The Vampire Diaries Review: To No A-Veil

at . Comments

Vemotus kravis an adenum...

Oh, Bonnie. You just had to utter those words, didn't you? You couldn't leave well enough a stone... bid farewell to Jeremy... and find a new love who looks slightly worse in a wifebeater, could you?

And, as a result, you are now a member of "The Walking Dead."

That, TVD Fanatics, is what we call one shocker of an ending.

Bonnie Up Close

Is Bonnie really a goner? It would certainly appear so, unless events on the Season 4 finale result in some more un-Veiling and she gets resurrected via the sometimes confusing and frustrating universe that is The Vampire Diaries afterlife.

Don't you dare get me wrong: I loved the return of Alaric. No, really. I loved, loved, loved, loved seeing everyone's favorite bourbon-swilling history teacher back in Mystic Falls, sharing BFF moments with Damon and once again playing the role of reluctant hero.

And Lexi? And Jeremy? And... ummm, Kol? I guess? Almost all welcome appearances.

But it's a fair criticism of this show that it can't leave the dead buried. Or in Ghost World. Or whatever they're calling it these days. It's hard for emotional scenes to stick when we're fairly confident we'll see the supposedly deceased character again at some point.

And with The Originals stealing away a few Vampire Diaries cast members, and with Bonnie's powers seemingly endless, we probably don't need to pen any obituaries just yet.

Spoilers have also revealed that at least one of the returnees we saw tonight will stick around for good this fall. Who will it be? Who do you want it to be?

  • Damon has The Cure. Will he give it to Elena? Pour it down the drain? Use it to kill Klaus? Consider this my first finale prediction: Damon will somehow end up drinking it and the final scene of "Graduation" will be of a human Damon Salvatore.
  • Three of The Five are back. Hi, Alexandar. Greetings, Connor. What's shakin, Vaughn? They have their sights set on Silas, but in a less fearless finale prediction, it's not hard to see how their arrival will prompt Rebekah to run away. I hear New Orleans is lovely this time of year.
  • Elena has rediscovered her humanity. All of her humanity, not just those parts that want to feast on Katherine's insides. This arc has been a great showcase for Nina Dobrev. It's been a refreshing distraction from the love triangle and sire bond nonsense as well. And Elena is also really good at darts. Prediction number-three: Elena will spend the summer trying out for The American Darters Association.
  • Staroline Alert! Clefan Tease! Potential Couple in Need of a Nickname Warning! Within five minutes, Lexi picked up on what Stefan and Caroline were putting down. Yes, the latter must say goodbye to Klaus next week, and Tyler is still sort of around we suppose... but will The Vampire Diaries Season 5 actually go there? Staroline seeds were definitely planted here. Prediction number-four: I'll be ever so happy if those seeds are allowed to fully grow.

Overall, a terrific penultimate installment.

The last few weeks have seen Bonnie take center stage, which is far more preferable to the ways in which her powers have been used as a storyline pawn in the past. The final scene and closing words (I'm dead) were legitimately startling, while the return of the hunters and the revelation of Silas' true identity - come on, no way they don't follow up on that nugget, right? - leave plenty of finale possibilities.

Oh, and... ALARIC!!! Pardon me while I go jump for some more joy and sound off now: What did you think of "The Walking Dead?" Is Bonnie truly about to rest in peace? Will Matt get some from Rebekah before she leaves? And what are you most excited for on the finale, previewed here?

I love Lexi! So I really hope the writers will keep her around. It would be a great twist if in the end she gets to drink the cure, I mean why not? When the portal closes its a way she can stay and and bring new energy to the cast. She is good for Stefan who loves her and needs her friendship. If Damon becomes human I think the show gets boring. It will be the good Stefan against the good Damon, so I dont think so. My fav couples at the moment are as always Stefan and Elena. Damon and Lexi, if she can forgive him that he killed her once. Caroline moves to New Orleans to live with Klaus and Clair stays in Mystic Falls and starts dating Matt.

