Rookie Blue Review: Captains of the Universe

by at .

Even though Steve Peck was the one to refer to himself as Captain of the Universe, there were others who could have easily carried the title in "You Are Here."

As a matter of fact, Steve waffled between cute and annoying as his disappointment over Traci's rejection had him trying to take over her first solo case. I was relieved that Traci's gained enough confidence not to let him do it. She might still be a rookie detective, but she's learned a lot over the last year.

Gail & Andy

I'm still not entirely sure if Traci and Steve are the right fit, but I wouldn't mind seeing them give it a try.

The hero of Traci's case was Chloe, who started the hour feeling completely undervalued as the booking fairy. How perfect that she was the one to help bring Chuck down. I'd guessed he was the mastermind behind the Grow-Op early on. His I'm just a dumb pot-head routine simply felt too overplayed to be real.

Andy's hesitance to tell Gail also felt overplayed. I just wanted to scream at Andy most of the night. She had so many chances to tell Gail the truth about her and Nick that I was frustrated that she chose to blurt it out that she'd slept with him while Gail was high on pain medicine.

As harsh as it sounded, I kind of enjoyed it when Gail told Andy off in this Rookie Blue quote

You are the bad guy. You, Ms Perfect never hurt a fly McNally are the bad guy. And look at it, it's just killing you. | permalink

Telling Gail was never going to go well but the only way Andy could have made more of a mess of it would have been to NOT tell her at all and let her walk in on them kissing. Can Gail and Andy salvage their friendship after this debacle?

In the end, Andy told Nick he was worth it; of course, she has no idea what just occurred at Oliver's cabin.

Oliver Shaw was the true hero of the night. As he pressed Sam to help him figure out his relationship with girlfriend Celery, he got Sam Swarek to be honest with himself. How often does that happen?

Sam: I see you two together and I know that she's right for you.
Oliver: Like you and McNally?
Sam: Exactly. | permalink

I wanted to hug Oliver. Before you knew it he had Sam fantasizing about kids and walks in the park. No wonder Sam went at Andy so hard last week about being in the park with Nick. As much as Sam might deny it, that had to make him jealous.

Now that Sam's made this revelation, the question becomes: What will he do about it? I also loved how Ollie pointed out that this situation is unfair to Marlo, that the person who's your second choice deep down always knows it.

Finally, there was Chris and Dov's trek through the woods. Yes, Dov's complaints were a bit tiresome but that's Dov. I honestly barely noticed until Chris blew up. I loved their fight because of how honest they were with one another.

Chris: So I should be selfish like you.
Dov: Not selfish just not spineless. It's OK to do things that make you happy. | permalink

Dov's right. Chris has a tendency to want to do the right thing to the point of making himself miserable.

And although it's nice to have Chris back, I did wonder if that meant he'd left Denise and Christian for good. Ditching Denise was certainly warranted, but Chris is the only Dad poor Christian knows. Despite what the DNA might say, walking away from the child isn't the right thing to do.

Now that everyone at 15 Division has figured out where they are, do you think they can get where they need to be?

Andy, please, Nick, really? Holy Molly he's not, he's not real life! Come on, open your eyes and listen to your heart.

Oooo, I sooo hate Andy with Nick, gross!! They seem so fake together, I honestly don't feel their chemistry at all.. it's hard to watch.

I really hope it won't last because she has to get back with Sam as soon as possible :) I don't understand how could someone prefer Nick over Sam :/ Just compare two relationships and you will see how much deeper and complex relationship with Sam is.. Nick is just a rebound and we all know it...

    McSwarek all the way :))

This was a good episode and liked how Traci solved the case and outsmarted Steve. I'm actually warming up to the idea of Traci and Steve dating; they have a fun spark, even during their competitive moments. Oliver getting Sam to admit his feelings was also great, but I can't help rooting for Andy and Nick, who really do seem to be perfect for each other. Their interactions as friends and then as a couple have been so natural and effortless that it's odd to picture them with anyone else. Sadly, I suspect that Andy will return to Sam after he declares his feelings for her, leaving Nick (and Marla) both heartbroken. I felt a sorry for Gail, but I never found her relationship with Nick very convincing, so she needs to move on. Gail just seems to have more chemistry with Dov, Luke and now Holly.
Chloe's innocent happy-but-quirky-nice-girl demeanor continues to seem fake and annoying to me, but perhaps that's the actress' fault. I'm pretty sure that she Chloe to do harm when she told Gail about Nick having feelings for Andy.

