Castle Review: Will She Marry Him?

at . Comments

After what felt like the longest hiatus in history, Castle Season 6 kicked off with “"Valkyrie," an intense episode that didn't waste any time in producing the answer fans have been waiting an entire summer for.

Let's dig right in, shall we?

Castle Premiere Photo

Castle Season 5, of course, concluded with Kate having the opportunity to head to D.C. for a dream job, while Castle placed his heart directly on his sleeve and proposed on that romantic swing set. So... what happened?

Following some hilarious back-and-forth about whether or not Castle is somehow breaking up with her, Beckett said YES! In case you are still processing it: Richard Castle and Kate Beckett are engaged! He put a rock on it! For real! Okay, back to the episode...

After six weeks of not seeing each other, Beckett is relocated to D.C. and Castle is returning from a book tour, popping in to surprise his gorgeous fiancée. Of course, he's unable to keep his head out of her case and, after getting her in trouble and getting abducted by a criminal, he returns home.

But little did Castle know he was coming home with a toxin that killed the man Beckett and company were on the hunt for. That's always awkward. Awkward and quite dangerous, that is.

In true Castle fashion, the twists and turns left us with a big “To Be Continued," as Castle supposedly has less than a day to live. What will happen to our favorite detective? We know he can't die. But will he get sick? Will this cause a problem for him and Beckett?

Sound off the comments with your theories and consider the following Castle Season 6 premiere notes:

  • Great to see the boys back in action! You have to love scenes with Ryan, Espo, and Castle.
  • How about Alexis’ boyfriend? This isn’t going to work out too well for dear old Dad.
  • First episode in and already no Lanie? Not cool.
  • Looks like Kate is doing just as well at her new job. But something has to happen. We want her back in NYC ASAP.
  • Who likes Lisa Edelstein as Beckett’s new partner? If you ask me, I prefer Ryan and Espo, and most importantly, Castle, any day.

What predictions do you have for the season? Will Kate return to New York? Will she and Castle really get married? Will they break up because of the distance?

Hit up the comments section and let us know what you thought of “Valkyrie.” Was it what you expected for the first episode or was it a bit of a letdown?

Love the show!, my favorite, but unless the producers find a way for all characters to be more involved, I'll disappointed.

It's just hard to believe that a proposal - in those relationship circumstances - was enough to fix that mess when they proceeded to live in separate cities right after that. On a different note - thank you for civil and friendly discourse. That's so rare on these internets :)

Balaji - LOL! I don't think she's cold, and I even understand why she has to be in control of her emotions. It won't help anyone if she cracks and I get that. I don't have to like it LOL. In that moment, there was too much cop-Beckett and not enough omg-my-man-has-less-than-24-hrs Beckett. But that's just me. As for the rest - I think you're mistaken. Beckett and Castle weren't on and off for four years, but what they were was longing and dancing around each other for that time. They certainly weren't living together; Castle got a drawer on Valentine's day, and they spend lots of time at each other's places, but they still have their own homes. And after "Still", which was the first time Beckett even said she loved him, we had three episodes of Beckett angst where she wasn't sure if Castle wanted her, wanted a future, second guessing, almost kissing other dudes, lying about job interviews etc etc etc. It's just hard to believe that a proposal - in those relationship circumstances - was enough to fix that mess when they proceeded to live in separate cities right after that. On a different note - thank you for civil and friendly discourse. That's so rare on these internets :)

TrulyTiny7, Totally agree on portraying Castle as the bungler. I was actually thinking to myself, "If Castle screws this up..." But we shouldn't be in that position in the first place. Sure, Castle is aloof, but he's not a total idiot, for lack of a better word. I think they made it work, but they did push it to the limits. Never again, writers! Also agree on Beckett being the boss in the Precinct. That's why it is gonna be interesting how they handle this change. If they just bring her back to the precinct, that's same old, same old, and I don't think it is going to be very interesting. The characters are fully developed, they're engaged, so if it's just the precinct with old plot threads (Bracken, 3XK etc.), that's not gonna make for a very exciting show. So that's gonna be the storyline that makes this season early on? How do they write all characters back into the show when Beckett's following her dream job?

