Hawaii Five-0 Review: The Brothers McGarrett?

at . Comments

"Aloha ke kahi I ke kahi (We Need Each Other)" was so jam-packed with car chases, bomb-throwing terrorists, dire hostage situations and secret possible-but-also-totally-bananas family connections, there was barely a second to catch your breath.

Hawaii Five-0 Premiere Scene

All of which makes sense - there is A LOT going on as season 4 of Hawaii Five-0 begins, and this episode did its absolute best to touch on all of it.

Is Kono still on the run with Adam? (Yep.) Is Wo Fat in the middle of something mysterious, as usual? (Uh-huh.) Can Danny find time in the middle of high stakes hostage situation/ terrorist car chase to still get in the best Hawaii Five-0 quotes of the night? (Would it be H50 if he didn't?)

But action aside, what really stuck with me about this episode was the final minutes. Could Wo Fat really be related to McGarrett? I had to rewind and watch that scene and rewatch, just to make sure I hadn't misheard him (though not sure what I could have misheard him asking Bergman about...maybe to check and see if Wo Fat is an Other?).

The skittish, mysterious Mrs. McGarrett was one of the most intriguing parts of Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 to me; her secrets, and the way her relationship with Steve is effected by them, defy easy explanation or solution, and gave the season a nice, spiky story to have running in the background.

It had never occurred to me, however, that her secret could have been one this big...or this bizarre. For me, it was a great, invigorating mystery to start the season with, though one that I have to wonder about actually being resolved any time soon.

One situation that seems like it's going to be resolved a lot more quickly: Kono's life on the lam with Adam. We know they're going to get her back to the island soon, but will it be in triumph over the Yakuza, or because Adam won't be able to outrun them? Either way, the pacing of this plotline is brisk and engaging, and kept me on my toes.

Chi McBride's SWAT Captain Grover was another nice resurrection of a character from the original show's mythology, as well as a brief (but vocal!) reminder that, though Five-0 plays by their its rules, not everyone is impressed by it. McBride's Grover was part of a proud tradition of 5-0 guest appearances - brief, but impactful. I dug his swagger. The door's open for more appearances from McBride this season, which I certainly hope will come to pass.

This premiere left me with more questions than answers about the fourth season, but hey, that's what a good season premiere should do. I'm desperate to find out about this most unusual branch in the McGarrett family tree, but what are you most excited about for season 4? Kono's adventure abroad? More carguments?

I think its off to great start. Love Catherine, we can't have all action and no personal life. It's not going to happen, so get over it.
Loved seeing kick ass Kono, Adam is starting to look like a bit of a whimp. I hope they stop that. Love the new Camaro, guessed Danny would not be able to drive it. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Okay, two episodes,we only have two episodes of this new season now,but there is one thing that really annoys me. I love the S4 premiere, trust me I do,I give it 'the best premiere ever',and I thought the show would be improved to a new level. But after watching the second episode I'm not so sure now. Look,I understand the role of Catherine is now officially a part of the show, and I accept that respectfully. But I am so done with seeing her in the middle of the team in every single episode. Can we have a break? It's a cop show, not a soap, people. Can we have an episode, just one, which only focuses on the team solving a goddamn case? It’s not a fucking ‘Catherine Show',all rihgt?