Oh, one more thing....Nina Dobrev really has been incredible this season...seriously! If it wasn't the CW, she'd deserve an Emmy.

As for the cure, I really hope Damon does NOT give it to Elena. Obviously, Bex is going on the run to New Orleans, so it won't go to her, Klaus is down south trying to be King, so he won't take it... Caroline doesn't want it. That leaves Stefan, Damon, Elena or Katherine. I'm hoping for Katherine... that would be interesting and she's played out on the show already. I don't want whiny, damsel-in-distress Elena back.
I wouldn't mind if Damon takes the cure, ends up human. Then, somehow and in the end, Elena gets cured. They are human together (this only is good if you like Delena end game, which I do). Stefan ends up with Caroline..they are so good together. End scene.

I did LOVE to see Alaric, I won't lie. But I am becoming increasingly confused by all the lore and myths and spells and rituals already. Remember when the sun and moon curse was the most confusing thing on TVD? Or back in Season 1 when it was just about vampires and a girl? I miss that.
I don't know if Bon-Bon is actually dead...I don't comprehend the veil nonsense enough to even venture a guess on where or what she is. If I had to venture a guess as to who will stick around, I bet Jeremy. I'd be okay with that :-)

Totally agree that the dead need to stay dead on this show. Granted, it's only the dead that were supernatural in life that seem to come back (hence no return of Elena's parents or Aunt Jenna or even UncleDaddy John)...but, still. There is no finality, no stakes (sorry for the pun) to death. If the writers just keep killing and resurrecting characters, then death will mean nothing on this show.

Amazing Episode! So many great things...... but One Major Problem.... don't want to complain with such a great episode but......Lexi & Anna actresses both still do Vampire Diaries Rehash videos... when Lexi showed up, I had hoped Anna would return. I am still holding out hope though! But really missed oppurtunity!
Doesn't it feel like they are building up for a new set of The Five. So best way to keep him Silas down Plus would be great chance to give Alaric, Jeremy, and Matt powers!

This was one of the best episodes ever!
I have been a loyal fan of TVD since day one and have always enjoyed the show but this was one a whole other level!
When I read an interview with Julie a couple days ago and she said a major death occurs, I first thought Bonnie, but then I was like, Julie would not do that and then I was thought NO, that is exactly what Julie would do.
So essentially Bonnie unknowingly sacrificed herself for Jeremy. Elena gains a brother but loses her best friend. At leas that is what I assume as another article I read says one person coming back to life will stick.
I was glad to see Alaric, however as soon as we saw Kol at the grill I knew it was Silas and I was glad Damon caught on soon to that as well.
It was nice to see the real Alaric with Damon near the end (I was surprised to see Matt Davis as he said he wanted to leave TVD as he was not happy the direction Julie and company took Alaric). I was also happy to see Lexie.
Next week will be epic.

Oh! And I forgot to mention! I loved when kol said to rebekah that she weep for him the first 24 hs! Then his family just forgot about him, and I'm glad that at least the writers acknowlege that!

Before bonnie died, I thought that jeremy was the dead one that was going to stick around, but now I'm certain that they'll resurrect bonnie, I mean, they need a witch! They wouldnt last a day without one!

Wow! - Bonnie. I don't think she is dead. I think her Grams is trying to teacher her a leson. If she is dead maybe Damon gives her the cure. Why would Damon take the cure? He is great as a vampire, Caroline too. As for Stephan and Caroline - NO! Why does every couple have to be romantic? They are great as friends, leave them that way. If someone is sticking around, then I vote: Jeremy. Didn't like Jer until this season when he became a hunter. With Alaric gone they need a hunter. So far I am still rooting a Stephan/Elaina reunion. Can't wait for the finale.

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 22 Quotes

You're gonna flood Mystic Falls with dead creatures so you can ask a 2,000-year old witch for not one but two favors?

I just want to kill her. It's that simple.
