Hawaii Five-0 Review: The Brothers McGarrett?

at . Comments

"Aloha ke kahi I ke kahi (We Need Each Other)" was so jam-packed with car chases, bomb-throwing terrorists, dire hostage situations and secret possible-but-also-totally-bananas family connections, there was barely a second to catch your breath.

Hawaii Five-0 Premiere Scene

All of which makes sense - there is A LOT going on as season 4 of Hawaii Five-0 begins, and this episode did its absolute best to touch on all of it.

Is Kono still on the run with Adam? (Yep.) Is Wo Fat in the middle of something mysterious, as usual? (Uh-huh.) Can Danny find time in the middle of high stakes hostage situation/ terrorist car chase to still get in the best Hawaii Five-0 quotes of the night? (Would it be H50 if he didn't?)

But action aside, what really stuck with me about this episode was the final minutes. Could Wo Fat really be related to McGarrett? I had to rewind and watch that scene and rewatch, just to make sure I hadn't misheard him (though not sure what I could have misheard him asking Bergman about...maybe to check and see if Wo Fat is an Other?).

The skittish, mysterious Mrs. McGarrett was one of the most intriguing parts of Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 to me; her secrets, and the way her relationship with Steve is effected by them, defy easy explanation or solution, and gave the season a nice, spiky story to have running in the background.

It had never occurred to me, however, that her secret could have been one this big...or this bizarre. For me, it was a great, invigorating mystery to start the season with, though one that I have to wonder about actually being resolved any time soon.

One situation that seems like it's going to be resolved a lot more quickly: Kono's life on the lam with Adam. We know they're going to get her back to the island soon, but will it be in triumph over the Yakuza, or because Adam won't be able to outrun them? Either way, the pacing of this plotline is brisk and engaging, and kept me on my toes.

Chi McBride's SWAT Captain Grover was another nice resurrection of a character from the original show's mythology, as well as a brief (but vocal!) reminder that, though Five-0 plays by their its rules, not everyone is impressed by it. McBride's Grover was part of a proud tradition of 5-0 guest appearances - brief, but impactful. I dug his swagger. The door's open for more appearances from McBride this season, which I certainly hope will come to pass.

This premiere left me with more questions than answers about the fourth season, but hey, that's what a good season premiere should do. I'm desperate to find out about this most unusual branch in the McGarrett family tree, but what are you most excited about for season 4? Kono's adventure abroad? More carguments?

Episode was over the top but good to have H50 back. H50 won the time slot and CBS easily won the night in total viewers. H50: 9.38 million, Shark Tank:6.75
Dateline NBC: 6.53, Sleepy Hollow (Fox-Repeat) 2.77, America's Next Top Model(CW) 0.99. Shark Tank, however, won the night in the 18-49 age group.

Love Catherine. She was never meant to take Kono's place. Michelle Borth is a great regular addition. Can't wait to see more of Kono's storyline mid season. Love Grace Park. Really good season 4 start. I too don't think that Steve and Wofat are brothers. They are teasing us, because so many fans mentioned it last year.
Poor Danny, I feel for him, he rarely got to drive his own car. Look forward to seeing if Steve gets to drive the new one.

I already thought Steve's mom could be Wo Fat could be Steve's brother when the mom did not kill Wo Fat in the start of season 3. I mean a guy is chasing you down and wants to kill you. But you let him walk, and then you go behind your son's back and visit the man that had your husband shot? something was strange. I would actually be surprised if I was right because this whole time I thought he probably might be related to Steve.

Since when Catherine is part of a police squad? When they were chasing the baddies near the airport, everyone was firing guns even Catherine. I know that soon she will be off the military but cant she do that? ALso I heard tht this season Catherine and Steve will startto fall in love like really fall in love. But what about her former bf? I thought he was going to have a role in this new season.

I thought the episode was ok. Lots of excitement and AOL looks amazing but a little over the top for me. As others have said, I think Catherine will probably fill Kono’s lead female role for awhile and I’m not a fan of the character, so I hope she doesn’t become too primary. I've been watching the syndicated episodes on TNT and I'm remembering how great the first season was. I like those episodes much more than the current ones so while I may not always tune in on Friday nights for the new stuff, at least I can still get my fill of McDanno!

I also liked this premiere episode. It was much better than the season 3 premiere ep. Peter said Grace will be back but until midseason, so that could mean the reason why Chin story wil be expanded, they will have more time to develop that. Losts of action and drama and funny moments. I still do not like Catherine but with Grace absence Im sure Michelle character will show up more this season but still Steve and Catherine wont have a rose relationship Ive heard I guess it has something to do with Catherine former bf. I hope Billy is back.

LOVED THIS EPISODE! So GREAT to have 5-0 back and the ratings were solid !! (YES!!) The core four actors are all so AMAZING in their roles! I will have to say there is NO WAY Steve and Wo-Fat are brothers. Peter Lenkov has said it will not be the 'obvious' This speculation was all over the place last season and I think Peter is just having fun with it, toying with us ---- I am sure they will give us a very good explanation as to the Wo-Fat/Doris connection.......all in good time. I am enjoying the ride ----- GREAT JOB 5-0 !!

I see some things haven't changed over the summer! Still not enough characters for us more long-winded commenters! Grace has her reasons for wanting time off, and apparently for not wanting the world to know what they are! Looking forward to more Chi McBride and a new season of action (and a new Camaro - loved the Chevy commercial after the Silver Bullet's demise)!

This was a fun, fun, fun premiere! The opening scenes flowed so perfectly from the S3 finale right into the S4 premiere, as if there had not been a 4 month hiatus between the episodes! Was the scene in the Max security lock up a little video game-ish? Yes, and I loved it! Such an action-packed premiere, but not so easy to follow the first time through, I will admit. My 2 cents on the brotherhood of McGarrett & WoFat? It's too easy. The McGarrett family story line is complicated and convoluted, and making them brothers is way too simplistic an outcome. Doris is an extremely complex character, can't wait to find out her connection with WoFat, but she's not his mother. Kono will be back! Not so sure about Adam! PLenkov says we will see Kono back with the team but not until mid season. I would also like to see -either a written or video interview- where Grace Park says she no longer wants to be on H5-0. Pretty sure one does not exist. She has her reasons for wanting time off, and apparently for not wanting the world to know what they are! Looking forward to more Chi McBride and a new season of action (and a new Camaro -loved the Chevy commercial after the Silver Bullet's demise)!

Mrs O'Loughlin, yes it was really Alex tweeting but just this once. They announced it on Twitter yesterday. He tweeted under the CBS account @HawaiiFive0CBS. Definitely go read his tweets, he was wonderful! All made during the hour of the East Coast feed. Peter and DDk also tweeted during this hour so read them too. Someone asked Alex if he would tweet again and he basically said no. This was a special occasion.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Episode 1 Quotes

Danny Williams: I just handed Wo Fat over to the feds--they're prepping him, getting him ready to transfer to a super max in Colorado.
Steve McGarrett: Did he say who was behind the attack?
Danny Williams: No, he wasn't feeling very chatty.

Adam Noshimuri: Are you sure you understand what this means?
Kono Kalakaua: No. But it's what we're gonna do. It's what we have to do.