A disappointing start to the season - lots of flash, no substance. A few things that really annoyed me:
1. Cath gets taken hostage - ok, I get that, but Steve seemed to show no emotion at all. Adam N. is far more expressive than Steve, and it's getting old.
2. Would SWAT really just give up the prisoners like that? This is SWAT!
3. Why oh why would you give the prisoners the guns? Makes zero sense.
4. Isn't there a tracker on all police cars? Chin did a piss-poor job following the Camero. And besides Miami Vice did the "blow up the car so we could get a new one" far better 20 years ago.
5. Cath was a hostage, yet she's given a gun like a cop when they go after the baddies? Really? Doubtful at best. She's not a cop!
6. For a navy intelligence officer, Cath dresses like a hooker. Especially episode 2. Come on - she can be hot and smart and dress halfway decent (i.e. look at Kono!). I miss Kono - she's great - and Chin's storylines seem to be lagging. We barely see Max, the show has too many regulars. It's nice to see Steve get a girlfriend, but I don't know if it's Alex's limits as an actor, or Michelle's, or the two of them, but it isn't believable in the least. Steve has more chemistry with a plant. Just because an actor/actress is a nice person, and they're attractive, doesn't make them right for the role. It's time to fish or cut bait. There's no heat between Steve & Cath, no romance, no attraction, nothing. Rather like Danny and the museum chick. Compare that to Chin and his late wife, Kono and Adam... or better yet, some of the steamier hookups on better-written shows like Scandal. I'm sad - if H50 doesn't improve their writing, the show's going to be gone by the end of the season.

The season 4 premiere was good, definitely action packed and picked up, essentially where the season ended. I maintain my opinion that Catherine is a super-lame character. There is zero chemistry between her and Steve and her look is not attractive. Surely there must be other actresses to play his love-interest in a much more compelling manner. The rest of the characters are great and despite some cheesy action scenes, I still love Hawaii 5-0.

Miracle is right. They were in China. That's a big country to hide in.
Also, they thought they had a plan to get away. Thats what criminals do, they go for the money, its what is needed to continue. I thought it was a great episode. Loved the action, its not reality, its TV.
Rocky road for Steve and Catherine ahead, but they do belong together. I don't think Wofat and Steve are half brothers. I'm thinking we get an answer of why Doris and Wofat let each other go, which continues the story. Hopefully not dragged on too long. Love this show anyway.

Kono and Adam aren't in Japan. They are in China. What a great season opener! The best since the pilot IMO. It had it all, action, bromance, romance, and humor. And some turns and twists noone really expected. I hope they're able to keep up with it. If anyone is interested: The season premiere earned a 1.5 demo (adjusted up to 1.6 in the final ratings) and 9,38 mio viewers (adjusted up to 9,46). Not that bad on a friday night.

Lanika u made a good point. If u are hiding from the Yakuza why going to the city where are teh Yakuzas come from and it is filled with Yakuza mob. A flaw there, they could have gone to Australia for what is worth or even in the same US.

If you're trying to hide out from the Yakuza, why would you go to Japan? I would think maybe Kansas would be better! Also, all that action just to locate their hiding place, pretty much over to top. If the MLA was just in it for the money, why sacrifice your life?

Loved the episode though it was way more violent than any other one. So happy that the ohana feeling has returned. It was a very long summer w/out Steve and the gang! I'm hoping for more appearances by Chi - Grover will def keep Steve on his toes!! I think the new night works well and I'm looking forward to an action-packed season and hopefully answers to lots of questions!! Keep up,the great work PL and team!! I'm a fan for life!!

I've watched H50 since the first episode in 2010 and the Season 4 premiere was the best episode since the pilot! I've been watching the reruns on TNT and Friday night's episode finally recaptured the "ohana" of this team in a way I haven't seen since they risked it all to rescue Steve in North Korea in Season 2. H50 is back and if Season 4 premiere is any indication, it's going to be a great year. I'm fine with Steve and Catherine as long as they throw in plenty of bromance (loved Danny's "I've got your back...always" line) and shirtless Steve (Alex works hard to maintain that six pack -- may as well let us enjoy it). Already hoping for a Season 5 and beyond!

Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Episode 1 Quotes

Danny Williams: I just handed Wo Fat over to the feds--they're prepping him, getting him ready to transfer to a super max in Colorado.
Steve McGarrett: Did he say who was behind the attack?
Danny Williams: No, he wasn't feeling very chatty.

Adam Noshimuri: Are you sure you understand what this means?
Kono Kalakaua: No. But it's what we're gonna do. It's what we have to do.
