The Big Bang Theory Review: The Unresolved Cliffhanger Problem

at .

After tonight's The Big Bang Theory, I'm glad I ended up deleting my stockpile of Alphas episodes from my DVR. As far as entertainment goes, I don't think there's anything as frustrating as watching a television series that ends on a cliffhanger without resolution.

On "The Closure Alternative," Sheldon's problem went beyond his frustration at the Syfy network for the cancellation of Alphas and to his obsession with closure. Amy tried to fix him by putting him through a series of situations without closure in order to train his mind to accept incomplete actions and activities. It was valiant effort, Amy.

Unsuccessful, but a nice try regardless.

Trouble With Closure

She put Sheldon through complete activities including: a Tic-Tac-Toe game, the National Anthem, setting up dominoes without knocking them down, cranking a Jack-in-the-Box without having him pop and blocking candles from being blown out on a cake. I think I would have cringed at the dominoes and Jack-in-the-Box. I mean, seriously, setting up the dominoes and not getting the joy of watching them all fall down? That's cruel.

And, the poor Jack-in-the-Box. Amy should have felt for Jack. Getting all wound up, but kept from busting out. Especially given Sheldon's comment....

Sheldon: You don't know what it's like to feel completely frustrated. To have a-a desire build up within you and be denied any opportunity for release.
Amy: Yeah. Sounds like a drag. | permalink

The activities were a blast to watch, especially because they caused Sheldon to get so frustrated. It's not often that he lets someone get the better of him like this. In the end, Sheldon felt satisfied and played his girlfriend by going back through all the activities and completing them. Hilarious and appropriate.

Though, he was ultimately let down after talking to Bruce Miller, an Alphas writer. He got the closure he wanted regarding the show's cliffhanger, but it hated the answer. Be careful what you ask for. Though, he did have one of the funniest lines earlier about canceled shows with his dig at Heroes. And, I was a fan of the show until the very end.

Sheldon: They can't just cancel a show like Alphas. You know? They have to help the viewers let go. Firefly did a movie to wrap things up. Buffy the Vampire Slayer continued on as a comic book. Heroes gradually lowered the quality season by season till we were grateful it ended. | permalink

Sheldon's mention of Buffy the Vampire Slayer got Leonard all excited to share the show with Penny. He thought he had picked a winner. A cult classic that he loved, but the Penny would like too. Unfortunately, she just didn't get as passionate about it as he did. She thought it was "cute" and then settled on "fun." Ouch.

Leonard's passion and then disappointment stuck with Penny. She wondered why she didn't have a passion like all her friends. And, in the end, she realized that she did have that it was just in a different way. She was passionate about Leonard and her friends. Aww. I guess that's a positive sign for the future of Penny and Leonard's relationship. Though, no couple's costume at Comic-Con.

As Leonard and Penny continue grow in their relationship, Raj and Lucy are just getting to know each other. Raj found her blog and struggled with whether to read it or not. It was fun to see Raj and Howard back together for some bro-time. They haven't shared as much time in The Big Bang Theory season 6 as they did in previous seasons. It's scary to think that Howard has grown so much that he is a good relationship coach for Raj. Oh, the days when he was a creepy, woman-leering man.

They are just hilarious together. Here a couple of my favorite exchanges:

Howard: People change names on blogs to protect their privacy. Roger is Raj.
Raj: Oh, I always thought, if I had a white name, it would be Gavin. | permalink

Howard: So take what's in that blog and use it to get her pants off.
Raj: Why do you have to make everything so filthy? Why couldn't you just say the blog is like her giving me the key to her heart?
Howard: The key to her heart. That's nice. Were you quoting someone or is it tattooed on the small of your back?
Raj: I was quoting a man who knows a thing or two about women: Sir Elton John. | permalink

Overall, "The Closure Alternative" was a funny return after a much-too-long hiatus. Check out more of the hilarious The Big Bang Theory quotes from the episode.

What was your favorite activity that Amy had Sheldon not complete? Which joke or line had you laughing the most?

Sheldon

Sheldon: Why would the Chinese make our DVR record Paul Blart: Mall Cop?
Leonard: I don't know. It's a fat guy on a Segway. That's funny everywhere.
