The Vampire Diaries Review: Finding Her Hu-Matt-ity

at . Comments

Matt Donovan proved one thing on "She's Come Undone," a Vampire Diaries episode that brought back the old Elena, nearly killed the Sheriff and featured Bonnie making a deal with the Devil:

You don't need to wear a varsity jacket to play hero.

Seriously, let's all give a slow clap to Matty D. The guy may not know his Pythagorean Theorem from his Periodic Table, but the busboy saved the day this week. Give that man a promotion, Grill!

Pain for Elena

Matt's quasi sacrifice finally broke down Elena's emotional floodgates at the perfect time.

This storyline has been a tremendous showcase for Nina Dobrev (she was especially strong in the climactic scene, believing her first high school sweetheart to be dead), while also taking focus away from the played-out Cure arc and from the tiresome love triangle.

But we all knew it would conclude at some point and I applaud Julie Plec and company for this creative solution: not only did it give Matt a chance to shine, it served as a callback - a call all the way back - to The Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale and this year's premiere, as Matt was able to repay his debt and Rebekah was able to come full circle with an apology for her role in that whole driving-Matt-and-Elena-off-the-bridge-and-prompting-the-latter-to-become-a-vampire thing.

(Pssst, Matt: forget Rebekah as your tutor. You should go ahead and toot her... if you know what I mean!)

Elsewhere... well, not a great deal happened. This was a tight, focused hour that mostly concerned itself with evil experiments on Elena. Not that I'm complaining. The Vampire Diaries can sometimes suffer from too many things happening at once, from going a million (sorry, Caroline, 90 million) miles an hour and relying more on shock and awe than sense and logic.

So I welcomed a respite. The episode was clean and tidy and we were left with some intriguing resolutions:

  • Bonnie has a scheme to bring down the Veil. Hey Bon-Bon, what's the French words for buzzkill?
  • She also has a deal in place with Katherine.
  • Silas has issued a threat that there will be consequences if Bonnie does not live up to her end of their dangerous bargain.
  • Elena wants to kill Katherine because she's responsible for everything that sucks.

That's where we are heading into "The Walking Dead" and then the Season 4 finale. What did you think of "She's Come Undone?"

Are you glad that the old Elena has returned? Is Rebekah on her way to being redeemed? What, exactly, is Bonnie planning? And who would make a better study partner, Caroline or Rebekah? Sound off now, TVD Fanatics!

What an episode. Elena got her humanity back and the reason she wants to live is to get revenge and kill Katherine. Damon is genius! and Matt finally have a purpose. I can't wait for the finale and see who actually gets the cure. This episode feels like season 1 and 2 with most of the originals gone its good to see the main characters back in action fighting to stop an apocalypse.

Sorry but this episode blew harder than a hooker on 42nd Street .... I just don't care about Elena's Humanity switch, Bonnie, the pussy whipped brothers etc. it was disappointing to be on such a high last week and be shot down right to reality with this weeks installment... at this point the originals can't come soon enough.... even Silas sounded ridiculous with that horribly done voice over.

Well one thing. Damon is fucking genius. He is the real hero, the dark knight of MF. He knew if not for him, Elena would feel for Matt, her only unbiased, not at all judgemental innocent friend. I loved Damon for what he did. Damon brought Elena back, Matt was a great medium and fucking brilliant idea. Did I say Damon brought Elena back? Damon. Damon Salvatore. Damon fucking Salvatore. D-A-M-O-N. Aw. So many Damon and Delena feels. I am glad Elena is back and before anyone bash Elena with her future kill-Kat plan, well, I would do the same to the person who killed my only brother. No chance.

@@what happened. Unfortunately her willing to kill her best friends, was just Elena willing to do it. Chances are she would of been just as crushed as she was when Matt died. Lol, ridiculous fans, ridiculous fans. She down right would of put Matt within a inch of his life if not for Stefan, never actually crossing the barrier and killing him. She didn't look she cared about Matt at all, until of course, when he actually died. ;)

Matt, I'm guessing Rebekah sexiness warranted a comment for Us guys. Jeez that Girl...hmmm, I'll keep it PG and say she's Sex on a Stick. Great Episode all around, and I know exactly what you mean when TVD has too much on it's plate and can become a mess. Love the character interactions and TVD season 1 scores/OST were playing. Alot of great shockers as well, I almost my TV set when Matt died. 9.2/10.
Ps. No one liked brat Elena. No one.

I have a feeling that Jeremy will return.

@Whathappend: Elena didn't actually kill them did she? Matt was DEAD, so it mattered.

Great episode. Glad to have Elena back, pain, and all. I've missed her. Wow they really had me fooled when Damen snapped Matt's neck. I thought he was really dead. I'm so glad he's alive and Caroline's mom too. Cant wait to see them graduate together finally. Maybe taking down Catherine is what Elena needs to have some peace of mind after losing Jeremy. Avenging her brother's death will surely do that. Whether she succeeds or not, it will at least give her a reason to fight back instead of drowning in self pity.

I loved this episode. Torchering Elena didn't work because she new they would never kill her so they brought in Katherine who wouldn't care about killing her but even that didn't break her. It took watching someone loves get killed right in from of her to make her turn her emotions back on. When Stefan told her to focus on one emotion I was sure she would focus on hate and she did but I didn't know her hate would all be focused on Katherine. I have a hard time believing that Bonnie will make sure Katherine is completely immortal like Silas because hello it's Katherine he might not be as bad as Klaus but she's still bad and I can't even imagine what she would do with that kind of power. I can't wait till the next episode it looks really good.

Great episode!!! She back!!! SHOULD WE BE SAYING BYE TO OUR KATHERINA????
