PM
That's a tough question @huisclothes. Lisbon doesn't seem to be seeking true love or even regular sex. She's basically said she's given up any thought of her career going anywhere by throwing her lot in with Jane. She's never mentioned a hobby and probably has no time to pursue one. Personally I think she wants Patrick Jane very badly, but she makes no moves to make it happen. So, is it really her heart's desire? Can't think of a thing.

thinking about what we know about the characters in terms of how they spend their time.
we know about patrick. we know what his heart's desire is. we know what he does with his free time. we know what keeps him up at night. he comes home after a plate of eggs at a diner and lies on his bed wondering about what he missed in his investigation. reads. pays the mortgage on his house in malibu and pays the grounds maintenance on his family's graves. listens to messages from danny ruskin asking for money. maybe he watches tv - ravening beasts or the angry chef.
lisbon plays poker. dances to the spice girls. perhaps uses that yoga mat grace gave her. scolds her brothers over the phone. attends church services. what is lisbon's heart's desire?

I remember discussions about Lisbon smashing that box @rationalgal but I don't think I quite got what the significance of that could be until you bring it up again now, so thanks for that. Lisbon absolutely brings her own special gifts to the mix. Straightforward and right to the heart of getting a thing done, without the elaborate machinations and manipulations that Jane delights in. And Lisbon is willing to accept the consequences, too.

I worried all night that this site was shut down. Glad to see you're all still here. Seems to have been a global glitch. We are slaves of technology! About Lisbon's skills that are unknown to Jane (and probably not understandable by him): Remember when she broke open that puzzle with a hammer? "You don't know as much about me as you think you do" she says to an astounded Jane. Earlier, she punched out the guy in jail who Jane was trying desperately to free before he could expose Jane's part in the LaRoche burglary. She did it instinctively, just as she broke the puzzle. Got right to the essence of the problems and solved them without any "mentalist" skills. I'll bet she finds out who and where RJ is in the same intuitive way before Jane does, probably saving his ass in the process. Jane needs to realize ASAP how valuable Lisbon's unique skills are.

I have to give Lisbon her due. She's a professional. She's a woman in a mostly male occupation. She's a crime fighter, an investigator, an interrogator and a team leader. She's learned to compartmentalize and control her emotional reactions, and I'm thinking that's especially true when it comes to personal feelings towards coworkers and maybe extra extra careful about romantic feelings. So in one way it's not surprising if Patrick, as good as he is, can't completely read her, and maybe especially so if he has feelings for her. Plus she would be trying extra hard not to give a clue to any romantic feelings she has for him. All of it, no matter which slant a person is inclined to emphasize, is what makes the scene at Orchid Lane in TWBB so shocking and so moving. That said, I do think he knows she loves him, after 10 years of observation and interaction. She is probably much less sure of him.
KM
March 23rd, 2013 8:11 PM
Lastly, the outcome of Patrick's hoping came to no surprise in "There Will Be Blood". His hope in Lorelei was empty, she kept her word and did not betray Red John. And, Teresa came through. He may had to stand there at Orchid Lane and look at the pain he generates, and sweat a night wondering, but she had his back as she always does. I'm still convinced that most of what Patrick Jane knows about Teresa Lisbon is what she allows. Hence the joy when he succeeds in Jane-ing her. Like "Kansas City".
KM
March 23rd, 2013 7:53 PM
I can't stay around. But, I'm inclined to think that Patrick is brilliantly observant, but he is not perfect. Tis his pride and excellent success rate that leads him to mistakenly believe he is near perfection. Patrick cannot completely read Teresa, just as he could not completely read Lorelei, and perhaps even is wife (not sure about this). Still he has his blind spot. If he knew them as well as he thought he did, neither woman would have left him blindsided in "There Would Be Blood". In short, Teresa is not the open book or as transparent as he'd like to believe, and that is part of her attractiveness. It does not appear that a completely readable woman generates sexual desire in Patrick. He's drawn to women who keep him on his toes, and make him hope. Just my opinion.

@estatica i would love jane to want to know. i think he wants to know everything that anyone is doing, actually. he's a bit of a yenta. but he would pick up on that without having to ask lisbon. he'd make his observations and keep his mouth shut then bring it up when he could get the maximum fun out of teasing her about it.

@estatica funny you should bring up the return of mashburn as a romantic interest for lisbon. i think it would be great if jane felt jealousy -- if that emotion broke through -- even if we only saw his face when they couldn't see.
however, last night, i re-watched the days of wine and roses, not one of my favorites (most of this year's episodes would be on that list). that's the ep where jane says he wishes for lisbon to fall in love. it made me want to puke. i hated his patronizing tone. and i hated that she didn't get upset. awful.
she didn't have to show what she might be feeling but he sure didn't have to adopt this high-handed fairy godmother tone. i wanted to kick him in his beautiful butt.

@estatica yes. shirali arlov. i was talking about him months ago. he explains the limos, the diplomatic immunity, the money, the reason homeland security would be after him, the ability to get away with murder over and over again. plus arlov was a charismatic character, cultured in his own way and certainly got a kick out of jane.
but that was a long long time ago. if we get a sixth season, it would be interesting if we followed patrick and teresa as they revisited all the characters from these older episodes, walter mashburn, dean harkin, shirali arlov, tolman bunting, etc. that way they could re-establish everyone and we'd have a huge pool of rj candidates widely known by the normal viewer by the end of season 6.

@estatica and @entwife - totally agree with you. Jane knows what he means to Lisbon. She already told him in the S1 finale that there are people (her) that care for him and need him. And he IS trying to work as a team member. More so now than ever. Would he give up his life for Lisbon? In a heartbeat! But I think he would do the same for the other members of the team as well. Would he sacrifice himself to kill RJ? I do believe so, if he absolutly can't find another way. But we all know how cunning and smart he is. @entwife. i think he would try to live through a confrontation with red john and i think this was always so. but he would die if that was his assessment of the situation. perhaps now, making that decision would be more emotionally painful and poignant for him because of his deepened ties to others. but i think he's a man of principle those principles are very well-integrated. he knows what his values are, so he wouldn't have to think about it. he would act on those values. he would do everything he could to avoid having to die but he wouldn't back away if he thought it was necessary.
