Once Upon a Time Review: The Barfly & the Beast

by at . Comments

Just when Mr. Gold thought he had a chance to get Belle back, "Lacey" entered the picture and nothing will ever be the same on Once Upon a Time.

Belle and Billiards

Perhaps everyone in Storybrooke needs to be a little nicer to Regina. She doesn't deal with rejection well... or being the last to know.

Someone really should have informed Regina that Henry's father was in town, but then again it's not as though they're a close family. She and Emma can barely tolerate each other for Henry's sake and Mary Margaret did just kill her mother. That will leave family relations a bit strained.

But hearing the news from Gold - who snarkily remarked, "You didn't get the birth announcement?" - wasn't the best case scenario. It left Regina wanting to hurt someone - and she took her anger out on Belle.

So much for our sweet, demure, book loving librarian. Now we've got a girl with short skirts who asks for the bottle instead of a glass and ends up in alleyways with men she barely knows.

Granny's reaction said it all in this Once Upon a Time quote…

What the hell happened to you? You raid the back of Ruby's closet? | permalink

After watching Belle unearth Rumpelstiltskin's good side back in the fairy tale world, it was disheartening to see Lacey bring back his dark side. Some girls just love the bad boys and Mr. Gold was more than happy to oblige.

In other news, the magic beans were almost ready to be harvested and Mary Margaret's blackened heart had her running back to the fairy tale world. Only she wants Emma and Henry to come with them.

I hadn't thought there was any chance Emma would even consider it until David put it to her this way…

Emma: This world is my home.
David: It's been nothing but cruel to you. If we go back I think you might be able to have your happy ending. | permalink

That's certainly alluring. Of course her fate in that world could just as easily end with an ogre ripping her limb from limb, so who's to say what will happen? The truth is no one can promise anyone their happy ending.

Not that things in Storybrooke aren't equally strange. It wasn't that long ago that Emma and August were flirting. Now he's a little boy playing with her kid. That's just disturbing.

With Hook back in town, what havoc will he bring down on Storybrooke? Has Gold completely given up on Belle and decided to indulge in bad girl Lacey? And will Regina destroy the beans, or use them to her advantage? With only three episodes left in Once Upon a Time season 2, there are plenty of questions in need of answers.

Does Lacey remind anyone else of Mila? How ironic it would be if Rumple's journey to become more like the Dark One to attract Lacey just resulted in her leaving him for Hook...AGAIN!
Oh my God, you're right! They are quite similar: drawn to the bad guy, enjoying themselves in bars, both like flirting and are free-spirited. Guess that's the reason I don't like Lacey, I despised Mila. I'm not saying they're evil, it's just I don't like this kind of character. I'm curious what Regina will do when she finds out she didn't do herself a favour. A loving, caring Rumple with his Belle would've been better for her own good than a "much darker" manipulator whose girl actually likes it when he goes bad.

@Rosanne : you're right, Regina had her commited without her cursed persona, but I think she always had a cursed personality created for her. For 28 years, she simply had amnesia. Now she remembers her fake identity, just like David did when he woke up from his coma. He "remembered" his life with Kathryn, even though it was all fake and he was never with her in the first place.

I saw it coming a mile away. The way that Lacey kept asking him if it was true that he was a badass... actually what surprised me was that they adult(ed) it a bit. Rumple was covered in blood at one point and while it was done with magic he did sever a tongue and hold it in his hand. I think it was the right amount of menace. Let's not forget that fairy tales were meant to be scary! And maybe it's just me but Hook is a joke. He's been defeated by everyone and he comes off as a pervert. I can't empathize with his situation. He's lucky all he lost was his hand imho. Maybe its just the actor becz Rumple has done far worse yet I can sympathize with his plight. Robert is just that good at what he does.

I'm glad that not too much attention was given to Robin Hood. Sometimes the writers go a bit overboard with bringing in more characters instead of focusing on the ones they started off with in the first season. What happened to Cinderella? Anyway, Belle reverting to her "cursed" persona was a nice twist to the Belle/Gold love affair since we never got to see Belle as Lacey before curse was lifted. I am confused though. Wasn’t Belle locked up by Regina for 28 years in a mental ward? It will be interesting to see how Gold reconciles the issue of Henry being the cause of his "undoing" although I think Gold has the wrong idea about it. I like the show but I don't like the way Emma's character is written. She is such an annoying heroine. I knew Regina was going to eventually find out about the magic beans but why write it so that Emma indirectly gives it up by what she said to Regina. This after everything she has been through with Regina. She is so brainless.

I was a little disappointed in Robin Hood. They could have done so much more with him. I hope he comes back in future episodes. Lacey was fun; Granny's reaction was great. Lacey and Ruby would be an awesome pair (speaking of Ruby, where is she?).

SIDE NOTE: Did anyone else see the Harry Potter-like wand in Rumple's shop in the wand collection? We thought that was cute.

You all know what's going to happen once Lacey spots Hook, don't you? Rumple may be dark. But, face it. Hook's got the looks, the eyeliner, and the black leather chaps to get Lacey's motor really running.

I'm actually quite excited to see what will become of this Lacey. The way the writers twisted THAT story line was really good and I'm really interested on how it will take a toll on Rumplestiltskin.
BUT I really hope that Belle doesn't stay as "Lacey" forever.
Because I think Rumple deserves to redeem his true self. And the only way he can truely do that is through the person that HE fell in love with. And that was Belle, NOT "Lacey".
That being said, I bloody can't wait to see what the writers have in store! :D

I like lacy. it strikes me sad though that shes (belle) has brought the kindness back to him, but in order to keep her rhes going to have to revert to his dark side. poor guy cannt catch a break with her. i dont like david like i used to. hes lost something. snow upset me last night running away from storybrook, i dont think ftl will fix her. and i have the feeling this tamara and whats his nuts storyline is just going to get more and more stupid.

I do no think Emma will like FTL that much because she grew up in electronics so she would not be able to convert from that easily. David gets on my nerves because how do they know everybody wants to go home and Snow running away only makes things worst. I am in love with Lacey and glad she is staying for a while. They honestly expect me that Gold give out being in debt that easily. There was not enough Emma and Regina scenes.