I liked the eps. Excellent performances from Chloe, Traci and Steve Peck. Comic dialogue between Dov and Chris in the woods. Sam and Oliver insurmountable! Finally Sam said what we were all waiting. Explicitly recognized that loves Andy! OMG! and Andy .... Andy was lost. Is lost, confused acting against his character. Nick returns to Afghanistan, please.!!

I found the case very interesting this week and I was so glad when they nailed Chuck.
Fast-forwarded through the Andy & Gail scenarios until the very end - for once Gail was right - Andy broke the friend code. Although Gail caused a self-fulfilling prophecy by pushing Nick away, that doesn't mean she's going to accept or like Andy being with Nick. It has to be quite difficult to watch them together - they are cute.
Don't feel sorry for Sam. I do recall that Andy reached out to him and he wasn't having it. Why does he want her now because he can't stand to see her with Nick?
And lastly, I like the idea of Traci & Steve - she would be a good challenge for him.

I don´t see why Andy should be to blame for anything. Nick pursued her because he is in love with her and they are such a lovely couple together. He brings the best out in her, including her playfulness; he is kind, open, honest and very attractive. Gail slept with someone else and that´s her cross to carry. I am very happy that Andy is staying with Nick. I hope that this storyline continues.

Standing Ovation for both Matt Gordon and Charlotte Sullivan in this episode!! They both killed every scene! So many funny lines and great moments in this episode, it would be impossible to list them all. All of the little bro-fights and real talk were fantastic. Traci was great holding her own against Steve. Love that she found her ways to outmaneuver him. Chloe being able to step up in a big way was adorable. I was cheering Gail on through the whole episode. Andy doesn't need to be in the doghouse forever, but Gail deserved to be able to get some satisfaction in her own Gail way, and when she finally broke into some tears, it killed me. Oliver getting Sam to spill so much in terms of his real feelings...no words!

I loved how Gail completely messes with Andy’s mind the entire episode. That was just so classic Gail. Of course she figured it out and tortured Andy the entire time. Andy broke the code and no matter why Nick ended it with Gail, Andy is the bad guy in this. That is not a role Andy can do well. I do like the fact that she when she kissed Nick she decided he was worth it.

Oliver getting Sam to finally admit that Andy is the person he is in love with and sees his future with was amazing. I do feel badly for Marlo and Oliver is absolutely right Sam needs to tell her sooner rather than later. No matter what that won’t end well.

I also like the fact that Dov and Chris left was the “rookies”, but weren’t the “rookies” when they got back. I agree with what Dov said that Chris needs to do something to make himself happy rather than giving up his happiness to do what others want. He stayed with Denise because of Christian even though he said they had nothing in common since they were 18. Now he came back, because after the revelation that is what people expected.

I like Steve. I think he treated Tracy the same way he would have treated anyone not in his unit. I like the fact that he did not show her any favoritism. So when she solved the case it was that much sweeter. I don’t think I would have respected him as much if he had treated Tracy differently than he would treat any other detective.

All together it was a great episode with good character development. The last few episodes should be very interesting.

OLIVER WILL FOREVER BE MY HERO ON THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!
He is the biggest McSwarek shipper and will stop at nothing to get them together! The scene with Sam was amazingly perfect! We all knew that Sam felt this way with his looks and actions but Oliver finally made Sam realize what he really wants and that he needs to go after it!!!!!!!
I am slightly afraid that Sam will find out about Marlo next episode as she is going off the deep end and will feel guilted in to staying with her a little longer. This will give the stupid romance of Andy and nick to grow more which is unacceptable!
Great episode and can't wait to see where these last episodes go!

    This was another fantastic episode!
Of course Andy would have a hard time telling Gail, she does not want to hurt Gail. I too felt what Gail said to her was harsh but Gail was hurt.
I was a little shocked that after that Andy would still want to date Nick but like she said when she kissed him, she wanted to make sure he was worth it and he is.
Oliver is so great! I loved that whole conversation with Sam.
I loved when Chris said to Dov "Top or bottom? and Dov told him to never ask him that again.
I also loved that Oliver and Sam treated Dov and Chris like 'Rookie" at the cabin but Dov and Chris were the ones to save the day and when Dov asked them where their beers were, that was great.
I too was a little annoyed with Steve, but he seems to act one way on the job and another when the case is done. That reminds me a little of Jerry.
I liked that Chloe saved the day, I like her a little more each week.