As much as I dislike posting negative comments, I feel compelled to express my true feelings. First the positive. I love that Beckett said yes and despite Castle's missteps, she appears so loyal to him and indeed, in love with him. Who wouldn't be? That's it. The negative outweighs the positive. Here we go again portraying Castle as a bungler! Not cool. And I agree with most comments, Alexis boyfriend really needs to go. I was offended by this moocher and really stunned that Alexis, the level-headed, often more sensible offspring of Richard Castle, would bring him into her father's home without so much as a subtle request. I don't like McCord and the rest of the DC bunch. I miss Ryan, Espo and Lainie. I like that Beckett is "the boss" in the 12th. And...Castle cannot die! This is quite ridiculous that he has one day to live. Just ridiculous! As many times as I have suspended belief in enthusiastically following "Castle"; this one is difficult! I love "Castle" but last night I went to bed disappointed! I am a loyal fan tho so, next week, I really hope it gets better!

joyeful, Beckett's a cold bitch, ain't she? Just kidding. She's gotta hold it together obviously. She's gotta be the one who keeps her sanity and figures out a way to solve this thing. I am not sure I agree with the "suspension of disbelief" part. They've been on and off for four years. They've been living together for another year. They know each other inside out. And the feelings which have been made public in the last year have always been there before. This was vividly portrayed in the 22nd episode last season "Still". So it's not much of a jump to imagine them making long-distance work, especially when they're fully grown adults. As someone else mentioned, not sure how much I dig Alexis' new boyfriend? Sure she wants to explore, but a fruitarian who doesn't like spelling doesn't seem her type. Not sure where the writers are going with this.

I didn't miss Lanie that much, but I am glad the boys are back. That indicates a few important things, that this is not going to be a season with a new cast of characters for Beckett in DC. That was obvious because Castle without Salt and Peppa would suck, but they're here to stay. That also means one of two things: Beckett gets a federal job in NY or she comes back to her old job. Latter doesn't make sense in terms of character progression since it's already been made clear that Kate wants this badly, and any reasoning provided to bringing her back to NY is not going to hold up to analysis. That's going to be the most interesting part about the next few episodes. How she gets back to NY? And I cannot imagine the marriage happening anytime soon. They may end the season with that is what I am guessing.

I thought it was a good start to the season. Things have changed, but they're making the most of it. How boring would it be if the characters never change! Still, I'm waiting for the shoe to drop--how will Beckett end up back at the 12th? Or at least in NY so she can call on the boys for backup and Castle can follow her around again. I'm thinking she'll be put in a position where she has to choose between Castle and the federal job.
Oh, and cool shiny technology! What was even better--they just kinda had it there with nobody pointing out how the feds get cool shiny technology.

I think I would have liked the episode more if I didn't remember all too vividly how it ended last year. Talk about mood whiplash. With all the doubting and hemming and hawing and lying last season - all of a sudden they're a happy couple living in different cities? Two months and all their problems disappeared in a long distance relationship?!? That being said - once we got past the beginning and I was able to suspend disbelief - I enjoyed it immensely. A happy Caskett is a fun Caskett to watch. I also quite liked the case (which I haven't in a while), and I thought Lisa Edelstein was great. I thought Castle trying to get himself involved in a federal classified case was a little bone-headed (even for Castle), but I liked that his one slip-up has cost him so much. I LOVED the cliffhanger, but how can a woman tell the man she loves - her fiance - that he's dying without even getting SLIGHTLY choked up?

Thisb episode was terrible other than the proposal. Get rid of lisa. Alexis go back to the dorm. Or get ur own apartment. The character pi has to go. Castle buy him a passport. If they continue to go back and forth to dc there will be trouble because Feds won't put up with him. Also no time for the boys if they r always switching back and forth. Letting her go to the Feds was a dumb. Idea. And I can see a breakup coming at seasons end if she doesn't go back to ny. But how many times can the dept take her back. She keeps quitting

Castle Season 6 Episode 1 Quotes

Oh my god! Oh my god! You're proposing!

Kate, I'm not proposing to you so you'll keep your job or because I'm afraid I'm going to lose you. I'm proposing because I can't imagine my life without you.
