The Vampire Diaries Review: The Off Switch

at . Comments

When "Elena" and "Caroline" are trending worldwide on Twitter after only the East Coast airing of The Vampire Diaries, you know it's been a wild episode! What could have happened in "Bring It On" for these two characters' names to be plastered all over social media?

For starters, Elena has completely shut off her humanity.

And FYI: she's loving every minute of it.

Elena v. Stefan

Elena with no humanity is almost identical to Katherine, so right off the bat you know she's not going to get along with Caroline. Despite Damon's attempt at using his sire bond puppet strings to control her, Elena was still running wild. She rejoined cheerleading only to end up feeding off the competition, fighting with Caroline, and letting Caroline fall from the air during a stunt.

Next it was Stefan's turn to try and control Elena; nothing a little injection of vervain couldn't take care of! Then again isn't Stefan always taking care of Elena? Elena said it herself, it seems like Stefan spends his entire life trying to protect, control, and monitor her actions. Do you agree? Or do you side with Stefan that it's his responsibility because he brought the whole vampire lifestyle into Elena's life to begin with?

Since Sergeant Stefan had Elena grounded she threw a party at Casa Salvatore. A drunk party swarming with people made the perfect diversion for Elena to escape Stefan's ever-watchful eyes. It would've worked for a few more minutes if she didn't piss off Caroline again and throw Sheriff Forbes into a wall. Before Elena body checked Caroline's mom and called Caroline out on her nosiness and feelings for Klaus, Caroline made an excellent point. It was great to see Elena actually having fun again.

OK so obviously Elena isn't being an upstanding pillar of society, but I'm really enjoying off-switch Elena. She's fun! She isn't whiny! Isn't that what everyone's biggest gripe about Miss Gilbert has been for the past 3 seasons? She always needed protection and everything was always centered around her. Personally I say everyone should stop trying to shove this cure down her throat and let the girl enjoy being a vampire.

Speaking of, are we done with this cure storyline yet? Since Damon, Rebekah, Klaus, and Hayley spent the whole episode trying to track Katherine's minions for a lead to the cure, I'd say that storyline is not over. Then Stefan figured out that the lack of local blood supplies must mean that Silas is in town. If everyone else would follow Damon's attitude about the cure, the only person who might still have to worry about it is Klaus. You know Katherine is just dying to shove the cure down his throat! But hey, at least Klaus got laid right?

Life sucks when you're ordinary. And what makes you exactly not like them? You're a vampire. You take that cure and become human? You're no one, nothing. Trust me, losing this cure was the best damn thing that ever happened to you. | permalink

Damon accepts being a vampire, wants to have fun and intends to continue the party with Elena in New York. What was up with his friend Will that he ran into? Guess we'll find out more of that backstory when they hit the Big Apple.

What did you think of the latest episode of The Vampire Diaries? Do you prefer off switch Elena? Are you into the Klaus and Hayley hook up? If Matt just inherited the biggest house in town does that mean he can quit working at The Grill? Hit the comments!

Really? Switch-off Elena is fun? I found her even more tedious and boring than she was before. Which is almost impressive. In fact the whole episode was pretty dull. Klaus and Hayley was just weird - not sure why anyone would want to spend 5 minutes around her, she's incredibly annoying too. And why on earth was Elena able to beat Caroline easily in fight? They always have to make something special about her don't they. Yawn.

Really looking forward to evil Elena, or at least, souless Elena

I mean even if she will end up with Stefan their should be at least one single episode of happiness for these two after 70episodes of damon and elena ...grgrgr

I rewatched the second season during the break and I felt like meeting an old friend who was missed for a long time. I must admit that I miss these times of mystic falls. Everything what happened till that point of the show happened in a bad way I never expected. All these foolish building of delena and now we got a hot sex scene interrupted by Stefan and Caroline. We lost Alaric, Jeremy and Tyler. And klaus is now a man like damon 2.0 who is in the need to be saved from his dark side. And sure he has a heart of gold under this evil face he show everyone around including his family. I get it. Development is the key for a show. But sometimes i think the writers lost their way. And I feel a little bit played as a huge fan of damon and elena and I think the fanbase of Stefan and elena will agree that the big decision of the last season was pure nonsense. And sorry , but I wanted delena to happen epic and not so unbelievable fast and with stupid interruptions. I mean even if she will end up with Stefan their should be at least one single episode of happiness for these two after 70episodes of wanting them..grgrgr

Elena without emotions is just a copy of Katherine which is just pathetic. Katherine can be only one. I dont know, i dont buy it.
I felt bad for Caroline this episode, why wont the writers let her be happy? Well on the other hand Klaus and Hayley was hot and Matt is kind of rich :D Now i just cannot wait for Katherine and Elijah action

This was a pretty good episode...I prefer Elena w/out feelings LOL. However, I was confused about the sire bond...if it was broken due to no emotions, why did it seem like Damon was the only person she talked to and got along with? Aside from that, I thought the party was fun. Wished Caroline fought back a tad bit harder tho!
Klaus and Hayley...not a fan. Sorry! I liked Phoebe Tonkin in the Secret Circle but am not feeling her as Hayley. First, her character has not been explained and developed well. Also, I'm not getting how she is being tied in w/Katherine. I know they are trying to set up the backstory for the Originals spin-off but STILL. Please leave Hayley!
Also, I thought it was odd that they went to school and Bonnie was MIA w/o anyone even asking about her. Odd...especially when she was talking all cray cray the last time they saw her!

Guys, you are missing the most important point of the episode - Matt owns a freaking mansion! How on EARth is he ever going to manage to keep up maintenance? LOL at these writers. P.S. Why was there nothing on the Klayley sex scene in the review? thoughts?

The only reason why Elena is stronger than Caroline would be that Katherine is hiding as Elena.....maybe the real Elena is trapped somewhere....what would be more perfect for Katherine?

This episode was terrible and I didn't enjoy any minute of it. Elena is acting like such a little brat now and so much like Katherine. I understand she has no humanity and doesn't care but she doesn't have to be such a b.... I hope she gets her humanity back by the end of the season, as this show is getting stupid now and the main characters have no purpose anymore. Klaus and Hayley was stupid too and made no sense.

Loved this episode! Elena is a badass! Caroline got what was coming to her all season. Klaus Haley was random but hot. Wish it had been a damon elena thing but I guess I'll have to wait for next weeks. Also I think it makes sense that even though her humanity is off she is still drawn to Damon. Just because she doesn't feel love for anyone doesn't mean she forgot what a fun vampire Damon is. He is carefree and he accepts and enjoys being a vampire, unlike Stefan and Caroline who are so broody about it.

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 16 Quotes

Caroline: Feeding on the competition, hello did you not hear what Damon told you?
Elena: I did but who cares? I'll do whatever I want.

She's a vampire, off switch is one of the biggest perks.
